Slaughtbbath - Alchemical Warfare (Hells Headbangers 2019 / Old Temple 2020)

Za sprawą Old Temple doczekaliśmy się w tym roku polskiego wydania ubiegłorocznej płyty Slaughtbbath "Alchemical Warfare". Zespół jest już w podziemiu dobrze znany i wysoce szanowany. U siebie są w czołówce sceny. Nie ma co się dziwić, ich oldschoolowy death/black metal to granie z najwyższej półki. Jeżeli ktoś czytający nie słyszał o nich do tej pory, to jeżeli lubi klimaty bliskie Destroyer 666 lub Azarath, to nie mógł lepiej trafić. "Alchemical Warfare" to drugi pełny album tej chilijskiej ekipy i kolejny krok naprzód w bluźnierczej i bezkompromisowej metalowej sztuce. Debiut był świetny, ale dwójka to już najwyższa liga w temacie. Slaughtbbath podążają konsekwentnie obraną przez siebie drogą, serwując nam dziewięć brutalnych kompozycji składających się na ponad półgodzinny materiał. Przy takiej nawałnicy, a jednocześnie jakości nagrania, to w zupełności wystarcza. Dodatkowo zespół urozmaica swoje kompozycje drobnymi organowymi, czy też akustycznymi elementami. Nie brakuje też porywających solówek. Rozbudowany finałowy "Ascension to the Dragon's Throne" zdaje się tylko potwierdzać kunszt grupy, ich umiejętności techniczne i udowadniać, że czyste ekstremum nie jest tu jedynym celem. Już teraz mam ochotę wracać do tego materiału, a pierwsze z nim zetknięcie zaowocowało trzema odsłuchami z rzędu. Niesamowita płyta, którą polecam każdemu!

Thanks to Old Temple, this year we have the Polish release of the last year's Slaughtbbath "Alchemical Warfare" album. The band is already well known and highly respected in the underground. In Chile, they are at the forefront of the scene. No surprise, their old school death/black metal is top shelf music. If someone reading this has not heard about them so far, then if he likes stuff close to Destroyer 666 or Azarath, he could not find anything better. "Alchemical Warfare" is the second full-length album of this Chilean band and another step forward in blasphemous and uncompromising metal art. The debut was great, but number two is already a cream of the crop. Slaughtbbath are consistently following their chosen path, serving us nine brutal compositions in over half an hour of material. With such a storm and at the same time the quality of the recording, it is more than enough. Additionally, the band diversifies their compositions with small organ or acoustic elements. There are also ravishing solos. The extensive final "Ascension to the Dragon's Throne" seems to only confirm the artistry of the group, their technical skills and prove that pure extreme is not the only goal here. I already want to come back to this material, and the first contact with it resulted in three listeniengs in a row. Amazing album that I recommend to everyone!

Frightful - Astral Freeze (Self-released 2019)

"Astral Freeze" to pierwszy materiał demo gdańskiego Frightful, ale nie pierwszy, jaki wydali, bo zespół ma już na koncie dwie EPki i split z Cannibe. Niemniej były to stricte death metalowe materiały. Teraz zespół jakby skręca w inne, bardziej black/death metalowe rejony z silnym naciskiem na oldschoolowe granie. Na "Astral Freeze" dostajemy trzy utwory, w tym cover Dissection "Son of the Mourning" (wyszło to naprawdę dobrze). Wybór tego numeru aż nadto świadczy o tym, w jakim kierunku zmierza grupa. To właśnie okolice starego Dissection z czasów ich dem, Sacramentum czy Necrophobic, tylko jakby w bardziej agresywnym wydaniu. Warsztat jest okej, podobnie brzmienie (biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że to demo), nie ma się tu do czego przyczepić. Panowie nie są specjalnie oryginalni, ale fajnie pracują na swoich inspiracjach, dając solidne i poprawne granie w temacie, czują klimat i to najważniejsze. Naprawdę dobrze mi się tego słuchało i widzę potencjał. Szczerze jestem ciekaw pełnego albumu.

Niestety, niczego pozytywnego nie mogę powiedzieć na temat formy wydania tego dema na CD. Mamy już takie czasy i możliwości, że naprawdę nietrudno jest samemu wydać niski nakład płyty i nie będzie to poligrafia zrobiona metodą lichego ksero i CD-R z nadrukiem, którego matrycą były gryzmoły cienkopisem. Odpowiednie wydanie płyty własnym sumptem to nie są przesadne koszty. Spotkałem się z wieloma przypadkami, gdzie efekt był naprawdę satysfakcjonujący. Na szczęście ten krótki materiał poratowało wydawniczo Sign of Evil Productions, wydając go porządnie na profesjonalnej kasecie. Wszystkim zainteresowanym to właśnie wydanie polecam!

"Astral Freeze" is the first demo material of Frightful from Gdańsk (Poland), but not the first they have released, because the band has already recorded two EPs and a split with Cannibe. Nevertheless, those were strictly death metal materials. Now the band seems to turn into other, more black/death metal regions with a strong emphasis on oldschool playing. On "Astral Freeze" we get three songs, including the cover of Dissection "Son of the Mourning" (played really well to be honest). Choosing this composition is more than enough to show in which direction the group is heading. It is around the old Dissection from the time of their demos, Sacramentum or Necrophobic, only in a more aggressive way. The technical side is okay, just like the sound (remember that this is a demo), there is nothing to complain about. The band is not much original, but they work nicely on their inspirations, giving solid stuff on the subject, they feel the atmosphere and this is the most important thing. I really enjoyed listening to this and I see the potential. I'm honestly curious about the full album.

