Trupi Swąd - Nekromancja (Putrid Cult 2022)

Przyznam, że na pierwszy, pełny album Trupiego Swądu czekałem bardzo. Demo "W Imię Diabła" było nader obiecujące, było czymś na swój sposób świeżym w staroszkolnym graniu, nową kombinacją wpływów i inspiracji. Dalej mamy nawiązania do brzmień pierwszych ekstremalnych ekip z lat 90. i rasowy speed/black/thrash metal. "Nekromancja" to kocioł, w którym wymieszano atmosferę starego Mercyful Fate (zwłaszcza intro wprowadza ten klimat), chwytliwość W.A.S.P., bluźnierstwo i agresję Sarcofago oraz estetykę Kata z czasów "666". No czysta poezja dla metalowych purystów, hehe! Tak, Trupi Swąd to bezpośrednie, surowe metalowe granie, które nie ogląda się na jakąkolwiek poprawność. Pierwszy album Trupiego Swądu to muzyka metalowego buntu, bardzo kojarzy mi się właśnie z pierwszą płytą Kata, debiutem Sarcofago, a nawet gdzieś tam z "Kawalerią Szatana" Turbo. Ma w sobie ducha tych materiałów. Trup się ściele, leje się krew, wykluwają się bestie, wszelkie bluźnierstwo wyrzucane jest z tekstów niczym pociski z karabinu maszynowego . Oczywiście nie brakuje nawiązań do Pierwszej Fali spod znaku Venom, wczesnego Sodom czy Bathory. Może nie jest to tak ewidentnie słyszalne z każdej strony, ale te zespoły też w tych kompozycjach siedzą. To po prostu kwintesencja starego, diabelskiego metalu! Nie przeszkadza tu nawet zaprogramowana perkusja, bo została zrobiona na tyle dobrze, że nie kłuje w uszy. Płyta pierwsza klasa - brać i słuchać!

I admit that I was waiting a lot for the first full-length album by Trupi Swąd. The demo "W Imię Diabła" was very promising, it was something fresh in its own way in oldschool playing, a new combination of influence and inspiration. Still we have references to the sounds of the first extreme bands from the 90s and pure speed/black/thrash metal. "Nekromancja" is a cauldron in which the atmosphere of the old Mercyful Fate (especially the intro introduces this), the catchiness of W.A.S.P., the blasphemy and aggression of Sarcofago and the aesthetics of the Kat from the time of "666" is mixed. Well, something totally for metal purists, haha! Yes, Trupi Sąd is direct, raw metal playing that doesn't seem care about any rules. The first album of Trupy Swąd is the music of metal rebellion, I associate it very much with the first album of Kat, the debut of Sarcofago, and even somewhere with "Kawaleria Szatana" by Turbo. It has the spirit of these materials. The corpse is setting the ground, the blood is spilling, the beasts emerge, all blasphemy strikes from the lyrics like bullets from a machine gun. Of course, there are also references to the First Wave under the sign of Venom, early Sodom or Bathory. Maybe it is not so evidently heard from all sides, but these bands are also hiding in these compositions. It's just the quintessence of old devil metal! Even the programmed percussion does not bother here, because it was made so well that it doesn't hurt your ears. First class stuff - grab it and listen!

Malediction of Agony - Malediction of Agony (Putrid Cult 2022)

Ależ to jest cios! Pierwsza w tym roku tak powalająca premiera w ramach black metalu! Gdańskie Malediction of Agony idzie na swoim debiucie szlakiem przetartym przez takie grupy jak Horna, Satanic Warmaster, Sargeist, Musta Surma czy White Death. Zatem fińska szkoła w polskim wydaniu. Z tym, że zespół brzmi bardzo potężnie. Rozkręciłem album na cały regulator i ten materiał po prostu niszczy. Płyta niemal rozwala ściany! Jej nostalgiczne, bardziej melodyjne momenty (jak fińska scena jest inspiracją, to tego zabraknąć nie może), ale i te siarczyste i surowe nabierają w takim wydaniu niesamowitej mocy. I jeszcze ten wokal w stylu Ihsahna z pierwszych dwóch materiałów Emperor czy też Nazgul ze wcześniej wspomnianej Horny/SW! Płytę wieńczy ambientowy "Demons Winter", który to z kolei przypomina bardzo swą estetyką "Tomhet" Burzum. Co tu dużo mówić, słucha się tego wybornie! Zespół zaserwował tu prawdziwą black metalową ucztę. I jeżeli ten album nie pojawi się w podsumowaniach na koniec roku, to po prostu zwątpię w fanów tej sztuki i gusta ludzi. Na koniec, chcąc być dokładnym, materiał został pierwotnie wydany na kasecie już rok temu przez Warm Moon Records, a dopiero teraz doczekał się edycji na CD. Z tego, co wiem, kaseta wciąż jest do dorwania, jeżeli ktoś taki nośnik preferuje. W każdym razie, ten album bezapelacyjnie trzeba mieć.

