Bez kombinowania i w stylu lat początków naszej rodzimej sceny. Wracając do muzyki. Podsumowując, płyta nie powala w kwestii tekstów - generalnie nie moja bajka i styl (z wyjątkami), natomiast muzycznie totalnie go kupuję i dzięki temu, będę miał ochotę go słuchać.

English translation:

Thanks to this year's vinyl release, which I have just received, I decided to write down my reflections on the new Destroyers album. Last year it didn't work out, somehow I postponed it for an indefinite period of time, until there was an incentive to write something. Destroyers is one of the groups that built the Polish metal scene in the 1980s. Their work is either loved or hated, or you just have a certain fondness for it. Personally, I am not a fan of the lyrical layer that the band represents, at least half of the lyrics do not appeal to me at all, but musically it is a really solid piece of metal music. Without combining and in the style of the early years of our Polish scene. Thanks to this, I return to the works of Destroyers from time to time. That is why I can say that I'm part of this group that has some kind of sentiment towards them. "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła" is Destroyers' third full-length album and is a returning one after many years of absence. The first thing I can say about it is that it is the best album the band has recorded. Yes, it sounds good, there's energy, nice riffs. Marek's vocals are at their prime and his singing style that is so characteristic doesn't leave him. The subject matter of the lyrics and their aesthetics have not changed over the years, so somehow I do not really see the point in discussing this issue. If you know Destroyers' works well in this respect, then you know what to expect. Nevertheless, I really liked "Zemsta Roninów" (maybe simple to the core, but "Tnie katana! Głowy ścina!" is so memorable) and "Nine Circles of Evil". Back to the music. Injecting some fresh blood on the guitars did good to the band. The work of Dominik and Tomek built the quality of this material. In fact, it's mostly for their guitars that I listen to this album and want to come back to it. Thanks to them, it has the right edge, energy and feeling and thus stands out from the other two albums of the group. It is simpler, less combining here, there is a lot of that classic thrash/heavy metal in it. Respect must also go to Marek Łoza in this matter, because he is also responsible for some of the music on the album. To sum up, the album don't win in terms of lyrics - generally not my cup of tea and style (with exceptions), but musically I totally buy it and thanks to that, I want to listen to it. Here, "Nine Circles of Evil" absolutely wins and if someone does not like Marek's lyrics, but has the appropriate distance to the topic, he should listen to the album. A good portion of classic metal sounds.

Hostia - Carnivore Carnival (Deformeathing Productions 2020)

Album mus!

English translation:

It's been over a month since the last review and this silence should be broken. And it should be with something serious! Therefore, I want to finally share my reflections on the Hostia's second album - "Carnivore Carnival", released last year. The gentlemen recorded an album consistent with their debut, mature and solidifying their style. What you can hear right away is a great combination of selectivity and oldschool dirt. The balance between one and the other has been perfectly matched. The album sounds powerful, very dynamic; because of that, the perception of the combination of death metal, grindcore and hardcore/punk accretions unleashed to us is actually very good and addictive. Hostia has created a concise, powerful album that makes even better impression than their debut - it is an evident step forward without leaving the chosen form. When listening to this cannonade, I also have the impression that somewhere in these sounds sneaks the spirit of the once initiated (by Entombed) death 'n' roll. Such material not only devastates the speakers, but also works perfectly in concert conditions, at which the band aims in particular. In the lyrical layer, it continues with the atmosphere of slashers and strong criticism and exposing of the true face of the Christian religion. It is blasphemous and with a hint of black humor. We have less than 30 minutes of great stuff here and it is not too little. The grindcore form of not exceeding 2 minutes for each track works perfectly here. The compositions are constructed in such a way that the listener doesn't feel unsatisfied, the total running time is used to the maximum. There is space for all the necessary elements. I regret reaching for this album so late, but now I will be closely following the band's activities. A must-have album!

Slavland - Stal biała, krew czerwona (Eastside 2020)

Moje pierwsze zetknięcie z twórczością Slavland to jeszcze czasy szkolne. No i miłe zaskoczenie.