Unfortunately, I can't say anything positive about the format of the issue of this demo on CD. We already have such times and possibilities that it is quite easy to release a limited release of the disc by yourself and it will not be polygraphy made with the use of a shabby photocopier and a CD-R with some scrawl printed on. A proper self-released record is not that expensive as it may seem. I've come across many situations when it worked and the effect was really cool. Fortunately, this short material was released by Sign of Evil Productions properly on a professional cassette. I recommend this edition to everyone interested!

Impure Declaration - Mind Upheaval, Unclear Signs (Old Temple 2019)

Gdzieś na dalekim, górskim odludziu jest opuszczony kościół. Zewsząd okala go las. Budynek od wieków stoi pusty i popada w ruinę. Już dawno nie ma nic wspólnego z niegdysiejszą "świętością". Ale czy istotnie jest pusty, czy żyją w nim tylko wiatr i natura? Podobno tak. Jednak gdy zapada noc, budowlę okala złowrogi cień. Ludzie z okolicy mawiają, że lęgnie się tam zło, nienazwana groźba. Gdy nadchodzi pełnia, podobno dzieją się tam przerażające rzeczy. Ciemność jest wtedy nieprzenikniona, przytłaczająca, a górski wiatr niesie ze sobą krzyki. Czy ludzi, czy bestii - nikt nie potrafi powiedzieć. Był kiedyś śmiałek, który się tam zapuścił, ale już nigdy potem go nie widziano. Światło dnia odsłoniło wtedy ślady krwi i znaki jakiegoś przerażającego rytuału. Miejsce odcięto od ludzkich oczu, zamknięto, zabito deskami, wejście zawalono. Nastała zmowa milczenia. Nikt nigdy nie potrafił wyjaśnić tego, co się tam działo, nikt nie chciał więcej wspominać przeklętego kościoła. Czas zrodził zapomnienie, acz groza pozostała... Na zawsze.

Tak, "Mind Upheaval, Unclear Signs" mógłby być ścieżką dźwiękową do podobnej historii. Wraz ze swoją duszną, złowrogą atmosferą, smolistym brzmieniem i niepokojącymi kompozycjami snuje historię grozy, a jego atmosfera jest wyjątkowa. Jeżeli szukacie Death/Doom Metalu, który przyprawi was o dreszcze, którego dźwięki nacechowane są iście diabelską aurą, to nie mogliście lepiej trafić!

When the fullmoon comes, scary things are said to happen there. The darkness is then impenetrable, overwhelming, and the mountain wind carries screams. Whether it's people or beasts - no one can say. There was once a daredevil who went there, but he has never been seen again. The light of day exposed bloodstains and signs of some terrifying ritual. The place was cut off from human eyes, closed, boarded up, the entrance collapsed. There was a conspiracy of silence. No one could ever explain what was going on there, no one wanted to remember the cursed church again. Time has created oblivion, but the terror remained... Forever.

Yes, "Mind Upheaval, Unclear Signs" could be a soundtrack for a similar story. Along with its stuffy, sinister atmosphere, tarry sound and disturbing compositions, it tells a horror story, and its atmosphere is unique. If you are looking for Death/Doom Metal that will give you a shiver, which sounds have a devilish aura, you couldn't have found a better one!

Pathogen - Obscure Deathworship (Old Temple 2019)

Przyznam się, że Pathogen poznaję wraz z tą płytą. Nigdy wcześniej o nich nie słyszałem, mimo faktu, że siedzą w katalogu Old Temple już od 2012 roku, czyli od ich trzeciej płyty "Forged in the Crucible of Death". I żałuję, że nie usłyszałem ich wcześniej. To, co dzieje się na "Obscure Deathworship" to czyste złoto. Nie spodziewałem się, że jakaś podziemna ekipa z Filipin wysmaży taki kapitalny kawał Death Metalu (a może bardziej Death/Thrashu, bo i wpływów tego drugiego nie da się momentami nie zauważyć). Takiego, który będzie pięknym ukłonem w stosunku do szlachetnych i kultowych już materiałów, a jednocześnie dobrze - jak na podziemne możliwości - wyprodukowanym. "Obscure Deathworship" przynosi skojarzenia z demami wielkiego Nihilst czy naszego rodzimego Vader, tylko w pozbawionej tej demówkowej chropowatości formie. Brzmienie jest mocne i soczyste, przez co słucha się tego wyśmienicie. Te wszystkie mocarne, a jednocześnie chwytliwe riffy, jakie znajdują się na tym krążku, mają szansę wybrzmieć i pokazać się słuchaczowi w pełnej krasie. A jest tu czego słuchać i z czego wybierać. Płyta wciąga w swą czeluść już z pierwszym odsłuchem i już nie wypuszcza. Gdybym poznał ten krążek w ubiegłym roku, to z pewnością bym go wyróżnił, bo jakoś nic z ubiegłorocznych nowości w temacie nie zostało ze mną na dłużej (no może poza Morbid Stench), a "Obscure Deathworship" z pewnością byłby tu wyjątkiem. Musicie tej płytki posłuchać! Potężny oldschoolowy Death Metal pełną gębą!