What a great stuff it is! This year's first such a stunning premiere in terms of black metal! On its debut, Malediction of Agony from Gdańsk (Poland) follows a trail that was cleared by groups such as Horna, Satanic Warmaster, Sargeist, Musta Surma and White Death. So the Finnish school of playing in the Polish version. Except that the band sounds very powerful. I turned the album on full blast and this material just destroys. The sound almost smashes the walls! Its nostalgic, more melodic moments (if the Finnish scene is an inspiration, it cannot be missed), but also the bitter and raw ones gain incredible power in such a form. And that vocals in the style of Ihsahn from the first two Emperor releases or Nazgul from the aforementioned Horna/SW! The album is crowned with ambient "Demons Winter", which with its aesthetics reminds me of "Tomhet" by Burzum. What can I say, it's great to listen to! The band serves a real black metal feast here. And if this album will not appear in the end-of-year summaries, I will simply doubt the fans of this art and the tastes of people. Finally, to be exact, the material was originally released on cassette a year ago by Warm Moon Records, and now it's finally released on CD. As far as I know, the cassette can still be found, if someone prefers this form. Anyway, this album is a must-have.

The Devil's Sermon - Czarna Jaźń (Putrid Cult 2021)

Żałuję, że nie wystarczyło mi czasu, aby napisać o tej płycie jeszcze w 2021 roku. Jest szansa, że pojawiłby się w moim TOP 5 za ubiegły rok. Drugi pełny album The Devil's Sermon miał swoją premierę się w tym samym czasie co nowe Demonic Temple, także konkurencję miał srogą. Mimo mojej bardzo pochlebnej opinii o konkurentach, kolejny krążek The Devil's Sermon oceniam bardzo wysoko i okazuje się być ich najlepszym materiałem nagranym do tej pory. Zespół już w pełni rozwinął swój styl i zaserwował kawał znakomitego, mistycznego black metalu. Intensywne, soczyste brzmienie, znakomita atmosfera to bez wątpienia atuty sztuki The Devil's Sermon. Ilekroć obcuję z ich muzyką, to mam wrażenie brania udziału w jakimś obrzędzie, diabelskim konwencie, który poza agresją, ma do przekazania również jakiś pierwiastek duchowy, coś ponad samą muzykę. To rytuał mroku, pełen emocji, furii, ale i swoistej refleksyjności. Płyta to lekko ponad pół godziny materiału i, wraz z intrem, cztery pełne, długie kompozycje. Najbardziej czarują tu utwory "Poskręcany w Fałdy" (mój absolutny faworyt z płyty) oraz "Diabelski Orszak". Są pełne oryginalnego klimatu, partii mocnych, agresywnych, które przeplatają się z budującymi atmosferę instrumentalnymi pasażami. Coś naprawdę znakomitego! "Czarna Jaźń" bez wątpienia wciągnie każdego entuzjastę black metalu i już nie wypuści ze swych okowów. Kto nie zna jeszcze twórczości The Devil's Sermon, a pójdzie za moją radę i posłucha nowej ich płyty, to z całą pewnością sięgnie również po debiut oraz Epkę. Gwarantuję!

I wish I had enough time to write about this album in 2021. There is a chance that it would have appeared in my TOP 5 for the last year. The second full album by The Devil's Sermon was released at the same time as the new Demonic Temple, so the competition was fierce. Despite my very flattering opinion about competitors, I rate the next record of The Devil's Sermon very highly and it turns out to be their best material recorded so far. The band has already fully developed their style and served a piece of excellent, mystical black metal. Intense, solid sound, great atmosphere are undoubtedly the strengths of The Devil's Sermon. Whenever I interact with their music, I have the impression of taking part in some rite, a devil's convention, which, apart from aggression, also has a spiritual element to convey, something beyond the music itself. It is a ritual of darkness, full of emotions, fury, but also a kind of reflection. The album is slightly over half an hour of material and, together with the intro, consists of four full, long compositions. The most charming here are the songs "Poskręcany w Fałdy" (my absolute favorite from the album) and "Diabelski Orszak". They are full of original atmosphere, strong, aggressive parts that are intertwined with instrumental passages that build the atmosphere. Something really great! "Czarna Jaźń" will undoubtedly attract every black metal enthusiast and will not let go of its shackles anymore. Those who do not know the works of The Devil's Sermon yet, and will follow my advice and listen to their new album, will certainly reach for their debut and EP as well. I guarantee!

