Warmoon Lord - Battlespells (Werewolf Records 2021)

Minęły dwa lata i mamy drugi album od fińskiego Warmoon Lord i już nie pod skrzydłami Wolfspell Records, a Werewolf. Nowa płyta przyniosła nieco inne oblicze zespołu, niż miało to miejsce na "Burning Banners of Funereal War". Debiut był stosunkowo surowy, było tu mniej klawiszy, a sama muzyka odnosiła się do wielu klasyków skandynawskiego black metalu. "Battlespells" jest albumem dojrzalszym, bogatszym kompozycyjnie, o lepszym brzmieniu, a za razem nieco zawężającym inspiracje. W wielu miejscach Lord Vrajitor bardzo zbliżył się tą płytą do tego, co Emperor zrobili na "In the Nightside Eclipse" i jest to spory komplement. Do tego dodane zostały wpływy starego Graveland, ale tego z czasów przede wszystkim "Immortal Pride", może też "Following the Voice of Blood". Oczywiście nie mówię tu o pogańskiej estetyce, a o pewnym patosie i klawiszowych intrach, tłach. Utwór "The Key of the Moonpiercer" perfekcyjnie to obrazuje. Znajdzie się tu też trochę wspólnych mianowników z Dimmu Borgir czasów "For All Tid". Także to wszystko mówi za siebie. Jest widoczny progress, moim zdaniem płyta przeskakuje debiut, jest równie dobra, jak nie lepsza i w pełni udowadnia na co stać Warmoon Lord i że zespół zmierza w dobrym kierunku, będąc jedną z ostoi prawdziwego black metalowego grania. Przyznam się, że "Battlespells" była jedną z chyba najbardziej wyczekiwanych przeze mnie płyt z black metalem w tym roku i te oczekiwania nie zostały zawiedzione ani trochę. Płyta trwa niespełna 39 minut, ale jest to 39 minut najlepszej jakości, atmosfery i zrozumienia tematu jak tylko jest to możliwe- ja tak uważam.

Jest tylko jeden minus w kwestii strice wydawniczej. Nie od dziś wiadomo, że płyty wydawane przez Werewolf Records to jedne z najlepiej wydawanych, o doborze zespołów nie muszę już mówić. Szkoda tylko, że poza Finlandią i Hells Headbangers te płyty tak ciężko dostać zaraz po premierze. W distrach w Polsce pojawiają się grubo po czasie lub nawet wcale. Szkoda, że kontakt z wydawnictwem i ceny też stanu rzeczy nie polepszają. Także jeżeli komuś zależy, tak jak zależało mi, będzie musiał płyty szukać za granicą i zapłacić za nią z wysyłką coś w granicach 100 PLN.

Two years have passed and we have a second album from the Finnish Warmoon Lord and not under the banner of Wolfspell Records, but Werewolf. The new album brought a slightly different face of the band than on "Burning Banners of Funereal War". The debut was relatively raw, there were fewer keyboards, and the music itself referred to many Scandinavian black metal classics. "Battlespells" is a more mature album, richer in terms of composition, with better sound, and at the same time slightly narrowing its inspirations. In many places, Lord Vrajitor came very close to what Emperor did on "In the Nightside Eclipse" with this album, and that is quite a compliment. Added to this were the influences from the old Graveland, but the one from the times of mainly "Immortal Pride", maybe also "Following the Voice of Blood". Of course, I am not talking about pagan aesthetics, but about some pathos and keyboard passages. The song "The Key of the Moonpiercer" shows it perfectly. There will also be some common things with Dimmu Borgir from "For All Tid" era as well. So it all speaks for itself. There is visible progress, in my opinion the album tops the debut, it is as good as not better and it fully proves what Warmoon Lord can do. The band is heading in the right direction, being one of the mainstays of true black metal art. I must admit that "Battlespells" was one of the most anticipated black metal albums by me this year and these expectations have not been disappointed at all. The album lasts less than 39 minutes, but it is 39 minutes of the best quality, atmosphere and understanding of the subject as possible - that's what I think.