I admit that I'm getting to know Pathogen with this album. I have never heard of them before, despite the fact that they have been in the Old Temple catalog since 2012, that is from their third album "Forged in the Crucible of Death". And I wish I had heard them before. What happens at "Obscure Deathworship" is pure gold. I didn't expect that some underground band from the Philippines will create such a great piece of Death Metal (or maybe more Death/Thrash, because the influence of the latter can't be missed). One that will be a beautiful nod to the already noble and iconic materials, and at the same time well produced for underground possibilities. "Obscure Deathworship" brings associations with the demos of the great Nihilst or our Polish Vader, only in the form without this demo-like roughness. The sound is strong and thick, which makes the listen really enjoyable. All the mighty and at the same time catchy riffs that are on this album have a chance to resound and show themselves to the listener in all their greatness. And there is something to listen to and choose from. The album draws you into its abyss with the first listening and does not let you out. If I got to know this album last year, I would definitely write about it, because somehow nothing from last year's novelties in the subject stayed with me for a long time (well, except Morbid Stench), and "Obscure Deathworship" would certainly be an exception here. You must listen to this album! Powerful, oldschool Death Metal!

Armagh - Cold Wrath of Mother Earth (First Wave Only 2019)

Tak oto dostajemy pierwszy długograj od naszego rodzimego Armagh. Po stosunkowo obiecującej EPce Panowie powrócili ze zdwojoną siłą i można śmiało powiedzieć, że w chwili obecnej są jedną z czołowych polskich ekip parających się hołdem dla tzw. pierwszej fali Black Metalu. W muzyce Armagh znajdzecie nie tylko naleciałości Venom, Bathory czy Mercyful Fate, ale również (i może przede wszystkim) Running Wild z czasów "Gates to Purgatory" i "Branded and Exiled", Kata i ich "666" oraz pierwszych dwóch albumów Living Death - a zatem zespołów z łatką Heavy/Speed w tej bardziej mrocznej odsłonie. I nie ma co czarować, w tym graniu nie ma nowości ani specjalnego zróżnicowania, to stary, dobry, organiczny metal, który jedzie według tradycyjnego nań przepisu. Po prostu czysty oldschool. "Cold Wrath of Mother Earth" to przede wszystkim porywające kompozycje i zapadające w pamięć riffy, które po chwili zaczyna się nucić pod nosem. Tutaj leży siła tej płyty, w energii, prostocie i gitarowym łojeniu. Tylko tyle i aż tyle. Mi płytka weszła bez popity (nawet o siódmej nad ranem!) i udowodniła, że Panowie znają się na swojej robocie, mają pasję do grania i że na ten zespół trzeba zwrócić uwagę, a na kolejne płyty czekać warto. Dla wszystkich fanów wspomnianych wyżej klimatów - to dla Was mus! Tyle w temacie!

After a relatively promising EP, the gentlemen returned double-barrelled and it can be safely said that at present they are one of the leading Polish bands paying tribute to the so-called first wave of Black Metal. In the music of Armagh you will find not only the influences of Venom, Bathory or Mercyful Fate, but also (and maybe above all) Running Wild from the times of "Gates to Purgatory" and "Branded and Exiled", Kat and their "666" and the first two albums of Living Death - so bands with the Heavy/Speed ​​patch but in its darker version. And there is no need of a further talk, there is no novelty or special diversity in this playing, it is an old, good, organic metal that goes according to a traditional recipe for it. Simply pure oldschool. "Cold Wrath of Mother Earth" is based on catchy compositions and memorable riffs, which after a while you begin to croon. Here lies the strength of this album, in energy, simplicity and guitar stuff. No more, no less. The album caught my attention instantly (even at 7 o'clock in the morning!) and proved that the gentlemen know their work, have a passion for playing and that this band needs attention and it is worth waiting for next albums. For all fans of the above-mentioned stuff - this is a must for you! That's all!

Vosbud - Almannagja (Wolfspell Records 2019)

Po raz pierwszy piszę tutaj o materiale pochodzącym z Islandii. Vosbud to jednoosobowy black metalowy projekt mierzący w jego przestrzenne, majestatyczne rejony, wciąż mieszając to z odrobiną surowości i chaosu. Album "Almannagja" można postrzegać jako chęć przekazania patosu i nietypowego krajobrazu Islandii, natury tej wyspy, gdzie łączy się wulkaniczna groza z pięknem krajobrazu poprzez właśnie Black Metal. Może nie ma tu specjalnie zapadających w pamięć motywów, riffy i kompozycje bliższe są przeciętności w temacie niż czemuś wyraźnie się wyróżniającemu, ale jak na debiut jest to dobry, solidny album z predyspozycjami na coś znacznie lepszego. Z pewnością takim jasnym punktem jest jego atmosfera i wykorzystanie do tego najlepszych środków w ramach black metalowej sztuki (chociażby odrobina melodyjnego podejścia podana w formie ścian gitar); połączenie wspomnianych już na początku cech z mrokiem i chaosem tego gatunku. W tych dźwiękach walczą ze sobą światło i ciemność, dzień i noc, natura w swym łagodnym obliczu, jak i w tym władczym i destrukcyjnym. Warto też wspomnieć spójność płyty i stylistyczną konsekwencję. To czyni ją zapowiedzią czegoś wyjątkowego, początek jest obiecujący i liczę, że Vosbud dalej będzie kontynuował swą islandzką sagę, racząc nas kolejną dawką swej muzyki w jeszcze ciekawszej odsłonie. Na razie jest dobrze i z czystym sumieniem zachęcam do zapoznania się z albumem "Almannagja". Większość z Was powinien on zaciekawić.