Demonic Temple - Through the Stars Into the Abyss (Putrid Cult 2021)

Trzeci już krążek w dorobku Demonic Temple był jedną z bardziej wyczekiwanych przeze mnie płyt. Poczynania zespołu śledzę od samego początku i dwa poprzednie materiały oceniałem bardzo wysoko, do tej pory do nich wracam. Gdy wreszcie dotarł do mnie "Through the Stars Into the Abyss" byłem nim zaskoczony. Mam za sobą już kilka przesłuchań i wciąż mam wrażenie, że nie wszystko odkryłem. Płyta mnie bardzo zaintrygowała. Z całą pewnością zespół nie powielił tu żadnego z poprzednich dzieł, rozwinął swój styl do formy nieokiełznanego, przestrzennego chaosu. Album pełen jest ostrych, nienawistnych dźwięków, które rozbrzmiewają w bezkresnym tle. Wokale są pełne gniewu, wykrzyczane w mroczną pustkę, w której od czasu do czasu przewija się jakaś odległa melodia nadająca płycie refleksyjnego, astralnego, ale wciąż ekstremalnego charakteru. Nie spotkałem się chyba jeszcze z płytą, w której taka forma zderzyłaby się z tak mocno obecnym muzycznych chaosem. Klimat jest bardzo oryginalny, na wskroś mroczny, zderzają się tu ze sobą pozornie dwa różne żywioły, tworząc nową jakość w black metalowej sztuce. Myślę, że będę jeszcze musiał poobcować z tą płytą dłużej, żeby wyłapać cały jej potencjał, bo on tu niewątpliwie jest. "Through the Stars Into the Abyss" budzi emocje, jest nieoczywista. Demonic Temple stworzyli bardzo ambitne i przemyślane dzieło, nie dziwię się, że album już zaczął się pojawiać na szczytach zestawień u ludzi, którzy już mieli okazję jej posłuchać. Ja bardzo polecam zmierzyć się z tym dziełem, bo jest to materiał, który długo będzie na ustach fanów ekstremalnego grania i niebawem zawojuje scenę.

The third album in Demonic Temple's output was one of the most anticipated albums by me. I have been following the band's activities from the very beginning and I have rated the two previous materials very highly and I keep coming back to them. When "Through the Stars Into the Abyss" finally hit me, I was surprised by it. I've already had a few listenings behind me and still feel like I haven't discovered everything. The album intrigued me a lot. Certainly, the group didn't duplicate any of their previous works here, they developed their style to the form of untamed, spatial chaos. The album is full of sharp, hateful sounds that resonate in the endless background. The vocals are full of anger, shouted out into a dark void where some distant melody passes from time to time and gives the album a reflective, astral, but still extreme character. I don't think I have come across an album in which such a form would collide with the present musical chaos. The atmosphere is very original, thoroughly dark, seemingly two different elements collide here, creating a new quality in black metal art. I think I will have to deal with this album longer to catch its full potential, because it is undoubtedly here. "Through the Stars Into the Abyss" evokes emotions, it is not obvious. Demonic Temple created a very ambitious and thoughtful work, I am not surprised that the album has already started to appear at the top of the charts of people who have already had the opportunity to listen to it. I highly recommend checking this out, because it is a material that will be mentioned by fans of extreme music for a long time and will soon conquer the scene.

Destroyers - Dziewięć Kręgów Zła (Putrid Cult 2020/21)

Dzięki tegorocznemu wydaniu winylowemu, które właśnie trafiło w moje ręce, zdecydowałem się spisać swoje refleksje odnośnie do nowego albumu Destroyers. W ubiegłym roku się to nie udało, jakoś przełożyłem sobie to na czas bliżej nieokreślony, aż pojawi się bodziec, żeby coś naskrobać. Destroyers jest jedną z grup które w latach 80. budowały polską scenę metalową. Ich twórczość, albo się kocha, albo się nienawidzi, lub po prostu ma się do niej pewien sentyment. Osobiście nie jestem fanem warstwy lirycznej jaką zespół reprezentuje, przynajmniej połowa tekstów kompletnie do mnie nie przemawia, natomiast muzycznie jest to naprawdę kawał solidnego metalowego grania. Bez kombinowania i w stylu lat początków naszej rodzimej sceny. Dzięki temu sięgam sobie od czasu do czasu do twórczości Destroyers. Także mogę powiedzieć, że zapisuję się do tej grupy, która ma jakiś tam sentyment. "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła" to trzeci pełny album Destroyers i powrót po wielu latach przerwy. Pierwszą rzeczą, jaką mogę o nim powiedzieć, to że jest to najlepszy album, jaki zespół nagrał. Tak, brzmi to porządnie, jest energia, fajne riffy. Głowy Ścina!" zapamiętuje się od razu) oraz "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła". Wracając do muzyki. Zespołowi bardzo dobrze zrobił zastrzyk świeżej krwi na gitarach. Praca Dominika i Tomka zbudowała jakość tego materiału. Tak naprawdę, to przede wszystkim dla ich gitar słucham tej płyty i mam ochotę do niej wracać. Dzięki nim ma odpowiedni pazur, energię i nośność i tak wyróżnia się na tle pozostałych dwóch płyt grupy. Jest prostsza, mniej tu kombinowania, jest w niej bardzo dużo tego klasycznego thrash/heavy metalu. Ukłony muszą też w tej kwestii polecieć do Marka Łozy, bo i on odpowiada za część muzyki na albumie. Podsumowując, płyta nie powala w kwestii tekstów - generalnie nie moja bajka i styl (z wyjątkami), natomiast muzycznie totalnie go kupuję i dzięki temu, będę miał ochotę go słuchać. Tutaj "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła" absolutnie wygrywa i jeżeli do kogoś nie przemawiają teksty Marka, ale ma w sobie odpowiedni dystans do tematu, to powinien albumu posłuchać. Dobra porcja klasycznych metalowych dźwięków.