There is only one disadvantage when it comes to the issue subject. It has been known for a long time that the albums released by Werewolf Records are among the best, I don't have to talk about the selection of bands of course. It is a pity that, apart from Finland and Hells Headbangers, these stuff is so hard to get right after the premiere. In distros in Poland, they appear long after the release or even not at all. It is a pity that the contact with the label and their prices do not improve the situation either. Also, if someone cares, as I do, he will have to search for a CD abroad and pay for it with shipping something around 100 PLN.

Faustian Pact - Outojen Tornien Varjoissa (Werewolf Records 2020)

Wreszcie siadam do recenzji znakomitego... Nie! Genialnego debiutu finów z Faustian Pact! Tak, jest to jedna z najlepszych płyt, jakie się w tym roku pojawiły i jakich dane mi było posłuchać. I to nie tylko w ramach Black Metalu. Faustian Pact nagrał płytę, która jest sumą wszystkiego, co najlepsze w dziedzinie muzyki metalowej stawiającej na klimat, atmosferę, nawiązania do średniowiecznej estetyki, okultyzmu i wykorzystującej klawisze do budowania tej formuły. Jeżeli bliskie Wam są pierwsze dwie płyty Dimmu Borgir, "Moon in the Scorpio" Limobonic Art, "A Touch of Medieval Darkness" Desaster, wczesne materiały Siebenburgen, Nokturnal Mortum, norweski Odium, Vargrav czy późniejsze płyty Satanic Warmaster, to nie możecie przejść obojętnie obok "Outojen Tornien Varjoissa". Po prostu nie możecie, to byłaby zbrodnia! Jest tu cała masa porywających riffów, dających się zapamiętać melodii, klimatycznych wampirycznych wokali, delikatnych elementów folkowych, no i szczątkowego zastosowania żeńskich głosów. Generalnie nie lubię ich używania w ramach Black Metalu, gubią gdzieś jego surowość i diabelski charakter, spłycają, niepotrzebnie łagodzą. Tutaj nastąpił wyjątek i przyznam, że zadziałały na korzyść i to bardzo. Wykorzystane jako chóry w refrenach zrobiły kawał dobrej roboty na rzecz klimatu. Sprawdźcie sobie utwór "Valottomien Askelten Takana" i przyznacie mi rację. Ależ tu jest potencjał!

Płyta brzmi solidnie, jest w niej odrobina surowości, przede wszystkim w brzmieniu gitar i wokalu, co staje w balansie do czysto i dynamicznie brzmiącej perkusji i klawiszy. Nadaje to "Outojen Tornien Varjoissa" pewnej unikatowości i tworzy dwa współgrające ze sobą oblicza muzyki Faustian Pact. Z jednej strony mamy tradycyjny Black Metal: surowy, złowieszczy, a z drugiej jego melodyjne i pełne wyjątkowej atmosfery oblicze. 

Jak dla mnie powstał album praktycznie perfekcyjny i już nie mogę się doczekać kolejnego ich materiału. Kiedyś ta płyta to będzie kult, zobaczycie! Polecam każdemu!

Finally, I sit down to review the excellent... No! Brilliant debut of the Finns from Faustian Pact! Yes, it is one of the best albums released this year and that I have had the chance to listen to. And not only within Black Metal. Faustian Pact has recorded an album that is the sum of all the best in the field of Metal music, focusing on the climate, atmosphere, references to medieval aesthetics, occultism and using the keys to build this formula. If you like the first two albums of Dimmu Borgir, "Moon in the Scorpio" by Limobonic Art, "A Touch of Medieval Darkness" by Desaster, early materials by Siebenburgen, Norwegian Odium, Norkturnal Mortum, Vargrav or later Satanic Warmaster albums, you cannot pass by "Outojen" Tornien Varjoissa" emotionless. You just can't, it would be a crime! There is a whole lot of thrilling riffs, memorable melodies, atmospheric vampiric vocals, delicate folk elements, and limited use of female singing. Generally, I do not like using them as part of Black Metal, the female vocals, they lose its rawness and devilish character somewhere, they make it shallow and soften it unnecessarily . There was an exception here and I must admit that they worked a lot to the advantage. Used as choirs in the chorus, they did a great job for the climate. Check out the song "Valottomien Askelten Takana" and admit I'm right. There is potential here!

