Demonztrator - Sinister Forces of Hatred (Ossuary Records 2021)

Nie jestem jakimś specjalnym fanem thrash metalu, nigdy nie przepadałem za tym stylem grania, poza kilkoma wyjątkami, do jakich należy stara Metallica, Slayer, Kat oraz Destruction. Nic innego nie jest w stanie mnie w tym graniu zachwycić, jest dla mnie bardzo wtórne, często pozbawione klimatu i pomysłów. Dlatego też postanowiłem zmierzyć się z jakimś obecnym thrashowym wydawnictwem, żeby zobaczyć co w trawie piszczy, może się przekonać lub dopisać coś do listy wyjątków. Padło na nowy materiał od fińskiego Demonztratora, który wydało Ossuary Records. "Sinister Forces of Hatred" to już drugi pełny krążek tej grupy, który oscyluje wokół klimatów bliskim późniejszemu Slayer, Exodus, Overkill, może miejscami i Testament czy nowszemu Destruction. Materiał brzmi bardzo profesjonalnie, mocno. Są tam chwytliwe riffy i nawet sporo melodii, wokale też niczego sobie (przypominają mi trochę Schmiera) - mocne, z pazurem. To bardzo poprawny thrashowy materiał, dynamiczny, z odpowiednim kopem. Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, i chcąc być totalnie obiektywnym, nie ma do czego się przyczepić. Jednakże będąc subiektywnym, to ta poprawność "Sinister Forces of Hatred" mnie wynudziła i miałem wrażenie, że niemal każdy numer jest na to samo kopyto - zmienia się tylko riff. Płyta wleciała jednym uchem, a wyleciała drugim. Nie wiem, może faktycznie tradycyjny thrash, to nie moja bajka i nie powinienem się do tego grania dotykać. Z całej płyty zapamiętałem tylko "Into the Mouth of Madness", bo tam się coś faktycznie działo. Było trochę heavy metalowych zagrywek, jakiś klimacik, przemknął akustyk, nawet gdzieś zahaczyło o death/thrash. Naprawdę fajny numer. Reszta niestety nie podeszła, nie dla mnie po prostu. Spróbowałem sobie ponownego podejścia do trashowego grania i już wiem, żeby raczej sobie odpuścić. Płyta do polecenia dla tylko dla thrashowych wyjadaczy.

I'm not a special thrash metal fan, I've never really liked this style of playing, with a few exceptions like old Metallica, Slayer, Kat and Destruction. Nothing else can delight me in this sound, it is very secondary to me, often devoid of climate and ideas. That's why I decided to challenge some current thrash release to see what's going on out there, maybe find out or add something to the list of exceptions. I have chosen the new material from the Finnish Demonztrator, released by Ossuary Records. "Sinister Forces of Hatred" is the second full-length album of this group, which oscillates around the atmosphere close to the later Slayer, Exodus, Overkill, and maybe Testament or the newer Destruction. The material sounds very professional, strong. There are catchy riffs and even a lot of melodies, the vocals are also remarkable (they remind me a bit of Schmier) - strong, with an edge. This is a very correct thrash material, dynamic, with the right punch. Overall, and wanting to be totally objective, there's nothing to complain about. However, being subjective, this correctness of "Sinister Forces of Hatred" bored me and I had the impression that almost every track is the same thing - only the riff changes. The record flew in with one ear and flew out with the other. I don't know, maybe thrash metal is actually not my cup of tea and I shouldn't touch it again. I only remembered "Into the Mouth of Madness" from the whole album, because there was really something happening there. There were some heavy metal elements, some kind of atmosphere, acoustic touch, even some death/thrash attempt. A really cool composition. The rest, unfortunately, didn't appeal to me that much, it's just not for me. I tried to re-approach thrash and I already know I should let it go. A CD to be recommended for thrash maniacs only.

Ironbound - The Lightbringer (Ossuary Records 2021)