Thanks to this year's vinyl release, which I have just received, I decided to write down my reflections on the new Destroyers album. Last year it didn't work out, somehow I postponed it for an indefinite period of time, until there was an incentive to write something. Destroyers is one of the groups that built the Polish metal scene in the 1980s. Their work is either loved or hated, or you just have a certain fondness for it. Personally, I am not a fan of the lyrical layer that the band represents, at least half of the lyrics do not appeal to me at all, but musically it is a really solid piece of metal music. Without combining and in the style of the early years of our Polish scene. Thanks to this, I return to the works of Destroyers from time to time. That is why I can say that I'm part of this group that has some kind of sentiment towards them. "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła" is Destroyers' third full-length album and is a returning one after many years of absence. The first thing I can say about it is that it is the best album the band has recorded. Yes, it sounds good, there's energy, nice riffs. Marek's vocals are at their prime and his singing style that is so characteristic doesn't leave him. The subject matter of the lyrics and their aesthetics have not changed over the years, so somehow I do not really see the point in discussing this issue. If you know Destroyers' works well in this respect, then you know what to expect. Nevertheless, I really liked "Zemsta Roninów" (maybe simple to the core, but "Tnie katana! Głowy ścina!" is so memorable) and "Nine Circles of Evil". Back to the music. Injecting some fresh blood on the guitars did good to the band. The work of Dominik and Tomek built the quality of this material. In fact, it's mostly for their guitars that I listen to this album and want to come back to it. Thanks to them, it has the right edge, energy and feeling and thus stands out from the other two albums of the group. It is simpler, less combining here, there is a lot of that classic thrash/heavy metal in it. Respect must also go to Marek Łoza in this matter, because he is also responsible for some of the music on the album. To sum up, the album don't win in terms of lyrics - generally not my cup of tea and style (with exceptions), but musically I totally buy it and thanks to that, I want to listen to it. Here, "Nine Circles of Evil" absolutely wins and if someone does not like Marek's lyrics, but has the appropriate distance to the topic, he should listen to the album. A good portion of classic metal sounds.

Sepulchral Cult - Immurement, Spirits and Graveyard Chants (Putrid Cult 2021)

Czas na coś z death metalu. W tym miesiącu swój debiutancki długograj wydała ekipa Sepulchral Cult. I jest to płyta, która wyraźnie wyróżnia się na tle ostatnio wydanych krajowych nowości w temacie. Przede wszystkim wieje tu bardzo mocno Szwecją spod znaku wczesnego Dismember, dem Nihilist czy jedynego pełniaka od Carnage, ale także death 'n' rollowym Entombed (tylko w surowszej odsłonie). A i na naleciałości doom metalowe też tu się znajdzie miejsce. Jednym słowem, na "Immurement, Spirits and Graveyard Chants" gruz sypie się tonami, ale jest w tym też sporo chwytliwości i nowego-starego brzmienia. Ten surowy i obskurny death 'n' rollowy element części kompozycji zyskał tu nowe życie. Nie jest to typowe melodyjne bujanie, okraszone ciężkim brzmieniem, a czysty oldschool i piwnica, dzięki czemu w tę formę wszczepiono nową jakość. Przynajmniej tak to słyszę i odbieram. Bardzo mi się taki zabieg podoba. Poza tym, mamy tu do czynienia z naprawdę dobrze zagranym death metalem o iście grobowej atmosferze. Najlepiej wchodzi pierwsze pięć numerów z płyty, ostatnie dwa już trochę zwalniają, powielają formę z poprzednich kawałków i gdzieś zgubiła się moja atencja, ale to taki drobny szczegół. Generalnie oceniam ten album na duży plus i chętnie będę do niego wracał. Ma coś w sobie, no i to brzmienie... Kawał dobrego death metalu!

Time for something from Death Metal. This month, guys from Sepulchral Cult released their debut full-length. And this is an album that clearly stands out from the recently released Polish novelties in the subject. First of all, you can hear a lot of Sweden here from under the sign of the early Dismember, Nihilist demos or the only full-length of Carnage, but also death 'n' roll by Entombed (only in a more severe form). Doom metal elements will also find a place here. In a word, on "Immurement, Spirits and Graveyard Chants" the rubble is falling with tones, but there is also a lot of catchy and new-old sound to it. This raw and dingy death 'n' roll element of the composition gained new life. It is not a typical melodic-like stuff with heavy sound, but a pure oldschool and "basement", thanks to which a new quality has been injected into this form. At least that's how I hear and perceive it. I like what has been done here very much. Besides, we are dealing with a really well-played death metal with a truly grave-like atmosphere. The best are the first five tracks from the album, the last two are slowing down a bit, they duplicate the form from the previous songs and my attention was lost somewhere, but it's a small detail really. Overall, I rate this album highly and I will be happy to come back to it. It has something in itself, and this sound... A piece of good death metal!