The album sounds solid, there is a bit of rawness in it, especially in the sound of guitars and vocals, which is balanced with clean and dynamic sounding drums and keyboards. This gives "Outojen Tornien Varjoiss" a certain uniqueness and creates two harmonious faces of Faustian Pact's music. On the one hand, we have traditional Black Metal: raw, ominous, and on the other, its melodic face full of unique atmosphere.

As for me, the album is almost perfect and I can't wait for their next material. One day this album will be a cult, you will see! I recommend it to everyone!

Werwolf (The True) - Devil Crisis (Werewolf Records 2020)

Tak jak z polskiej sceny zauroczyły mnie ostatnio nowe materiały Czorta i Nurtu Ognia, tak z zagranicznych wydawnictw pochłonął mnie totalnie m.in. najnowszy krążek od Werwolf (The True Werwolf). Generalnie przemawia do mnie wszystko, co tworzy Pan Lauri Penttila, ale ten album jest totalnie wyjątkowy i stawiam go zaraz obok takich jego dzieł jak "Fimbulwinter" oraz "Strength & Honour" Satanic Warmaster. To, co stworzył tu wraz z Grondem za perkusją to czysty majstersztyk. Poza odwołaniami do klasyki Black Metalu (np. wczesny Immortal, Hades czy Horna), z której Werwolf czerpie garściami, pojawiają się też drobne odniesienia do Heavy Metalu w stylu Accept oraz melodyjnego, lekko symfonicznego grania, jakie zaprezentowało niegdyś Dimmu Borgir na płycie "For All Tid" czy też "Stormblast". Takie utwory jak "0373", "Magic Fire" oraz "Chi No Namida" aż nadto dają temu dowód. Oczywiście razem z tym charakterystycznym, jakby średniowiecznym klimatem. Warto też wspomnieć, że kawałek "Chi No Namida" jest black metalową przeróbką kompozycji autorstwa Kenichiego Matsubary pt. "Bloody Tears", który pojawił się w grze "Castlevania II: Simon's Quest" z 1987 r. Nie spodziewałbym się adaptacji czegoś, co pojawiło się w grze wideo, byłem zaskoczony, ale efekt jest naprawdę świetny. Wracając do samej płyty. Dla mnie osobiście jest istnym rogiem obfitości, jeżeli chodzi o to, co w Black Metalu cenię i lubię najbardziej, zarówno w kwestii brzmienia, jak i samych kompozycji. Jest ta odrobina surowości, melodii i momentów, które da się autentycznie zapamiętać. No i ten duch dawnych czasów. Wszystko to tutaj jest. Ten album z pewnością trafi na szczyt mojej listy najlepszych krążków tego roku. To już absolutnie pewne. To, jak te wszystkiej wpływy są tu ze sobą połączone i wykorzystane, to po prostu dowód kunsztu w temacie, pasji i zdolności, świadomości w ramach tworzonej muzyki. Lepiej chyba nie można! Sztos!