English translation:

My first contact with Slavland's work goes back to school days. The first album that I heard and that Belzagor recorded under this name was "Szepty Starych Dębów", then I reached for the earlier material "Gęstwiny Dróg Zapomienia". They were obviously strongly pagan/folk metal materials, but still containing a large dose of black metal. Belzagor's vocals had ominous, almost vampiric character. Percussion was probably computer-made, I don't remember for sure. Anyway, the albums were distinguished by austerity and their aesthetics were firmly rooted in the 90s. I don't remember listening to anything else from Slavland. Now, years later, I go back to the Eastside catalog again and come across a new album from this band. I can't say, I was curious how this music has changed over the years, and what new Belzagor has created. And a pleasant surprise. It's still a lot from the aesthetics I remember. Cool riffs, lots of ravishing folk elements that Slavland has always been famous for. The percussion does not click so much and it seems that it is a living instrument, not a computer, it has a much better sound and, importantly, we already have fully mature and developed vocals and transparent compositions here, there is no more dirt. Having no contact with Slavland's music since "Szepty Starych Dębów", the progress is amazing, you can see the difference and all the creative path that Belzagor has traveled over the years. The song "Na Tatary" could easily be included in the repertoire of the Russian Arkona, it is really a serious level of performance. Maybe it's not in the case of production, but the composition for sure. What is worth mentioning, while working on "Stal biała, krew czerwona", old Polish and Lithuanian texts and lyrics were used. For example, such "1672" comes from "Pieśni Ludu" once collected by Zygmunt Gloger. It is a slightly balladizing folk song that used to be sung probably in military forts, somewhere in the distant Podole. This album is a work that almost perfectly depicts the underground pagan folk metal and proves that Slavland is doing well, and that its work only gets better over the years. I can confidently recommend the album to everyone who knows and likes bands such as Biały Viteź, Nów, Venedae, Piorun or Temnozor.

Cancerfaust - Let the Earth Tremble (Godz ov War 2020)

Płytę rozpoczyna mocarny, rzężący bas i faktycznie ziemia zaczyna drżeć! Polski styl i charakter zmieszany z mroźną Szwecją i odległą Florydą. Płyta traktuje słuchacza niczym blender - tnie na pełnej, żeby zaraz zwolnić i silnymi ciosami przytłoczyć go do ziemi, zero wytchnienia.

English translation:

The album that I didn't have time to review last year. I thought that January would smash me with the latest Asphyx material, and here the first full Cancerfaust album came in the mail and seems to be fighting hard with the Germans for this privilege. Cancerfaust has already made an impression with the previous materials, but here I have a feeling that they went one step further and at the moment it is not known what to expect as it is so good. But to the point. The album starts with a powerful, rattling bass and the ground starts to tremble! After that, it only gets better. The band has placed their style and sound somewhere between Vader, Deicide, and Dismember, and it's an electrifying mix. And there is nothing to debate on, as the strength of this album is primarily the guitars. Polish style and character mixed with frosty Sweden and distant Florida. It is hard, brutal, but it will also serve some melody here and there. The album treats the listener like a blender - it cuts at full speed to immediately slow down and force you to the ground with strong blows, no respite. From the technical side it is also very good, the sound is massive and thanks to that, death metal perfomed by Cancerfaust has such an impact. What can I say, this band climbs the ranks of the underground and doesn't bother about anything. There is constant progress and at the moment "Let the Earth Tremble" is a testimony of musical maturity and developing one's own style, awareness of how it should look and where it is going. Let me put it briefly, Cancerfaust is currently one of the best death metal bands in the Polish underground. They are a young band, true, but they fully deserved it.

Horna - Kuoleman Kirjo (World Terror Comittee 2020)

English translation:

I have been waiting for the new Horna album - and more specifically, to buy a physical copy - since last spring. From what I remember, it was available for listening (or some songs from it) quite some time before the CD and LP release. Finally, at the beginning of December, CD appeared and in January, I was able to buy it in Poland. Before the album reached me, I had listened to something from it and read some reviews. What I have heard had made my expectations high. I was not disappointed! This is undoubtedly Horna's best material since Nazgul (Werwolf from Satanic Warmaster) was on vocals. The album is extensive (over an hour of listening with the leitmotif of death, divided into 14 parts or, if you prefer, compositions), very coherent, sounding great and at the same time referring to the roots of this band and the aesthetics of the first two albums, adding a lot of new atmosphere, character and production refinement to it. You can feel how much work has been put into this album. Horna has had its highs and lows - they either released a very good or average album, and here they reached their top by offering us one of the best materials that they have ever recorded. An interesting procedure was the use of clean vocals that appear from time to time. I emphasize that this has not been overdone. I don't know if this idea was performed for the first time. Surprisingly, it turned out really well and even those who are allergic to such "experiments" in black metal shouldn't complain here. It just fits (such "Tahtien Yona" turned out phenomenal!). Horna did not disappoint and the album will satisfy all fans of the group, as well as black metal enthusiasts in general. "Kuoleman Kirjo" will also be a great introduction to the band's work for those who haven't got to know the band yet. For me, it is a great release and I would love to include this album in my TOP 10 for 2020, but it was too late.