Szary Wilk - Wrath (Putrid Cult 2021)

Zespół z mojego rodzinnego miasta - Ostrołęki. Wreszcie z pełnym albumem i, podobnie jak w przypadku dema, w barwach Putrid Cult. Czekałem na tę płytę z niecierpliwością, a wcześniej udostępniane w sieci utwory tylko zaostrzały apetyt. Na płytę składa się pięć kompozycji perfekcyjnie przenoszących estetykę i ducha black metalu naszej sceny lat 90. w czas obecny. Już po pierwszym odsłuchu siedziałem z mentalnie rozdziawioną japą. Od czasów dobrze znanego Hellveto, Ostrołęka nie miała takiego zespołu - zespołu, który tak realnie może wzbić się na wyżyny polskiej sceny undergroundowej. Może i ich demo nie odbiło się echem, ale to, co dzieje się na tym krążku, to już kompletnie inny poziom, jakość i siła rażenia. Poza niepowtarzalnym klimatem, który jest mi szczególnie bliski, mamy tu świetne brzmienie perkusji - surowe, organiczne. Może dla niektórych dalekie od perfekcji, ale dla mnie jest w punkt. No i kolejna sprawa to gitary. Piastyrowi należy się ogromny szacun za riffy i melodie, jakie tu powymyślał. To, co dzieje się w "Wilczym Tańcu" czy też riff przewodni tytułowego "Wrath", to jakaś pierdolona magia. Co ja się będę tu produkował. "Wrath" to kawał diabelnie dobrego black metalu i za cholerę nie jestem w stanie się tu do niczego przyczepić, a wręcz muszę zachwalać Szarego Wilka za wyczucie tej muzyki, za chęć odgrzebywania przeszłości i przekuwania jej na nowo, wszczepiania w czas obecny. Nie wyobrażam sobie, żeby jakikolwiek entuzjasta tej sztuki przeszedł obok niniejszej płyty obojętnie. Nie ma takiej opcji!

A band from the city where I grew up - Ostrołęka. Finally with a full album and, like the demo, under the sign of Putrid Cult. I waited impatiently for this one, and the songs previously available on the internet only strenghtened my appetite. The album consists of five compositions that perfectly transfer the aesthetics and the spirit of black metal of our scene of the 90s into the present time. After the first listening session, I was sitting with my mouth mentally open. Since the times of the well-known Hellveto, Ostrołęka haven't had such a band, a band that could realistically rise to the top of the Polish underground scene. Maybe their demo didn't echo enough, but what is happening on this release is a completely different level, quality and impact. In addition to the unique atmosphere that is particularly close to my taste, we have a great drum sound - raw, organic. Maybe far from perfect for some, but for me it is up to the point. And the guitars are another thing. Piastyr deserves a great deal of respect for the riffs and melodies he made up here. What's going on in "The Wolf's Dance" or in the main riff of the title "Wrath" is some fucking magic. Well, what can I say more? "Wrath" is a piece of devilishly good black metal and, for the hell, I am not able to complain about anything here. I just praise Szary Wilk for their sense of this music, for the desire to dig up the past and remake it, implant it into the present time. I can't imagine that any enthusiast of this art would pass by this album indifferently. No way!

Upon the Altar - Absid ad Ordine Luminis (Putrid Cult 2021)

Rok 2021 witam kilkoma słowami na temat debiutanckiego krążka black/death metalowego Upon the Altar. Jest to kolejny cios wydawniczy od Putrid Cult. Po ubiegłorocznym krążku DeathEpoch nie spodziewałem się, że lada moment pojawi się kolejny materiał o takiej sile rażenia. Mamy tu do czynienia z materiałem brutalnym, bezkompromisowym i diabelskim na wskroś. Nie ma tu pewnych eksperymentów, jakie miały miejsce na krążku DeathEpoch wspomnianym powyżej. Tutaj jest już czysta kanonada, przeplatana klimatycznymi zwolnieniami, trwająca od początku po sam koniec płyty. To, co wyczynia tutaj sekcja rytmiczna to totalne zniszczenie! Gitary rzężą i pomrukują, a nad całością unosi się opętańczy wokal. "Absid ad Ordine Luminis" to chyba najlepszy album z tych pędzących przed siebie i zarazem walcowatych, jakie dane mi było słyszeć. Zespoły grające w tej stylistyce często mają tendencję przeginania w którąś stronę i płyta robi się jednostajna i do bólu przewidywalna. Tutaj tak nie jest i za to należy się ogromny plus. Powstał naprawdę dobry debiut, z konkretnym kopem, dobrym pomysłem na siebie i świetnymi, porywającymi kompozycjami. Tak można zaczynać kolejny płytowy rok!