I am writing about the material from Iceland for the first time here. Vosbud is a one-man black metal project aimed at its spatial, majestic areas, still mixing it with a bit of rawness and chaos. The album "Almannagja" can be seen as a desire to convey the pathos and the unusual landscape of Iceland, the nature of this island, where volcanic horror connects with the beauty of the landscape through Black Metal. Maybe there are no especially memorable themes, riffs and compositions are closer to mediocrity in the subject rather than something distinctive, but for the debut it is a good, solid album with predispositions for something much better. Certainly such a bright spot is its atmosphere and the use of the best means in the context of black metal art (even a bit of melodic approach given in the form of guitar walls); the combination of the features mentioned at the beginning with the darkness and chaos of the genre. In these sounds there is a struggle between light and darkness, day and night, there is nature in its gentle form, as well as in its imperious and destructive one. It is also worth to mention the album's consequence and stylistic consistency. This makes it an announcement of something special, the beginning is promising and I hope that Vosbud will continue its Icelandic saga with a new dose of its music in an even more interesting way. For now, it's good and with a clear conscience I encourage you to check the album "Almannagja". Most of you should get interested.

Warmoon Lord - Burning Banners of the Funereal War (Wolfspell Records 2019)

Kolejny fenomenalny wręcz projekt, jaki wykluł się niedawno na fińskiej ziemi. Przed chwilą mieliśmy Vargrav, hołdujący lekko symfonizującym zespołom lat 90. pokroju Limbonic Art i Emperor, a teraz pojawił się Warmoon Lord. Za tym zespołem stoi Vechi Vrajitor (Juuso Peltola), którego co niektórzy mogą już znać z dark ambientowego projektu Old Sorcery. Tutaj również mamy powrót do lat świetności sceny. Płyta przepełniona jest nawiązaniami do klasyki fińskiego Black Metalu (Satanic Warmaster, Warloghe, Horna, Thy Serpent), bardzo mocno słychać tu również zespoły wchodzące niegdyś w skład Les Legions Noires (Vlad Tepes, Mutiilation, Belketre). Zauważyć się też da lekką inspirację "Goat Horns" Nokturnal Mortum (bardzo wyraźnie słychać te klawiszowe wpływy, zwłaszcza w utworze "Obsessing Darkness"), miejscami "Pentagram" Gorgoroth czy "Stormblast" Dimmu Borgir. Jest tego trochę, jednym słowem. Przemyślane i kapitalnie zagrane, wzorcowo przywołuje to tamte czasy, wspomniane zespoły oraz płyty. "Burning Banners of the Funereal War" zakonserwował w swoim brzmieniu, estetyce, strukturze utworów wszystko to, za co wspomniane klasyki są wielbione i słuchane po dziś dzień. I to jest przykład tej wtórności potrzebnej, pokazującej, że jak się chce, to można grając pod te starocie stworzyć coś, co będzie się podobać, co będzie miało ducha i słyszalne zrozumienie tej muzyki, niezaprzeczalną do niej pasję. Od Warmoon Lord wielu mogło by się uczyć, jak grać stary Black Metal i nie zostać posądzonym o zrzynanie, czy, jak kto woli, ogrzewanie kotletów. Tu po prostu jest ta magia, którą obecnie można znaleźć niemal tylko na scenie undergroundowej, i to też nie tak od razu. Może z czasem ta płyta zniknie gdzieś w odmętach podziemia, chociaż wcale jej tego nie życzę, ale z całą pewnością będzie kiedyś poszukiwana i kultowa (nakład jest niewielki), a ci, którzy ją poznają, nigdy nie zapomną. Jeżeli Warmoon Lord podąży tą ścieżką i z czasem uraczy nas kolejnym wydawnictwem, to z całą pewnością zaskarbi sobie przychylność sporej grupy Black Metalowych maniaków. W tej sztuce wśród nowości to według mnie absolutny mus. Szacun dla Wolfspell Records za wydanie tego materiału!

Another phenomenal project that has recently emerged on the Finnish land. We just had Vargrav that is slightly symphonic act, very close to '90s Limbonic Art and Emperor, and now Warmoon Lord has appeared. Behind this band stands Vechi Vrajitor (Juuso Peltola), which some may already know from the dark ambient project Old Sorcery. Here we also have a return to the years of splendor of the scene. The album is full of references to the classics of Finnish Black Metal (Satanic Warmaster, Warloghe, Horna, Thy Serpent), the bands that were once part of Les Legions Noires (Vlad Tepes, Mutiilation, Belketre) are also very strongly heard here - "Goat Horns" by Nocturnal Mortum (you can hear the keyboard influences very clearly, especially in the song "Obsessing Darkness"), sometimes "Pentagram" by Gorgoroth or "Stormblast" by Dimmu Borgir. It's just plenty of stuff here. Thoughtful and splendidly played, it perfectly recalls those times, the mentioned bands and records. "Burning Banners of the Funereal War" has preserved in its sound, aesthetics and song structure everything that these classics are adored for and listened to this day. And this is an example of this needed recurrence in the subject, showing that if you want to, you can base on old stuff and create something that will please the listeners, playing with this spirit, having the understanding of this music, undeniable passion for it. From Warmoon Lord, many could learn how to play old Black Metal and not be accused of stealing, or, if you prefer, recreating. Here is simply the magic that can currently be found almost only on the underground scene, and it's not that easy still. Maybe, as the time will pass, this record will disappear somewhere in the depths of the underground, although I do not wish it at all, but it will certainly be sought after and cult (limited amount), and those who know it will never forget it. If Warmoon Lord follows this path and, over time, treats us with another release, it will definitely win the favor of a large group of true Black Metal fans. In this art, among the novelties, it is an absolute must. Respect to Wolfspell Records for releasing this material!