Azarath - Saint Desecration (Agonia Records 2020)

Wisienką na torcie jest zamykający album utwór "Beyond the Gates of Burning Ghats".

English translation:

I hereby choose my album of the year 2020! What Azarath did on this one is something amazing for me personally! Not only in terms of the devilish death metal they play, but also regarding the composition and sound, and the musical technique that emerges from this demonic music. This record simply smashes everything to the ground. "Saint Desecration" stands out not only as a reference to the band's older albums, but also is an amazing qualitative step forward. I have the impression that the gentlemen have never sounded so powerful before! And it does the group very well to have Skullripper on vocals. The years at Embrional have done their job and Marcin fit in perfectly here, both with his voice and guitar. Inferno, Bart and Peter, as always, are rocking and in their best shape, the band shows its best side. The multitude of different additions and inspired solos are hidden in crushing blasts, riffs cutting like polsilver and fierce vocals. Azarath showed on this album that you can still play brutally, and at the same time with artistry and finesse, smuggle some melody into this form, creating fist-punching death metal on the one hand, and on the other opening its depth and richness to the listener. The icing on the cake is the closing track "Beyond the Gates of Burning Ghats". The band has not had such a track in their output yet. Comprehensive, with an excellent line of guitars (and the solo here is beautiful), mystical in its overtone and very atmospheric, full of darkness, smoldering candles and incense. A bit of a behemoth-like in places, but still retaining that "claw" characteristic for the group. Azarath also made their first music video to this composition, which I am attaching above. The nature of the album is perfectly reflected in the gloomy and mysterious cover by Marta Promińska, Inferno's wife. A cover of Merciless "Pure Hate" was also added to the limited CD version, which I present in this review. The band played it as their own composition - top class!

Grimcult - Revelations of Sinister Flame (Putrid Cult 2020)

Posłuchacie, to będziecie wiedzieli, o czym mówię. Tymczasem zaproście Diabła do swojego życia i wrzucajcie "Revelations of Sinister Flame" do odtwarzaczy!

English translation:

The fact that Morgul has an ability to pick up good bands and projects has been known for a long time. Especially in the area of black metal. Here's another example of that. I must admit that this is another album that positively surprises me this year with its enormous sense of this genre and its roots. The person behind the presented Grimcult is R. Hate well-known from Odour of Death, who takes the nickname Nobody here. On the 25-minute "Revelations of Sinister Flame" he created black metal with a specific reference to the early achievements of our scene (under the sign of Veles, Graveland, old North), but also Finnish and bands like Horna and Satanic Warmaster. In a word, the cult of the past created with taste and awareness, and above all with the ability to recreate that atmosphere and aesthetics. Not everyone can do it and I think that something like this proves the artist's class and devotion to his favorite music. This is always the result of a huge passion in the subject. The material is very atmospheric, with keys, which when used well do a great job. Plus this cover art by Lord. K... Right on point! The icing on the cake is the song "Przymierze", sung in Polish, the text of which is immediately remembered, or at least the most important part of it is. Listen, you will know what I'm talking about. Hopefully R. Hate didn't make a one-shot here and will continue attacking with Grimcult. Meanwhile, invite the Devil into your life and throw "Revelations of Sinister Flame" into your CD players.

Vomit Division - Hell in a Bottle (Metal on Metal 2020)

Wszystko to wrzucone jest do jednego gara, zamieszane, podrasowane całkiem dobrą produkcją i gotowe, mamy "Hell in a Bottle".

English translation:

Vomit Division is about to celebrate two years of existence on the scene, and the debut album is my first encounter with this one-man band (Desmotes is responsible for all instruments and vocals). I can't say that Vomit Division stands out from other black/thrash bands. The only factor that is special here is great dynamics and a very good and refined sound. The music that Desmotes performs is stuff that may come out of Bathory's first album, Cruel Force's debut and Swedish Gehennah's records. All this is thrown into one pot, mixed up, boosted with quite good production and there we have "Hell in a Bottle". In addition, we have all blasphemy and perversion in terms of lyrics, and it also goes hand in hand with the title of the album. Hell and Satan must be there and here they are. The album, despite the musical aesthetics that I deal with often and generally like, neither surprised me nor attracted me in the long run, despite its initial potential. Well, but this is of course a subjective thing. In general, everything is okay and it is objectively very difficult to complain about anything here. All is correct, and even in many respects very good. However, I missed the so-called "this thing". You like it, but after the listening you don't want to come back to it anymore. This is how it looks like with me when it comes to "Hell in a Bottle". Unfortunately. Correct record in its niche. Material for those who have not yet been overwhelmed by the black/thrash formula. Devoted fans of this stuff will be content. I've heard a lot of different bands in this style and it's hard to surprise me here.