Już pierwsze minuty słuchania i wiem co będzie działo się na tej płycie. Wchodzi utwór "The Witch Hunt" i wniosek jest tylko jeden - Iron Maiden. I ta teoria sprawdza się przez całą długość płyty. Tak, "The Lightbringer" przesiąknięty jest riffami i melodyką, także w solówkach, tak bardzo przynoszących na myśl dokonania Brytyjczyków. Nawet wokalista zdaje się czerpać sporo z techniki Bruce'a. Docieram do utworu "Smoke and Mirrors" i pozbywam się już wszelkiej resztki złudzeń. Numer ten tak bardzo przypomina "Dream of Mirrors" z "Brave New World". Dziwię się trochę, że jakoś mnie ten fakt nie razi. Zaraz odpowiadam sobie na to pytanie jednym prosty stwierdzeniem. To jest po prostu dobre, morda mi się cieszy jak tego słucham. Zdaję sobie sprawę, że te wpływy Maidenów, tak oczywiste pod każdym względem, mogą razić sporo osób, ale gdy zespół robi to tak dobrze, to czy warto się czepiać? Chyba nie. Eksplorując płytę doszukałem się jeszcze szczypty nawiązań do Deep Purple i Grave Digger. Gdzieś tam przenika ta rockowa podniosłość (w sumie Deep Purple było dla Steve'a i spółki bardzo ważnym zespołem) i pewien element niemieckiego stylu riffowania, niemniej jest tego sprawa marginalna. Całość spina jeszcze okładka płyty, która, jak się dobrze przyjrzeć, puszcza oko do "Somewhere in Time" i "Virtual XI". Cóż, jak już iść w Maidenów to z przytupem! Powiem tak, posłuchałem, sprawiło mi to radochę i ja to kupuję. Mamy polską odpowiedź na największy zespół heavy metalowy wszech czasów. Jeżeli Blazon Stone się udało (z Running Wild), to dlaczego nie Ironbound? Życzę zespołowi sukcesu, bo wyczucie muzy Iron Maiden mają w małym paluszku.

Already the first minutes of listening and I know what will happen on this album. The song "The Witch Hunt" enters and the conclusion is only one - Iron Maiden. And this theory holds true throughout the length of the whole album. Yes, "The Lightbringer" in case of riffs and melodies, also in the solos, reminds so much of the achievements of the British band. Even the singer seems to draw a lot from Bruce's technique. I get to the song "Smoke and Mirrors" and get rid of all remaining illusions. This track is so much like "Dream of Mirrors" from "Brave New World". I'm a little surprised that somehow this fact doesn't offend me. I am answering this question with one simple statement. This is just good, I enjoy listening to it. I realize that these Maiden influences, so obvious in all respects, can create mixed feelings among a lot of people, but when the band does it so well, is it worth picking on? Probably not. While exploring the album, I found a pinch of references to Deep Purple and Grave Digger. Here and there is this rock solemnity (in fact Deep Purple was a very important band for Steve and the company) and a certain element of German riffing style, but it is a marginal matter. The album cover bounds everything together. When you look closely, it may refer to "Somewhere in Time" and "Virtual XI". Well, when you go into Maiden stuff, let's do it properly! I will say yes to it. I listened to it, it was fun. We have a Polish answer to the greatest heavy metal band of all time. If the Blazon Stone was successful (with Running Wild), why not Ironbound? I wish the band success, because they have a feeling for Iron Maiden's music flowing in their veins.

Okrutnik - Legion Antychrysta (Ossuary Records 2020)

Okrutnik to zespół, który jest jedną z większych niespodzianek ostatniego czasu, przynajmniej dla mnie. Pozornie grupa wykonuje oldschoolowy metal przesiąknięty latami 80. i hybrydą stylów black/speed/heavy/thrash, a gdy już odpali się płytę, wita nas nowa jakość, świeże brzmienie i bardzo dużo inspiracji naszym Katem (przede wszystkim), Turbo czy pierwszym albumem Wilczego Pająka. Mamy tu bardzo dużo dobrych riffów, porywających numerów, a i na metalową balladę znajdzie się miejsce - na wzór wymienionych wyżej zespołów. No i oczywiście wyłamanie się z anglojęzycznej formy, bo teksty numerów są po polsku. Okrutnik załatał pewną lukę, jaka się ostatnio wytworzyła względem tego typu grania i estetyki. Tak jak większość zespołów idzie utartym szlakiem Venom, Bathory, Destruction czy Celtic Frost, tak Okrutnik wybrał sobie za wzór najlepsze załogi polskiej sceny tamtych czasów. I chwała im za to, bo dzięki temu "Legion Antychrysta" jest materiałem oryginalnym, porywającym i przede wszystkim wnoszącym pewien powiew świeżości w tej całej okrzepłej już formie. Wróżę zespołowi bardzo dobrą przyszłość i życzę sobie, aby szli za ciosem i w tym trudnym dla koncertowania czasie zbierali już pomysły na kolejny materiał. No i winyl! Tak, "Legion" niewątpliwie zasługuje na to, żeby wydać go również na tym nośniku. Komu stary polski metal podsypany jeszcze młodzieńczą werwą miły, niech sięga po tę płytę w ciemno!