I welcome 2021 with a few words about the debut of black/death metal act Upon the Altar. This is another publishing blow from Putrid Cult. After last year's DeathEpoch album, I didn't expect that a material with such power and impact will appear so soon. We are dealing here with brutal, uncompromising and thoroughly devilish record. There are no experiments here that took place on the DeathEpoch album mentioned above. Here we have a pure cannonade, mixed with atmospheric slowdowns, lasting from the beginning to the very end of the album. What the rhythm section does here is a total destruction! The guitars hoot and murmur, and a demonic vocal hovers over the whole thing. "Absid ad Ordine Luminis" is probably the best album from those rushing ahead and so heavy at the same time that I have ever heard. The balance of heaviness and speed is intricately laid out here, everything works like a clockwork. The right dose of these elements gave an amazing effect, and there is no exaggeration in either direction. Bands playing in this style often tend to bend too much in one direction and the album becomes boring and painfully predictable. This is not the case here and it deserves a huge plus. A really good debut, with a concrete kick-in-the-ass, with the specific idea for themselves and great, thrilling compositions. This is how you can start another record year!

Grimcult - Revelations of Sinister Flame (Putrid Cult 2020)

To, że Morgul ma nosa do dobrych zespołów i projektów, to wiadome nie od dziś. Zwłaszcza w obrębie black metalu. Tutaj mamy następny tego przykład. Przyznać muszę, że to już któraś z kolei płyta, która w tym roku pozytywnie mnie zaskakuje swym przeogromnym wyczuciem tego gatunku i jego korzeni. Osoba stojąca za przedstawianym Grimcult to dobrze znany z Odour of Death R. Hate, który przybiera tu pseudonim Nobody. Na trwającym 25 minut "Revelations of Sinister Flame" stworzył black metal z konkretnym odniesieniem do wczesnych dokonań naszej sceny (spod znaku Veles, Graveland, starego North), ale też fińskiej i zespołów pokroju Horny czy Satanic Warmaster. Jednym słowem kult przeszłości stworzony ze smakiem i świadomością, a przede wszystkim umiejętnością odtworzenia tamtego klimatu i estetyki. Nie każdy to potrafi i myślę, że coś takiego świadczy o klasie artysty i oddaniu ulubionej muzyce. Jest to zawsze wynik przeogromnej pasji w temacie. Materiał jest bardzo klimatyczny, zawierający dobrze wplecione klawisze, które dobrze wykorzystane robią kawał dobrej roboty. Do tego ta okładka autorstwa Lorda. K... W punkt! Taką wisienką na torcie jest zaśpiewany po polsku kawałek "Przymierze", którego tekst od razu się zapamiętuje, a przynajmniej tę najważniejszą jego część. Posłuchacie, to będziecie wiedzieli, o czym mówię. Mam nadzieję, ze R. Hate nie popełnił tu jednorazowego strzału i dalej będzie atakował z Grimcult. I must admit that this is another album that positively surprises me this year with its enormous sense of this genre and its roots. The person behind the presented Grimcult is R. Hate well-known from Odour of Death, who takes the nickname Nobody here. On the 25-minute "Revelations of Sinister Flame" he created black metal with a specific reference to the early achievements of our scene (under the sign of Veles, Graveland, old North), but also Finnish and bands like Horna and Satanic Warmaster. In a word, the cult of the past created with taste and awareness, and above all with the ability to recreate that atmosphere and aesthetics. Not everyone can do it and I think that something like this proves the artist's class and devotion to his favorite music. This is always the result of a huge passion in the subject. The material is very atmospheric, with keys, which when used well do a great job. Plus this cover art by Lord. K... Right on point! The icing on the cake is the song "Przymierze", sung in Polish, the text of which is immediately remembered, or at least the most important part of it is. Listen, you will know what I'm talking about. Hopefully R. Hate didn't make a one-shot here and will continue attacking with Grimcult. Meanwhile, invite the Devil into your life and throw "Revelations of Sinister Flame" into your CD players.

Fadheit - Inhaling The Trauma (Putrid Cult 2020)

W tym roku Putrid Cult wypuszcza same ciekawe lub nawet arcyciekawe materiały, a o debiucie Fadheit warto tu wspomnieć w szczególności. "Inhaling the Trauma" to chyba pierwszy w katalogu Morgula tytuł korespondujący z tzw. depresyjnym samobójczym black metalem (DSBM). Jest to też dzieło relatywnie melodyjne, mimo swego ponurego i niepokojącego klimatu. A jak dobrze wiecie, takich płyt nie ma w katalogu Putrid Cult tak wiele. Cieszy zatem fakt, że i na taki album znalazło się miejsce. "Inhaling the Trauma" to black metal spod znaku takich zespołów jak Martwa Aura, Medico Peste, Mgła, ale w bardziej melodyjnej odsłonie (chociaż nie jestem do końca przekonany, czy to trafne określenie), odsłonie przepełnionej również nostalgią i melancholią. Z jednej strony mamy bardzo mocne teksty o przygnębiającym, refleksyjnym charakterze, zanurzone po uszy w depresyjnej tematyce, a z drugiej chwytliwe riffy i zapadające w pamięć gitarowe pasaże. Ma to również na swój sposób nutę przebojowości, a nawet patosu, z jakim zetknąłem się już przy płytach chociażby Batushki. Jakby tego było mało, są tu też subtelne echa polskiego black metalu sprzed dwóch dekad. Gdzieś tam słychać na przykład Sacrilegium. Jednym słowem - dostaliśmy dzieło kompleksowe, przepełnione masą pomysłów połączonych z niebagatelną atmosferą. Słucham tej płyty z przerwami już od dwóch tygodni i nie mam dość. W swojej niszy jest to jedno z najlepszych wydawnictw tego roku i pretendent do najlepszego debiutu. Gorąco polecam!