Okrutnik - Legion Antychrysta (Ossuary Records 2020)

No i winyl!

English translation:

Okrutnik is a band that is one of the biggest surprises recently, at least for me. Seemingly, the group performs oldschool metal rooted in the 80s and a hybrid of black/speed/heavy/thrash styles, and when the album starts up, we are struck by a new quality, fresh sound and a lot of inspiration from Polish Kat (above all), Turbo or the first album of Wolf Spider (former Wilczy Pająk). We have a lot of good riffs, ravishing compositions, and there will also be a place for a metal ballad - in the style of the bands mentioned above. And of course, the breake out of the English-language form, because the lyrics of the songs are in Polish. Okrutnik has filled a certain gap that has recently appeared in relation to this type of playing and aesthetics. As most bands follow the typical path of Venom, Bathory, Destruction or Celtic Frost, Okrutnik chose the best groups of the Polish scene of that time as his model. And praise them for that, because thanks to this, "Legion Antychrysta" is an original, thrilling material and, above all, brings a breath of freshness in its entire already solidified form. I bode a very good future for the band and I wish they would keep on going and gather ideas for the next material in this difficult time for touring. And vinyl! Yes, "Legion" undoubtedly deserves to be released on this format as well. Those who like the old Polish metal overfilled with still youthful verve, grab this album without hesitation!

Kommand - Savage Overkill (Metal on Metal 2020)

Kolejny zespół spod znaku skóry, alkoholu i ćwieków. Jeżeli taki granie Wam pasuje, to i Kommand też Wam podejdzie. Kufle w górę i naprzód!

English translation:

Another band from under the sign of leather, alcohol and studs. "Savage Overkill" by Kommand is an area already heavily exploited by the present Darkthrone or Gehennah, and heavily laden with Hellhammer and early Celtic Frost influences with the addition of Motorhead. There's even some punk dirt in it. And that's how it all goes. I think we all know this formula well. "Savage Overkill" shares the fate of many albums recorded in this aesthetic. First contact and in most cases you like it (I personally like it). It doesn't impress, it doesn't surprise you, but with its simplicity, organic sound (I have the impression that the album was recorded live at the studio or in the rehearsal room) it draws you in and it is pleasant to listen to and even to bang your head to it. It is worth noting that the gentlemen show the same austerity as the Japanese from Sabbat, you can hear some similarity here, and I have never heard this specific sound from anyone before. The downside is that this material doesn't stay in your head for long, you will listen to it once, twice, three times and then put it aside and move to other things - that's a cruel truth. The album is good, but it can't be denied. Kommand's music is directed primarily to those who like a certain form of playing, such blasphemous black/thrash rock 'n' roll, as presented by groups like Chapel or Rotten. If this kind of sound suits you, then Kommand will be a good pick. Tankards up and forward!

Shadow Warrior - Cyberblade (Ossuary Records 2020)

Pierwsza sprawa to nowe wpływy i ciekawiej brzmiące kompozycje. I fajnie! Rzeźbią świetne riffy, a gdzieś to wszytko ucieka.

English translation:

I must admit that I was waiting for the first Shadow Warrior full-length. I waited, because I was curious if the band would make some progress in relation to the EP, and would fix some gaps. It would be extremely desirable, because their music has a lot of potential, even though it is simple, classic heavy metal. Has it happened? Yes and no. The first thing are new influences and more interesting-sounding compositions. As before, they played heavily in the style of Tokyo Blade, early Def Leppard, etc., now the album is dominated by influences from the old Running Wild, Iron Maiden and the Japanese from Metalucifer. And that's great! The album is richer, there is more fun for listening to it and discovering all these noble inspirations. This is an advantage! Ania Kłos's vocal is also a plus, there is more power in it, it is more aggressive and ... it dominates the album. And its domination, in my opinion, did a little harm to the guitars, which are hidden in the back. They play great riffs but it all hides somewhere. I have such an impression. It just begs to be put forward. The album would gain power immediately, and that's how it is not much better in this matter than the EP. This is the only drawback of this material. Coming back to the points in favour, it is nice that there are a few hit-like songs that stay in your head; title one, "Demon's Sword" (the first so heavy track in the band's output) and "Iron Hawk Rising" - deserved a single. Once again, the band records almost perfect material. Maybe I'm a bit disappointed, but despite some shortcomings, I will be happy to come back to the album, because anyway it's really enjoyable, and I just like this band. I say "yes" to "Cyberblade" all in all.