Just as from the Polish scene recently I have been fascinated by new materials by Czort and Nurt Ognia, from foreign stuff I was totally absorbed by the newest album from Werwolf (The True Werwolf). Generally speaking, everything that Mr. Lauri Penttila creates appeals to me, but this album is totally unique and I put it right next to such of his works as "Fimbulwinter" and "Strength & Honor" under the Satanic Warmaster banner. What he created here with Grond behind the drums is a pure masterpiece. In addition to references to the Black Metal classics (e.g. early Immortal, Hades or Horna), from which Werwolf draws a lot, there are also minor references to Heavy Metal in the style of Accept and melodic, slightly symphonic playing, which Dimmu Borgir once presented on the album "For All Tid "or" Stormblast ". Songs like "0373", "Magic Fire" and "Chi No Namida" simply prove it. Of course, along with these comes characteristic, medieval-like atmosphere. It is also worth mentioning that the song "Chi No Namida" is a black metal rework of the composition by Kenichi Matsubara entitled "Bloody Tears", which appeared in the game "Castlevania II: Simon's Quest" from 1987. I would not expect adapting something that appeared in a video game, I was surprised, but the effect is really great. Coming back to the record itself. For me personally, it is a real cornucopia when it comes to what I value and like most in Black Metal, both in terms of sound and composition. There is a bit of rawness, melodies and moments that can be authentically remembered. And the spirit of the old times. Everything is here. This album will definitely hit the top of my list of the best ones of this year. It's absolutely certain. How all these influences are combined and used here is simply proof of craftsmanship in the subject, passion and ability, awareness within the music being created. It can't be better! Cream of the crop!

I Myrkri - Drivende i Dødens Æter (Wolfspell Records 2020)

Tak oto doczekaliśmy się drugiego albumu amerykańsko-duńskiego black metalowego sojuszu I Myrkri. Dwójka bije na głowę debiut i przynosi nam zimny, pełen atmosfery Black Metal, którego najsilniejszą stroną są riffy i właśnie klimat, jaki tworzy. Przypomina mi to niektóre działa Darkthrone, Taake, Xasthur czy wczesnego Kampfar. Przez skutą lodem i surową taflę kompozycji przebija nawet odrobina melodii, które współgrają z "leśnym" charakterem albumu. "Drivende i Dødens Æter" ma również pewne elementy, które można byłoby kojarzyć również z ambientem, zwłaszcza intro do płyty. Całość materiału jest utrzymana w podobnym, spójnym charakterze, nie ma tu zbytnich urozmaiceń, ale wszystko chodzi tu jak należy. Dodatkowe zabiegi byłyby tu zbędne. Słucha się tego dobrze i mimo że raczej nie spotka się tu diametralnego zaskoku, koła się tu nie odkrywa, to płyta się broni i zostaje na dłużej w pamięci. Muzycy I Myrkri mają wyczucie tego, co tworzą, a i potrafią nadać swojej muzyce odpowiedniego charakteru i świeżości, mimo że jest to bardzo mocno zakorzenione w znanych starociach. Z czystym sumieniem mogę ją polecić, na pewno jest to jedna z ciekawszych nowości początku roku jeżeli chodzi o Black Metal. Warto posłuchać i warto nabyć.

That's how we got to the second album of the American-Danish black metal alliance I Myrkri. Second one is absolutely far more better and brings us a cold Black Metal full of atmosphere, which strongest element are riffs and the climate it creates. It reminds me of some of the Darkthrone, Taake, Xasthur and early Kampfar works. Raw and ice-cold surface of the compositions can't hide a bit of melodies that harmonize with the "forestal" character of the album. "Drivende i Dødens Æter" also has some elements that could be associated with ambient, especially the intro to the album. The whole material is kept in a similar, coherent character, there is not much variety here, but everything is as it should be. Additional musical elements would be unnecessary here. This is enjoyable and even though there is hardly any surprise here, the wheel is not rediscovered, the record defends itself and stays in the memory for a significant time. Musicians of I Myrkri have a sense of what they create and can give their music the right character and freshness, even though it is very deeply rooted in known antiques. With a clear conscience I can recommend it, it is certainly one of the most interesting new releases of the beginning of the year when it comes to Black Metal. Worth listening and worth buying.