Okrutnik is a band that is one of the biggest surprises recently, at least for me. Seemingly, the group performs oldschool metal rooted in the 80s and a hybrid of black/speed/heavy/thrash styles, and when the album starts up, we are struck by a new quality, fresh sound and a lot of inspiration from Polish Kat (above all), Turbo or the first album of Wolf Spider (former Wilczy Pająk). We have a lot of good riffs, ravishing compositions, and there will also be a place for a metal ballad - in the style of the bands mentioned above. And of course, the breake out of the English-language form, because the lyrics of the songs are in Polish. Okrutnik has filled a certain gap that has recently appeared in relation to this type of playing and aesthetics. As most bands follow the typical path of Venom, Bathory, Destruction or Celtic Frost, Okrutnik chose the best groups of the Polish scene of that time as his model. And praise them for that, because thanks to this, "Legion Antychrysta" is an original, thrilling material and, above all, brings a breath of freshness in its entire already solidified form. I bode a very good future for the band and I wish they would keep on going and gather ideas for the next material in this difficult time for touring. And vinyl! Yes, "Legion" undoubtedly deserves to be released on this format as well. Those who like the old Polish metal overfilled with still youthful verve, grab this album without hesitation!

Shadow Warrior - Cyberblade (Ossuary Records 2020)

Przyznam się, że czekałem na pierwszy długograj Shadow Warrior. Czekałem, bo byłem ciekaw czy zespół poczyni progress w stosunku do EPki, załata pewne braki. Byłoby to niezwykle pożądane, gdyż drzemie w ich muzyce spory potencjał, mimo że to prosty, klasyczny heavy metal. Czy tak się stało? I tak i nie. Pierwsza sprawa to nowe wpływy i ciekawiej brzmiące kompozycje. Tak jak wcześniej dominowało w ich utworach granie mocno w stylu Tokyo Blade, wczesnego Def Leppard itp., tak teraz płytę zodominowały wpływy starego Running Wild, Iron Maiden i japończyków z Metalucifer. I fajnie! Płyta jest bogatsza, jest więcej radochy z jej słuchania i odkrywania tych wszystkich szlachetnych naleciałości. To na plus! Na plus jest również wokal Ani Kłos, jest w nim więcej mocy, jest bardziej zadziorny i... dominuje na płycie. No i ta jego dominacja moim zdaniem trochę zaszkodziła gitarom, które są jakby schowane z tyłu. Rzeźbią świetne riffy, a gdzieś to wszytko ucieka. Ja odnoszę takie wrażenie. Aż się prosi, żeby wysunąć je naprzód. Płyta od razu nabrała by powera, a tak jest w tym względzie niewiele lepiej niż na EPce. To jest jedyny minus tego materiału. Wracając do plusów, to cieszy fakt, że jest tu parę hiciarskich numerów, które zostają w głowie; tytułowy, "Demon's Sword" (pierwszy tak mocarny kawałek w dorobku zespołu) oraz "Iron Hawk Rising" - zasługiwał na singla. Po raz kolejny zespół nagrywa prawie idealny materiał. Może jestem tak odrobinkę zawiedziony, ale mimo pewnych niedociągnięć bardzo chętnie będę do płyty wracał, bo tak czy siak to świetne granie, a i po prostu lubię ten zespół. Ostatecznie jestem na tak.

I must admit that I was waiting for the first Shadow Warrior full-length. I waited, because I was curious if the band would make some progress in relation to the EP, and would fix some gaps. It would be extremely desirable, because their music has a lot of potential, even though it is simple, classic heavy metal. Has it happened? Yes and no. The first thing are new influences and more interesting-sounding compositions. As before, they played heavily in the style of Tokyo Blade, early Def Leppard, etc., now the album is dominated by influences from the old Running Wild, Iron Maiden and the Japanese from Metalucifer. And that's great! The album is richer, there is more fun for listening to it and discovering all these noble inspirations. This is an advantage! Ania Kłos's vocal is also a plus, there is more power in it, it is more aggressive and ... it dominates the album. And its domination, in my opinion, did a little harm to the guitars, which are hidden in the back. They play great riffs but it all hides somewhere. I have such an impression. It just begs to be put forward. The album would gain power immediately, and that's how it is not much better in this matter than the EP. This is the only drawback of this material. Coming back to the points in favour, it is nice that there are a few hit-like songs that stay in your head; title one, "Demon's Sword" (the first so heavy track in the band's output) and "Iron Hawk Rising" - deserved a single. Once again, the band records almost perfect material. Maybe I'm a bit disappointed, but despite some shortcomings, I will be happy to come back to the album, because anyway it's really enjoyable, and I just like this band. I say "yes" to "Cyberblade" all in all.