Odi Profanum Vulgus - Bug (Self-released 2019)

Dla wielu Odi Profanum Vulgus może być swoistym odkryciem, nowością. Zespół nie jest przesadnie znany, mimo iż jego początki to już bodajże 2004 rok. Nagrali dwa dema, jedną EPkę - "Explicite" (2009) i potem była długa cisza aż do ubiegłego roku, kiedy pojawił się "Bug". Długograj tej biłgorajskiej ekipy to dosyć misterna, miejscami lekko progresywna mieszanka Thrash, Death i Black Metalu. Tak, są tu elementy każdego z tych stylów. Tego pierwszego, Thrashu, jest tu w sumie najmniej. Pojawia się czasem w strukturach riffów, nadając im tej swoistej chwytliwości. Reszta to już czysty Black/Death. Miejscami melodyjny, urozmaicony, sypiący blastami. Naprzemiennie uderza w nas ciężkie, masywne brzmienie, wolniejsze fragmenty, a z drugiej szybkie, agresywne pasaże. I to nie w oddzielnych utworach, a w każdym z nich. Cały czas coś się dzieje. Całokształt zespala naprawdę świetny wokal Stygmata. To wszystko tworzy nam pejzaż dzieła kompleksowego, które nie nudzi i co chwila potrafi czymś zaskoczyć. Album jest dopracowany, wszystko chodzi tu jak w zegarku. Co ważne, kompleksowość tej płyty sprawia, że nie jest to materiał, którego odsłuchy skończą się na jednej, dwóch wizytach CD w odtwarzaczu. O nie! Ten album będzie w stanie odkryć coś przed słuchaczem nawet po dłuższym czasie obcowania z nim. Jest to nad wyraz udana hybryda różnych gatunków i inspiracji, pomysłowa i w sporym stopniu oryginalna. No i ta wymowna okładka - robak toczący kulę z ludzi. Jakże na czasie... Co mogę powiedzieć więcej. Z pewnością polecam ten album wszystkim, którzy otwarci są na Metal w wydaniu nieschematycznym i nieoczywistym, "Bug" z pewnością jest właśnie taką płytą. Złożoną i ambitną. For many Odi Profanum Vulgus can be a kind of discovery, a novelty. The band is not widely known, although its beginnings are probably 2004. They recorded two demos, one EP - "Explicite" (2009) and then there was a long silence until last year, when "Bug" was released. Full-length of this band from Biłgoraj (Poland) is a rather intricate, slightly progressive mix of Thrash, Death and Black Metal. Yes, there are elements of each of these styles. The first one, Thrash, is the least here. Occurs sometimes in riff structures, giving them that specific catchiness. The rest is pure Black/Death. In some places melodic, varied, filled with blasts. On one hand, we are struck by heavy, massive sound, slower fragments, and on the other by fast, aggressive passages. And not in separate songs, but in each of them. Something is happening all the time. The whole is bound by really good vocals by Stygmata. All this creates a landscape of a comprehensive work that does not bore and can surprise with something all the time. The album is well composed, everything works like clockwork. Importantly, the comprehensiveness of this record means that it is not a material that will end up limited to one or two visits of the CD in the player. Oh no! This album will be able to uncover something for the listener even after a long time interacting with it. It is a very successful hybrid of various styles and inspirations, inventive and to a large extent original. And this meaningful cover - a beetle rolling a ball of people. Just how it fits current world situation ... What can I say more. I certainly recommend this album to everyone who is open to Metal in a non-schematic and non-obvious version, "Bug" is certainly such an album. Complex and ambitious. I wonder why it is a self-release, it suprises that there was no publisher interested in the band so far. If any label reads these words, then I call you forth - check this album out!

Ruho - The Devout Thrum (Fallen Temple 2019)