"Inhaling the Trauma" is probably the first title in Morgul's catalogue corresponding to the so-called depressive suicidal black metal (DSBM). It is also a relatively melodic work, despite its gloomy and disturbing atmosphere. And as you well know, there are not so many such albums in the Putrid Cult catalogue. Therefore, it's nice that there is a place for such a recird as well. "Inhaling the Trauma" is black metal in the vein of bands such as Martwa Aura, Medico Peste, Mgła, but in a more melodic version (although I'm not entirely sure if this is an accurate term), version also filled with nostalgia and melancholy. On the one hand, we have very strong lyrics with a depressing, reflective character, fulfilled with this kind of emotions, and on the other hand, catchy riffs and memorable guitar passages. It also has, in its own way, a hint of hitness, and even pathos, both of which I have already encountered on, for example, Batushka's releases. As if that was not enough, there are also subtle echoes of Polish black metal from two decades ago. Somewhere there you can hear Sacrilegium, for example. In a word, we got a comprehensive work, full of ideas combined with a considerable atmosphere. I've been listening to this album on and off for two weeks now and I can't get enough. In its niche, it is one of the best releases of the year and a contender for the best debut. I highly recommend it to you!

DeathEpoch - Abysmal Invocation (Putrid Cult 2020)

Takiej płyty, mieszanki gatunków i stylów jeszcze nie było! Przynajmniej ja nie znam podobnego krążka. Ale zacznijmy od początku. DeathEpoch to wspólny projekt dowodzącego wytwórnią Putrid Cult Morgula, oraz Lorda K. (Nekkrofukk, Goathorne, Sacrificulus...). Pierwszy zajął się partiami gitar (niby tyle lat przerwy od gry na instrumencie, a poradził sobie świetnie) i basu, natomiast drugi zasiadł za garami i stanął za mikrofonem. Panowie pokusili się o bardzo nieszablonowy projekt łącząc ze sobą black/death/war metalową kanonadę, smoliste brzmienie, mocarne riffy i wokalne bluźnierstwo, dzikość ze sporą ilością ambientu oraz elektroniki. Wszystko to przeplata się ze sobą przez całą długość albumu. To trochę tak, jakby spotkały się ze sobą Mysticum, Archgoat, Beherit, Mz. 412 i, nie wiem, Brighter Death Now. Przyznajcie, że synteza mocno oryginalna, odważna, ale efekt powala! Powstał album, który ma zadatki na dzieło nie tylko kultowe, ale i przełomowe dla sceny undergroundowej. Odważny projekt, który moim zdaniem nie wziął jeńców. Płyta bardzo ekstremalna, ale wciągającą, kipiąca złożonością i pomysłami. Co tu dużo mówić, w tej estetyce nie pojawiło się do tej pory nic tak świeżego. Na odchodnym warto dodać, że na płytce pojawiły się też covery Sodom i Acheron ("Bombenhagel" i "Ave Satanas"), a gościnnie udzielili się Vincent Crowley, Mark of the Beast oraz Kris Stanley. Istna wisienka na torcie całego tego misterium zniszczenia! Bierzcie ten album w ciemno!

DeathEpoch is a joint project of the leader of the Putrid Cult label - Morgul, and Lord K. (Nekkrofukk, Goathorne, Sacrificulus ...). The first is resonsible for the guitar parts (supposedly so many years of break from playing the instrument, but he did great) and bass, while the second sat behind the drums and stood behind the microphone. The gentlemen attempted a very unconventional project combining black/death/war metal cannonade, tarry sound, powerful riffs and vocal blasphemy, wildness with a lot of ambient and electronics. All of this is mixed throughout the whole album. It's a bit as if Mysticum, Archgoat, Beherit, Mz. 412 and, I don't know, Brighter Death Now we all joined together. Admit that the synthesis is very original, bold, but the effect is stunning! An album was created that has the predispositions to achieve not only a cult status, but also to be a groundbreaking record for the underground scene. A bold project that, in my opinion, did not take prisoners. A very extreme album, but addictive, full of complexity and ideas. What can I say, nothing so fresh has appeared in this aesthetic so far. On leaving, it is worth adding that the CD also featured covers of Sodom and Acheron ("Bombenhagel" and "Ave Satanas"), and Vincent Crowley, Mark of the Beast and Kris Stanley as guests. A perfect sum-up of all this mystery of destruction! Grab this album without any hesitation!

