1349 - The Infernal Pathway (Season of Mist 2019)

Dla mnie numer jeden, jeżeli chodzi o tegoroczne wydawnictwa Black Metalowe! 1349 może nie są jakoś mocno rozchwytywani, powszechnie znani, ale są zespołem o silnej i niegasnącej pozycji, nie tylko na scenie norweskiej/europejskiej, ale i ogólnoświatowej. Ta ekipa jest, moim zdaniem, symbolem trwałości i niezłomności w tej muzyce. Od lat idą swoją własną ścieżką, nie oglądając się na nikogo, na żadne trendy. Zespołem, który wciąż wierny jest swoim korzeniom i temu, co niegdyś sobie postanowili - grać Black Metal bez upiększeń, wierny tej bezkompromisowej, bezpośredniej formie, z nawiązaniem do początków stylu i tego jakim oni chcą aby był.

"The Infernal Pathway" jest jakby zwieńczeniem ich dotychczasowych dzieł, materiałem łączącym dawniejsze osiągnięcia grupy z tym nowszymi. Coś jakby wypadkowa "Beyond the Apocalypse", "Demonoir" (ponowne wykorzystanie i nawiązanie do konceptu Tuneli Seta) oraz "Massive Cauldron of Chaos". Jest ta zauważalna miejscami Thrashowa domieszka (w sumie była ona obecna już od samych początków 1349, co wciąż odróżnia ich od większości zespołów z tego gatunku), jest sporo klimatu, budowania atmosfery, elementy melodii, nośne, tnące riffy i ogień, który zawsze ich płytom towarzyszy. Nie brakuje tu też tego potrzebnego, mocarnego uderzenia, chaosu, i bynajmniej nie chodzi mi tu o nieład. Kolejną cechą "The Infernal Pathway" jest jego niezwykła dojrzałość, spójność. Albumowi nie brakuje absolutnie niczego. Jest namacalnym, słyszalnym dowodem na to, że Black Metal w swojej surowości, ekstremalnej formie nie musi brzmieć źle, brudno. Tutaj, właśnie dzięki bardzo dopracowanemu brzmieniu, misternej produkcji, powstała płyta esencjonalna, przepełniona zarówno formą, jak i treścią. Takie albumy predysponują w swoim czasie do miana klasyków i dzieł, śmiem twierdzić, mogących inspirować innych. Co ważne, i co zawsze sobie cenię, to natychmiastowa chęć powrotu do danego materiału. "The Infernal Pathway" może się poszczycić tym, że emanuje syndromem "play again". Płyta wciąga, i fakt tego, że nie ma tu dłużyzn - jest dynamicznie przez całe ponad 40 minut jej trwania - z marszu kusi do odpalenia jej ponownie. Posłuchajcie otwierającego "Abyssos Antithesis", następującego po nim "Through Eyes of Stone", singlowego "Dodskamp" czy gnającego na złamanie karku "Striding the Chasm", a wszystko stanie się oczywiste i płytka tak samo Wami zawładnie, jak mną.
W kwestii podsumowania powiem jedno: 7., album w dorobku 1349 to dzieło, do którego nie ma startu wiele powstałych w tym roku materiałów, i to nawet zespołów o jeszcze większej od nich renomie. Absolutne opus magnum w ich dorobku i najprawdopodobniej moja płyta roku!

For me, number one when it comes to this year's Black Metal releases! 1349 may not be well-sought after, widely known, but they are a band with a strong and indelible position, not only on the Norwegian/European scene, but also on the global one. This band is, in my opinion, a symbol of durability and steadfastness in this music. For years, they have been following their own path, not looking at anyone, any trends. A band that is still true to their roots and what they once decided - to play Black Metal without embellishments, faithful to this uncompromising, direct form, referring to the beginnings of style and the way they want it to be.
"The Infernal Pathway" is like the culmination of their previous works, a material combining the group's past achievements with the newer ones. Something like the mixture of "Beyond the Apocalypse", "Demonoir" (reusing and referring to the concept of Tunnels of Set) and "Massive Cauldron of Chaos". There is this noticeable admixture of Thrash (well, it was present from the very beginning of 1349, which still distinguishes them from most bands of this genre), there is a lot of climate, building the atmosphere, melody elements, carrying, cutting riffs and fire, which always present in their works. There is no lack of this needed, powerful blow, chaos, and I do not mean disorder here. Another feature of "The Infernal Pathway" is its remarkable maturity and coherence. The album has absolutely nothing missing. It is tangible, audible proof that Black Metal in its rawness, extreme form does not have to sound bad, dirty. Here, thanks to a very refined sound, intricate production, an essential album was created, filled with both form and content. Such albums predispose in their time to the name of classics and works, I dare say, that could inspire others. What is important and what I always value, is an immediate desire to return to a given material. "The Infernal Pathway" can be proud to possess the "play again" syndrome. The record draws, and the fact that there are no longueurs here - it is dynamic throughout the entire 40 minutes of its duration - tempts you to play it again. Listen to the opening "Abyssos Antithesis", its follower "Through Eyes of Stone", the single one "Dodskamp" or "Striding the Chasm" rushing hell-bent, and everything will become obvious and you will love this album as much as I do.
Regarding the summary, I will say one thing: the 7th album of 1349 is a work to which many of the materials created this year, and even bands with an even greater reputation than them, have no start. An absolute magnum opus in their achievements and, most likely, my album of the year!