Kolejna nowość z Finlandii, ale tym razem bez przesadnych fajerwerków. Ruho to przede wszystkim odniesienie do tego bardziej intensywnego, a mniej atmosferycznego oblicza Black Metalu, acz wciąż zakorzenionego w starociach z dalekimi echami Darkthrone. Na pięćdziesięciominutowy "The Devout Thrum" składają się cztery długie, niemal jednolite kompozycje. Ambitny krok, ale nic specjalnie nie wychodzi przed szereg. Album sprawia wrażenie tak spójnego, że czasem ciężko nie odnieść wrażenia, jakby słuchało się jednego długiego utworu zamiast czterech. Wyjątkiem jest "Devoured to Dust" (ostatni numer na płycie), w którym jest najwięcej urozmaiceń i charakterystyczny, jakby heavy metalowy riff w środku (oczywiście odpowiednio zagrany, aby nie odstawał od ogólnej estetyki). Trochę brakuje tej płycie oryginalności i czegoś, co bardziej wyróżniłoby ją na tle innych wydawnictw i zespołów. Niby jest trochę ciekawych melodii w tej całej energicznej kanonadzie oraz posępnego i niepokojącego klimatu, ale to jakoś za mało. Przynajmniej w moim odczuciu. Niemniej nie brakuje tu starannego, potężnego brzmienia (zwłaszcza perkusji) oraz warsztatu wykonawczego. Panowie naprawdę świetnie tu sobie radzą. Dzięki temu "The Devout Thrum" jest pod względem technicznym dobrą, solidną płytą. Tego odmówić jej nie można. Na razie wypada to ogólnie przeciętnie, acz jestem ciekaw, co Ruho zaprezentuje wraz z kolejnym, trzecim materiałem. Liczę na coś bardziej charakterystycznego, aby mogli się wyróżnić i bardziej zapaść w pamięć.

Another novelty from Finland, but this time without any special fireworks. Ruho is primarily a reference to this more intense and less atmospheric face of Black Metal, although still rooted in old stuff with distant echoes of Darkthrone. The 50-minute "The Devout Thrum" consists of four long, almost close-sounding compositions. An ambitious step, but nothing especially oversteps here. The album gives the impression of being so coherent that sometimes it is hard not to get the impression as if you were listening to one long song instead of four. The exception is "Devoured to Dust" (the last track on the album), which has the most variety and characteristic, heavy-metal-like riff in the middle (of course properly played so that it does not stand out from the general aesthetics). This album lacks originality a bit and something that would make it stand out more from other releases and bands. There are some interesting melodies in all this energetic canonade and a gloomy and disturbing climate, but this is not enough. At least in my opinion. However, there is no lack of proper, powerful sound (especially drums) and performance workshop. They really know what they are doing. Thanks to this "The Devout Thrum" is technically a good, solid record. You can't deny it. Generally, it's rather average, but I'm curious what Ruho will present with the next, third material. I look forward to something more characteristic so that they can stand out and become more recognisable.

Vampyric Blood - Watching the Nights Rot in Eternal Melancholy (Dark Adversary 2019)

Finlandia... Ostatnio coraz bardziej przekonuję się do stwierdzenia, że ich scena black metalowa jest płodniejsza i ciekawsza od osławionej norweskiej czy nawet obecnie wiodącą w skali światowej. Nie dość, że mogą pochwalić się taką gwardią jak Beherit, Archgoat, Horna, Warloghe, Azazel czy Thy Serpent, to jeszcze co i raz rodzą się tam naprawdę świetne nowe grupy i projekty. Jednym z nich jest - mający już 9 lat stażu na scenie - Vampyric Blood. Ten jednoosobowy twór to te same klimaty - i w sporej części estetyka - w jakich poruszają się Vargrav, Satanic Warmaster, Drowning the Light czy Black Funeral. Jest to surowy, lekko melodyjny Black Metal, w którym sporą rolę odgrywają majestatyczne, czasem tajemnicze klawiszowe tła. Generalnie nacisk postawiony jest na atmosferę i odpowiedni klimat. I takowy tutaj jest. "Watching the Nights Rot in Eternal Melancholy" to 3 kompozycje - 2 dłuższe osadzone we wspomnianych klimatach (w sumie jest tu też coś ze starego Ancient oraz Aeternus) oraz jedna, która jest praktycznie tworem dark ambientowym. Czasem o takie zabiegi pokusza się wspomniany Satanic Warmaster, ostatnia płyta to tego doskonały przykład ("Fimbulwinter"). Co tu dużo mówić. W tych niespełna 20 minutach materiału jest magia i wyczucie tworzonej sztuki, jej estetyki i namacalna pasja. To zawsze dla mnie najważniejszy czynnik. Chce się do tego wracać, chce się tego słuchać. Tak być powinno!

Jeżeli nieobce są wam zespoły, jakie wymieniłem parę chwil temu, to uważam, że nie tylko musicie Vampyric Blood posłuchać, ale i po prostu mieć jakieś płyty tego projektu. Obecnie Lord of Shadows, człowiek stojący za Vampyric Blood, ma na swoim koncie m.in. dwa pełne albumy i dwie EPki (w tym niniejszą). Stanowczo polecam!

Finland ... Recently, I am more and more convinced to say that their black metal scene is more prolific and interesting than the famous Norwegian, or even world's leading one. Not only can they be proud of such bands as Beherit, Archgoat, Horna, Warloghe, Azazel or Thy Serpent, but also of being a country where really great new groups and projects are born frequently. One of them is Vampyric Blood - already 9 years on the scene. This one-man band is of the same atmosphere and aesthetics in which Vargrav, Satanic Warmaster, Drowning the Light and Black Funeral operate. It is raw, slightly melodic Black Metal in which majestic, sometimes mysterious keyboard backgrounds play a significant role. Generally, the emphasis is on atmosphere and the right climate. And it is all here. "Watching the Nights Rot in Eternal Melancholy" consists of 3 compositions - 2 longer, embedded in the mentioned climates (in fact, there is also something from the old Ancient and Aeternus in it) and one which is practically a dark ambient creation. Sometimes Satanic Warmaster does such things, their last album is a perfect example ("Fimbulwinter"). What can I say. In these less than 20 minutes of material there is magic and a sense of created art, its aesthetics and clear passion. It's always the most important factor for me. You want to go back to it, you want to listen to it again. It should always be like that!