Morgal - Morgal EP (Werewolf Records 2018)

Morgal to młoda, fińska ekipa licząca sobie już cztery lata stażu na tamtejszej scenie. To trio w pewnych kręgach zdobywa sobie grono zwolenników równie szybko jak niegdyś niemiecki Cruel Force. I nie ma zdziwienia, chłopaki swoim energicznym i natchnionym wszelkim bluźnierstwem Black/ Thrash Metalem torują sobie drogę niczym walec. Mają już na swoim koncie kilka wydawnictw, jeden split z Exitius, acz wszystko w bardzo niskim nakładzie, max do 50-150 sztuk. Dopiero dogadanie się z Werwolfem i jego Werewolf Records dało im wydanie 4-utworowej Epki w konkretnym nakładzie i profesjonalnym wykonaniu wydawniczym, zarówno na winylu i CD. I tę kompaktową wersję pragnę wam tu przybliżyć. Mamy tu cztery kompozycje osadzone, jak można się spodziewać, w starej szkole Black Metalu, podrasowanej Thrashową motoryką  i mocną inspiracją Venom, Mercyful Fate oraz wczesnym Bathory, może i momentami Sodom z czasów "In the Sign of Evil". W ostatnim kawałku, "Warcry of the Vampire", słychać nawet elementy Tormentor z "Anno Domini", posłuchajcie sami, to zobaczycie do czego, a raczej do jakiego utworu tu nawiązuję. Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, jest to kawał świetnego grania w swojej estetyce i z całą pewnością wyróżniającego się z tłumu podobnych grup. Jest w tym ta pierwotna pasja i żądza grania jaką kiedyś miały wspomniane wyżej zespoły, to właśnie sprawia, że Morgal zasługuje na więcej niż chwilę uwagi.

Morgal is a young Finnish band that has already had four years of experience on the local scene. This trio in some circles gets a group of supporters as quickly as the German Cruel Force once. And there is no surprise, the guys are making their way like a roller with their energetic and inspired,  blasphemous Black / Thrash Metal. They already have a few releases issued, one split with Exitius, but all in a very low amount, up to 50-150 pieces. Only getting along with Werwolf and his Werewolf Records gave them the release of a 4-track EP in a proper edition and professional publishing on both vinyl and CD. And this compact version I want to present here. There are four compositions embedded here, as you might expect, in an old Black Metal school, beefed up with Thrash motility and strong inspiration from Venom, Mercyful Fate and early Bathory, sometimes Sodom from "In the Sign of Evil". In the last song, "Warcry of the Vampire", you can even hear the elements of Tormentor from "Anno Domini", listen to it yourselves, then you will see to what, or rather to what song here I refer. In general, it is a great piece of playing in its aesthetics and certainly standing out from the similar stuff. there is this primeval pasiion in this stuff and the desire to play that the aforementioned bands once had, that makes Morgal deserve more than a moment's attention.

Vargrav - Reign in Supreme Darkness (Werewolf Records 2019)

Debiut tej fińskiej ekipy, a raczej projektu (chociaż w tej chwili koncertują już w pełnym składzie m.in. z Werwolfem z Satanic Warmaster na wokalu i basie) postawił poprzeczkę bardzo wysoko i drugi album jawił się jako swoisty sprawdzian tego czy kolejna płyta podoła wyzwaniu. Dała radę, a nawet przerosła "Netherstorm". To niemal czysty geniusz w swojej lidze! Mimo tego, że jest to cały czas w obrębie tego samego stylu i estetyki - tu nie ma zmian (i całe szczęście), to jest intensywniej, mamy tu więcej ciekawych riffów, lepsze, potężniejsze brzmienie, no i symfoniczne pasaże w tle niemal rodem z "In the Nightside Eclipse" Emperor (ta płyta przypomina się w szczególności, czerpane są z niej ogromne inspiracje i to w bardzo umiejętny sposób), czy też "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk". "Reign in Supreme Darkness" to kolejny rozdział w rodzącej się historii Vargrav. Finlandia zyskała swoją własną odpowiedź na właśnie Emperor czy Limbonic Art. Album jest bardzo przestrzenny, miejscami epicki, wszystkie zawarte na nim dźwięki świetnie rozbrzmiewają i przenoszą nas do lat świetności Black Metalu i początków jego tzw. symfonicznej odsłony. Tej sztuce i temu dziedzictwu v-Khaoz oddaje hołd za pośrednictwem Vargrav. Robi to z pasją, wyczuciem i niemałym talentem twórczym, a wiadomo, w tego typu graniu, czyli z elementami symfoniki, łatwo coś zepsuć i stworzyć miałką, asłuchalną papkę bez klimatu i tego swoistego pierdolnięcia. O klasie Vargrav może świadczyć również to, że nie mówiąc komuś kiedy album był nagrany, to niemal jestem pewien, że zostałby ochrzczony albo jako niepublikowane kawałki Emperor, albo jakaś do tej pory nieodkryta grupa, która tworzyła w połowie lat 90-tych. "Reign in Supreme Darkness" to istna magia, esencja majestatycznej ciemności i w chwili obecnej jeden z najlepszych przykładów jak należy grać Black Metal. To materiał, który ma szansę zawładnąć każdym maniakiem tej sztuki, bez wyjątku, a i jestem pewien, że to kiedyś będzie klasyk! Na ten moment to dla mnie najlepsza płyta z tegorocznych nowości.