Jako że jeszcze chwilę mi zejdzie z recenzją "The Infernal Pathway", postanowiłem przypomnieć na poczekaniu poprzedni krążek 1349. Panie i Panowie, jeżeli wciąż powstają takie płyty na norweskiej ziemi, to tamtejszy Black Metal jeszcze długo będzie miał coś do powiedzenia i to nie tylko w kwestii przeszłości. "Massive Cauldron of Chaos" to chwalebny powrót tego zespołu do brzmień ze swoich pierwszych dwóch wydawnictw i połączenie tamtej furii z nowymi pomysłami. Uwydatnienie tego thrashowego podłoża, jakie od zawsze tkwiło u podstaw muzyki 1349, mimo że, nie jest to może tak na pierwszy rzut oka oczywiste. Konkretne łojenie w najlepszym wydaniu. Co prawda, nie są to już tak surowe klimaty, bo warstwa brzmieniowa i kompozycyjna jest bardzo dopracowana, materiał jest dynamiczny, pełen mocy i przemyślany w najdrobniejszym szczególe. Jak to mawia sam Ravn, nigdzie nie jest powiedziane, że Black Metal musi brzmieć źle. Niemniej jednak kryje się w tym ta pierwotna furia tej grupy, nie ma tu kombinowania, po prostu konkretne uderzenie od początku do końca. Płyta jest bez wątpienia bardzo bezpośrednia i organiczna. Wystarczy posłuchać chociażby promującego ją "Slaves", mówi sam za siebie. Riffy na "Massive Cauldron of Chaos" są bardzo nośne, mocarne i świetnie zgrywają się z mrocznym i złowieszczym charakterem Black Metalowej sztuki wykonywanej przez 1349. Swoiste połączenie starej szkoły ze świeżym podejściem do tematu. O czym jeszcze warto wspomnieć to niesamowita forma zespołu; to już w końcu tyle lat, a grają tu na najwyższych obrotach, jakby pod wpływem jakieś nieokiełznanej siły; to bez wątpienia jeden z najbardziej agresywnych albumów w ich dorobku. Wokale Ravna na tym albumie to dowód na to, że jest w czołówce ludzi w swoim fachu, dopełniają tu dzieła niczym przysłowiowa wisienka na torcie, totalne zniszczenie! Podobne wnioski można też wysnuć w kwestii partii perkusji Frosta, nie siedzi gdzieś z tyłu, a siecze na tym samym poziomie co gitary i wokal, gra tutaj istotną rolę i jest znaczącym źródłem agresji wydobywającej się z tych nagrań.
Album nie jest może najdłuższy, trwa ledwo ponad pół godziny, ale za to rekompensuje ten fakt swoją wysoką jakością i ładunkiem emocji. Moim zdaniem 1349 jest obecnie jedną z wiodących grup norweskiej sceny, a takie albumy jak ten tylko ów fakt potwierdzają! Polecam wszystkim i każdemu z osobna!

As I will leave the review of "The Infernal Pathway" for a while, I decided to remind the previous album of 1349. Ladies and gentlemen, if such records are still being made on Norwegian soil, then their Black Metal will still have something to say and not only in case of the past. "Massive Cauldron of Chaos" is the glorious return to the sound of their first two releases and a combination of that fury with new ideas. It emphasizes this thrash root that has always been at the heart of 1349 music, although it may not be so obvious at first glance. Concrete, intensive stuff at its best. It is true that there is no place for a raw production here, because the sound and composition layer is very refined, the material is dynamic, full of power and thought out to the smallest detail. As Ravn says himself, nowhere it is said that Black Metal must sound bad. Nevertheless, this group's original fury is hidden in it, there is no combination here, just a direct strike from beginning to end. The disc is undoubtedly very direct and organic. Just listen to the single "Slaves", it speaks for itself. Riffs on "Massive Cauldron of Chaos" are very strong, powerful and harmonize well with the dark and ominous character of Black Metal art performed by 1349. A peculiar combination of oldschool with a fresh approach to the subject. What else is worth mentioning is the amazing form of the band; it's been so many years, and they play here at the highest quality, as if under the influence of some unbridled force; it is without doubt one of the most aggressive albums in their career. Ravn's vocals on this album are proof that he is at the forefront of people performing vocals in this style, total destruction! Similar conclusions can also be drawn regarding the drum parts by Frost, it is not set somewhere in the back, but work at the same level as the guitars and vocals, play an important role here and are a significant source of aggression coming from these recordings.
The album is maybe not the longest, it lasts barely over half an hour, but it compensates for this fact with its high quality and emotional load. In my opinion, 1349 is currently one of the leading groups of the Norwegian scene, and such albums like this only confirm this fact! I recommend it to everyone!