If you are familiar with the bands I mentioned a few moments ago, I think that you not only have to listen to Vampyric Blood, but also simply have some CDs of this project. Currently Lord of Shadows, the man behind Vampyric Blood, has - among others - two full albums and two EPs (including this one). Strongly recommended!

Imperator - The Time Before Time (Nameless Productions 1991/ Nuclear War Now! 2019)

Zespół i album można powiedzieć legendarny. Nie wiem, czy Imperator nie jest tą najważniejszą grupą z polskiego metalowego podziemia, która cieszy się aż tak zauważalną sławą, poważaniem i szacunkiem fanów starego i młodego pokolenia. To w końcu oni mieli być niegdyś wydani przez Deathlike Silence, a sam Bariel wymienił tony listów zarówno z Deadem, jak i Euronymousem. Ale do rzeczy. "The Time Before Time" to jedyny pełny album w dorobku grupy. Ale za to jaki! Nie ma co się oszukiwać, to Death Metal najwyższej próby! Są tu marszowe, ale i karkołomne riffy (niekiedy wciąż mogące się poszczycić nieco thrashową chwytliwością), trochę technicznych zawiłości, raptowne zmiany tempa i porywające solówki. Wszystko to okala bezlitosna sekcja rytmiczna i nienawistny wokal Bariela. Brzmienie zachowało sporo surowości, co dodatkowo nadało płycie tego specyficznego oldschoolowego klimatu (bardzo podobny ma "Hell Awaits" Slayer, a to już nie lada porównanie). "The Time Before Time" to chaos, ale chaos misternie zaplanowany, uporządkowany - jakkolwiek by to nie brzmiało. To kolejna wyjątkowa cecha tej płyty. Z jednej strony jest to album prosty, bezpośredni w swym przekazie, a z drugiej złożony, muzycznie bogaty. Tym materiałem Imperator stanął na podium naszej Death Metalowej sceny obok takich dzieł jak "The Ultimate Incantation" (1992) Vader czy "Calamity" (1994) Betrayer. I z pewnością można powiedzieć, że to "The Time Before Time" rozpętało na naszej scenie piekło, które dało bodziec tylu niesamowitym zespołom i płytom, jakie ukazały się na polskiej scenie w kolejnych latach. Śmiem twierdzić, że Imperator był najbardziej ekstremalnie grającą grupą tamtego czasu.
Ogromna szkoda, że w czasie gdy album się ukazał, jego promocja kulała i tak niewiele osób miało go na swojej półce. Został on pierwotnie wydany tylko na winylu przez Nameless Productions należące do Tomasza Grabowskiego. Dopiero w 1997 doczekał się pierwszej porządnej reedycji na CD dzięki Pagan Records. Istnieje jeszcze edycja kompaktowa z 1994, wydana przez Loud Out, ale nie mam pewności, czy była ona autoryzowana przez zespół. W 2019 Nuclear War Now! pokusił się o wznowienie albumu na winylu i CD (zdjęcia poniżej) i jest to moim zdaniem najlepsze wydanie tej płyty, jakie się do tej pory pojawiło. Takie, na jakie ten album zasługuje!
Mimo wydawniczego pecha w latach 90. i zniknięciu zespołu ze sceny na wiele kolejnych lat, "The Time Before Time" wsiąkł głęboko w podziemie i znali go po czasie wszyscy siedzący w temacie. Wystarczyło to, aby przetrwał w świadomości i pamięci słuchaczy, zapisując się na kartach historii sceny wielkimi literami. To nie tylko Death Metalowa płyta, to wciąż żywa legenda!

The band and the album that can be described as legendary. I do not know if the Imperator is not the most important group from the Polish metal underground, the one which enjoys such noticeable fame and respect from fans of the old and young generation. After all, they were to be once published by Deathlike Silence, and Bariel himself exchanged tons of letters with both Dead and Euronymous. But to the point. "The Time Before Time" is the only full-length album in the group's discography. A hell of an album! There is no doubt, it's Death Metal of the highest quality! There are marching and neckbreaking riffs (sometimes still having that thrashy catchiness), some technical complexities, rapid tempo changes and thrilling solos. All this is surrounded by a merciless rhythm section and Bariel's hateful vocals. The sound retained a lot of rawness, which additionally gave it that specific oldschool atmosphere ("Hell Awaits" by Slayer is very similar, which is quite a comparison). "The Time Before Time" is chaos, but chaos carefully planned - however it may sound. This is another unique feature of this album. On the one hand, simple, direct in its message, and on the other, complex, musically rich. With this material, Imperator stands on the podium of our Death Metal scene, alongside such works as "The Ultimate Incantation" (1992) by Vader or Betrayer's "Calamity" (1994). And it can certainly be said that "The Time Before Time" unleashed hell, which gave an impulse to so many amazing bands and records that appeared on the Polish scene in the following years. I dare to say that Imperator was the most extreme group of that time.
It is a pity that when the album was released, its promotion was lame, and so few people had it on their shelves. It was originally released only on vinyl by Nameless Productions belonging to Tomasz Grabowski. It wasn't until 1997 that it had its first solid re-release on CD, thanks to Pagan Records. There is also a compact edition from 1994, released by Loud Out, but I'm not sure if it was authorized by the band. In 2019 Nuclear War Now! got tempted to reissue the album on vinyl and CD (photos below) and in my opinion this is the best release of this record that has appeared so far. The one this album truly deserves!
Despite the publishing bad luck in the '90s and the band's disappearance for many years to come, "The Time Before Time" sank deep into the underground and everyone in the subject knew it after a while. It was enough to survive in the consciousness and memory of its listeners to make its recognisable place on the pages of the scene's history. It's not just a Death Metal album, it's a living legend!