The debut of this Finnish band, or rather a project (although at the moment they are performing in full line-up with, among others, Werwolf from Satanic Warmaster on vocals and bass) set the bar very high and the second album appeared as a kind of test if it will cope with the challenge. It managed to do so, and even outgrew the "Netherstorm". It's almost pure genius in its genre! Despite the fact that it is all within the same style and aesthetics - there is no change (luckily), it is more intense, we have more interesting riffs, better, more powerful sound, and symphonic passages in the background almost like the ones from Emperor's "In the Nightside Eclipse" (this album is particularly reminiscent, the huge inspirations that are derived from it are used in a very skillful way), or "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk ". "Reign in Supreme Darkness" is another chapter in the emerging history of Vargrav. Finland has gained its own response to Emperor or Limbonic Art. The album is very intense, has some epic moments, all the stuff it contains sounds great and takes us to the glory years of Black Metal and the beginnings of its so-called symphonic type. Through the art of Vargrav, v-Khaoz pays homage to Black Metal heritage. He does it with passion, sensitivity and considerable creative talent, and as it is known, in this type of playing, that is, with elements of symphonies, it is easy to spoil something and create a pulp not suitable for listening, without climate and proper amount of energy. The Vargrav class can also be testified by the fact that without telling someone when the album was recorded, I am almost certain that it would be recognised as an unpublished compositions of Emperor, or some group from the 90's that has not yet been discovered. "Reign in Supreme Darkness" is a pure magic, the essence of majestic darkness and at the moment one of the best examples of how to play Black Metal. It's a material that has a chance to take over any maniac of this art, without exception, and I'm sure it will be a classic one day! At the moment, this is the best record from this year's news for me.

Satanic Warmaster- Fimbulwinter (Werewolf Records/ Hells Headbangers 2014)