Atonement - Genesis of Blasphemy (Putrid Cult 2020)

Jeden z najciekawszych debiutów tego roku. Wreszcie, po dwóch latach istnienia, Atonement wydaje swoje pierwsze demo. Materiał ma niespełna trzynaście minut, ale już tyle wystarcza, aby pokazać, jaki potencjał drzemie w tym zespole. Dostajemy tu mroczny, bardzo klimatyczny, miejscami rytualny, miejscami szaleńczy Black/Death Metal z naleciałościami Doom. Jakby spotkało się ze sobą Vital Remains, Doombringer oraz stary Samael. W niektórych aspektach Atonement ma również wspólne mianowniki z inną naszą grupą, mianowicie Nekkrofukk, chociaż Panowie idą bardziej w kierunku Death Metalu w miejscach, w których zespół Lorda K. ewidentnie wybiera ścieżkę black metalową. No i jest tu mniej surowe brzmienie. To energiczny, wciągający materiał, którego słucha się jednym tchem i który autentycznie wciąga. Tak, ma w sobie to coś. Jest w tym zarówno oldschool, jak i ten potrzebny powiew czegoś nowego, mimo wciąż tej samej formuły. Boli mnie trochę fakt, że "Genesis of Blasphemy" pojawiło się tylko na kasecie, i tylko w 70 egzemplarzach. To demo prosi się o CD lub chociaż siedmiocalowy winyl. Ze swojej strony bardzo Atonement polecam, to tegoroczny mus na liście debiutów (chociaż członkowie zespołu to już starzy wyjadacze).

One of the most interesting debuts of this year. Finally, after two years of existence, Atonement releases their first demo. The material has less than thirteen minutes, but it is enough to show what potential lies in this band. We get here dark, very atmospheric, sometimes ritual, sometimes crazy Black/Death Metal with Doom influences. As if Vital Remains, Doombringer and old Samael met in one place. In some aspects Atonement also has something in common with other Polish group, namely Nekkrofukk, although the gentlemen are moving more towards Death Metal in places where Lord K.'s band clearly chooses the Black Metal path. And here there's less raw sound. It's energetic, addictive material that you listen to in one go and that draws you attention immediately. Yes, it has "that thing". There is both oldschool and this necessary breeze of something new, despite the same formula. It hurts me a bit that "Genesis of Blasphemy" appeared only on tape, and only in 70 copies. This demo is asking for a CD issue or least 7-inch vinyl. Personally, I highly recommend Atonement, this is this year's must when it comes to debut stuff (although the band members are not new on the scene).

Old Skull - Death Rattle (Putrid Cult 2020)

Old Skull to oldschool, death metalowy, rzecz jasna. Stary, nawiązujący do czasów tape tradingu i klasyki gatunku, ale jakiś taki świeży w tej swojej starości. Na EPce "Death Rattle" jest Szwecja, jest Wielka Brytania spod znaku Bolt Thrower, a i Holandia Asphyxem pachnąca. Wszystko podane w kipiącej dynamiką formie. A i skojarzenia z Cannibal Corpse też mam, ale to bardziej przez trupią okładkę przyozdobioną jeszcze bebechami. Jest gęsto, ciężko, ale klarownie, tutaj brudów brzmieniowych zbytnio nie uświadczycie, tu nie to jest celem, mimo podziemnego charakteru grupy, jak i samego wydawnictwa. Panowie parcia na tzw. szkło nie mają, rzeźbią z pasją swoją ulubioną muzę i mają wywalone na to, co pomyślą inni. Jeżeli interesuje kogoś czysty Death Metal bez zbędnych udziwnień, to trafił pod właściwy adres. To jest generalnie jedna z postaci, w jakiej pojawia się esencja tego stylu grania. "Death Rattle" śmiało można ocenić jako Metal Śmierci wręcz podręcznikowy. Dziewiętnaście minut walca, przy którym przypominają się co lepsze materiały w temacie, a i przy okazji te bardziej bujające, jak późniejsze tytuły Entombed czy Dismember. Mogę z czystym sumieniem polecić.

Old Skull is simply oldschool, death metal of course. Old, referring to the times of tape trading and the classics of the genre, but somehow fresh in its old style. On the "Death Rattle" EP you can find Sweden, there is Great Britain under the sign of Bolt Thrower, and the Netherlands with Asphyx smell. Everything served in a dynamic form. And I also have associations with Cannibal Corpse, but it's more because of the cadaveric cover decorated with gutters as well. It is densely, heavily, but clearly, here you will not hear the dirt of sound, it is not the goal here, despite the underground character of the group and the release itself. These gentlemen are not searching for fame or so, they play their favorite music with passion and don't give a damn about what others think. If someone is interested in pure Death Metal without any unnecessary oddities, then he/she has come to the right address. This is generally one of the forms in which the essence of this style can be presented. "Death Rattle" can easily be described as Death Metal textbook example. Nineteen minutes of bulldozer, which reminds of the best materials in the subject, and by the way the more rocking ones, like the later titles from Entombed or Dismember. I can recommend it with a clear conscience.