Mayhem - Daemon (Century Media 2019)

Niektórzy skarżą się, że Mayhem dokonało autoplagiatu, powieliło pomysły i patenty znane już z "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" czy "Chimery"; że "Daemon" to dzieło przeciętne i mało interesujące. Ot, pójście na łatwiznę. Absolutnie się z tym nie zgadzam! Faktycznie, zespół poszedł w ślady swojego niedoścignionego klasyka, ale potrafił to odniesienie przekształcić w coś nowego, o nowej jakości i coś, co, mam wrażenie, przywraca ten zespół na dobry tor. Bezpośredniość i konwencjonalizm, jaki charakteryzował "Chimerę" też zrobił tej płycie dobrze. "Daemon" to dzieło dojrzałego zespołu, który wie, czego chce i jak to osiągnąć. Ten album to prawdziwe, uwielbiane oblicze Mayhem. Moim zdaniem od czasów wymienionego na początku kamienia milowego z ich dorobku, ten zespół nie brzmiał tak dobrze i nie proponował tak dobrych kompozycji (no może poza "Esoteric Warfare" - dla mnie to kapitalny album!). To nie jest tylko "dobra" płyta, to coś znacznie więcej. Co jeszcze warto zaznaczyć, to spójność tego materiału. Ma oczywiście utwory, które mocno zapadają w pamięć, takie jak "Agenda Ignis", "Falsified and Hated" czy chociażby "Invoke the Oath". "Daemon" to przede wszystkim dzieło zwarte, którego należy słuchać w całości, tu tkwi jego siła, to jeden lity organizm. Usłyszeć tę płytę wykonywaną na żywo w całości to byłoby coś! Nie jest to materiał, jak pozornie można by pomyśleć, pozostający w tzw. strefie komfortu, to próba redefinicji samych siebie, przeskoczenie lub przynajmniej dorównanie postawionej sobie niegdyś poprzeczce. I zespół wyszedł obronną ręką. Może nie skoczyli wyżej, ale udowodnili, że potrafią wznieść się praktycznie tak wysoko jak kiedyś. Tak, dokładnie, i nie ma co szukać dziury w całym. To materiał łączący Mayhem anno 1993/94 z obecnym. Ach, te basowe pasaże przywodzące na myśl "Life Eternal" (kłania się tu nie tylko bonusowy "Everlasting Dying Flame")... Attila jest w świetnej formie wokalnej, operuje głosem na różne sposoby, wciąż wykazując tę charakterystyczną, lekko teatralną manierę, a Teloch - gros kompozycji jest jego autorstwa - tworzy jakby natchniony duchem Euronymousa. Ja nie mogę się od tej płyty oderwać od kiedy wpadła mi w łapy. Powiem krótko - polecam, bo to Mayhem, o jaki walczyliśmy!

Some complain that Mayhem copied themselves, duplicated the ideas and patents already known from "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" or "Chimera", that "Daemon" is an average and uninteresting work. Just an easy choice to fit the demands. I absolutely disagree with this! In fact, the band followed the footsteps of their unsurpassed classic, but they were able to transform this reference into something new, new quality, and something that, I feel, brings the band back on a good path. The directness and conventionalism that characterized "Chimera" also did this album well. "Daemon" is a work of a mature band that knows what they want and how to achieve it. This album is the true, beloved incarnation of Mayhem. In my opinion, since the time of their milestone mentioned at the beginning, this band did not sound that good and did not propose such excellent compositions (well, except for "Esoteric Warfare" - yes, for me it is a fantastic album!). This is not just a "good" album, it is much more than that. What else is worth noting is the consistency of this material. Of course, it has songs that are very memorable, such as "Agenda Ignis", "Falsified and Hated" or even "Invoke the Oath". "Daemon" is primarily a consistent work, which should be listened to in its entirety, here lies its strength, it is one solid organism. Hearing this album live in such form would be something great! This is not a material, as you might think, remaining in the so-called comfort zone, it is an attempt to redefine themselves, to jump over or at least reach the once set bar. And this is a successful attempt. Maybe they didn't jump higher, but they proved that they can rise almost as high as they used to. Yes, exactly, and it is pointless to look for a hole in the whole. This material combines Mayhem anno 1993/94 with the current one. Ah, these bass passages reminding of "Life Eternal" (not only the bonus "Everlasting Dying Flame" bows here)... Attila is in great vocal form, uses voice in various ways, still showing this characteristic, slightly theatrical manner, and Teloch - he is the author of the majority of the compositions - creates as if inspired by the spirit of Euronymous. I can't tear myself away from this record since adding it to my collection. I will say briefly, I totally recommend it, because it is the Mayhem we fought for!