Nie od dziś uważam, że Satanic Warmaster jest jedną z tych grup która od początku swojego istnienia konsekwentnie kultywuje w swej sztuce to co najlepsze w skandynawskim Black Metalu, a zwłaszcza te cechy i pierwiastki które zbudowały jego charakterystyczne brzmienie i klimat w latach 90-tych. Płytę "Fimbulwinter" można, obok znamienitych "Strength and Honour" czy " Carelian Satanist Madness", uznać za perłę w koronie tej grupy, jaki i jeden z lepszych (a może i najlepszych) przykładów wspomnianego stylu. Jest w tym sporo z Darkthrone, Dimmu Borgir z czasów ich dwóch pierwszych płyt (a także tej jedynej pod szyldem Fimbulwinter), wczesnego Gorgoroth, nie brakuje starej, dobrej Horny (nie ma tutaj zdziwienia), są i przemykające po kątach wpływy Burzum, odrobina folkowego/ akustycznego pierwiastku Ulver, czy nawet BM-u spoza mroźnej północy jak na przykład Nokturnal Mortum. Wieńczący płytę, instrumentalny "Silent Call of Moon's Temple" wydaje się również pozdrowieniem dla jednocześnie aż trzech hord: wspomnianego przed chwilą Nokturnal  Mortum (intro do płyty "Goat Horns"), Graveland (wstęp do "Carpathian Wolves), a i kolejnych weteranów norweskiej sceny- Immortal (motyw nieco podobny do tego z "Beyond the North Waves"). Jednym słowem na "Fimbulwinter" przeplatają się trzy charakterystyczne cechy: czyste przesiąknięte furią i chłodem łojenie, to wolniejsze, atmosferyczne, podparte odrobiną nostalgicznych melodii i klawiszowym tłem oraz śladowe, zaczerpnięte z folku elementy. Jak dla mnie mieszanka wręcz perfekcyjna. Płyta jakby zespalająca wszystkie odcienie muzyki Satanic Warmaster w jeden album. Już jej poprzednik "Nachzehrer" był temu bliski, ale na "Fimbulwinter" znacznie dopracowano aspekt brzmieniowy, co sprawiło, że powstał album jeszcze bardziej esencjonalny i wciągający. Dla mnie osobiście jedna z najbardziej udanych płyt w ramach Black Metalu jakie ukazały się w ostatnich latach. Naprawdę jest czego posłuchać, a i do takich albumów ma się ochotę wielokrotnie powracać (stąd też min. niniejsza recenzja), także ode mnie najwyższa nota. Polecam!

Vargrav- Netherstorm (Werewolf Records 2017)

Jestem pod sporym wrażeniem tego projektu. Już po przesłuchaniu próbek materiału Vargrav wiedziałem, że album jako całość będzie czymś absolutnie wyjątkowym. Na płytę przyszło mi trochę poczekać, ale gdy w końcu do mnie dotarła to czas ten został zrekompensowany z nawiązką. Swoim majestatycznym, epickim Black Metalem podpartym ścianami gitar, wampirycznymi wokalami i potężnymi, klawiszowymi pasażami (które są tu najważniejszą częścią składową kompozycji, one nadają całości tego niesamowitego wydźwięku) Vargrav niemal starł się z debiutami Emperor i Limbonic Art, czy też albumem "Stormblast" Dimmu Borgir. Tak właśnie, i nie uważam aby miała to być przesada. "Netherstorm" zasługuje na taką opinię i na konkretne docenienie, bo naprawdę jest w stanie konkurować z tymi klasycznymi dziełami pionierów tego typu grania, czyli tej, nazwijmy to, symfonicznej odsłony Black Metalu. V-KhaoZ, odpowiedzialny za całą warstwę muzyczną, i niemal całą tekstową, stworzył na tej płycie praktycznie tą samą niesamowitą atmosferę jaką miały ponad 20 lat temu "Moon in the Scorpio" czy "In the Nightside Eclipse". Z tym, że teraz brzmi to potężniej i jeszcze bardziej przestrzennie. Tylko ktoś kto totalnie czai te klimaty, jest z nimi w jakiś sposób zżyty, potrafi oddać ich sedno, odtworzyć ten klimat, brzmienie, a za razem nadać mu nowej jakości. V-KhaoZ pod szyldem Vargrav tego właśnie dokonał. "Netherstorm" kultywuje dziedzictwo wyżej wspomnianych płyt, przenosząc ich esencję i klimat w nowy wiek. Uważam, że każdy kto siedzi w Black Metalu powinien tej płyty posłuchać, zaniechanie w tej kwestii byłoby tu wręcz niewybaczalne.

Album wydany został prze fińską Werewolf Records jako digipak cd oraz w dwóch wersjach winylowych, do których jako bonus dodano 7'' z dwoma utworami, min. coverem Emperor "Ancient Queen". Jak już widać po samych grafikach towarzyszących chociażby niżej zaprezentowanej płytce cd, V-KhaoZ ma totalne wyczucie estetyki jaka powinna tego typu sztuce towarzyszyć. Dosłownie wszystko się tu zgadza!
