Weresoul - S/T (Malignant Voices 2020)

Na tę płytę czekałem od kiedy tylko dotarły do mnie informacje, że pojawi się sumptem Malignant Voices. Za Weresoul stoi nie kto inny, jak znany z przede wszystkim z Sauron i Narrenwind Artur "Evil" Zagoździński. To już świadectwo nie tylko jakości, ale i tego, że nie będzie to płyta prosta, która łechta trendy i szuka jak największego poklasku. O nie, tu będzie się działo, a i nie będzie to dzieło płytkie ani oczywiste! "Weresoul" to przede wszystkim płyta, za którą stoi konkretny koncept. W ciągu trzydziestu trzech minut materiału dostajemy sześć historii utrzymanych w konwencji horroru, a zespolonych postacią tytułowego Weresoul - demonicznego pożeracza grzesznych dusz. Każda z opowiedzianych tu historii została w booklecie opatrzona oddzielną grafiką (autorstwa Kima Holma, również odpowiedzialnego za okładkę i co tylko w warstwie graficznej - poza logiem) i stosownym wstępem. Ależ w tym momencie kłania się tutaj twórczość Kinga Diamonda, która to z pewnością zainspirowała twórców albumu, bo jest to też po części dzieło Marcina "Warmwooda" Stępnia. Jest on nie tylko odpowiedzialny za wokale na płycie (swoją drogą bardzo zróżnicowane, zależnie od klimatu kompozycji), ale również dorzucił swoje trzy grosze do tekstów. Co do samej muzyki, prym wiodą tu partie gitar. Czasem wygrywające fajne, zapadające w pamięć motywy, czasem nieco połamane, wielowarstwowe i zakręcone, tak jak same kompozycje (siłą rzeczy kłania mi się tutaj czasem Narrenwind, zwłaszcza z pierwszej płyty). Każdy z utworów ubogacony jest odpowiednim intrem i tłami dźwiękowymi, które budują nam atmosferę i klimat krążka. Dodając do tego wokale i historie kryjące się za każdym z tekstów, dostajemy bardzo ciekawe i ambitne dzieło z oryginalnym pomysłem. I serio, Weresoul nie da się zaszufladkować do jednego konkretnego stylu, to po prostu kawał dobrego Metalu czy po prostu kawał świetnej, dojrzałej muzyki. Maluje nam nie tylko kompleksowy, dźwiękowy pejzaż nasycony mrokiem, niepokojem i lekka nutką dreszczyku, ale i sporo emocji, dzięki którym album nabiera jeszcze większej wartości. Czy będzie to moja płyta roku? Są na to spore szanse.

I've been waiting for this material ever since I received information that it would be issued by Malignant Voices. Behind Weresoul is none other than Arthur "Evil" Zagoździński, known primarily from Sauron and Narrenwind. This is a testimony not only of quality, but also of the fact that it will not be a simple album, which tickles trends and looks for the applause. Oh no, what will happen here will not be simple or obvious! "Weresoul" is above all an album behind which there is a specific concept. Within thirty-three minutes of material we get six stories kept in the convention of horror, and bound by the character of the title Weresoul - a demonic devourer of sinful souls. Each of the stories told here was provided with separate graphics in the booklet (by Kim Holm, also responsible for the cover and whatever in the graphic layer - except for the logo) and an appropriate introduction. At this point King Diamond's works bows here, which certainly inspired the album's creators, because it is also partly the work of Marcin "Warmwood" Stępień. He is not only responsible for the vocals on the album (by the way very different, depending on the climate of the composition), but he also added a bit from himself to the lyrics. As for the music itself, the guitar parts lead the way here. Sometimes plying cool, memorable riffs, sometimes a bit broken, multi-layered and twisted, just like the compositions themselves (Narrenwind sometimes bows here, especially the first album). Each of the songs is enriched with an appropriate intro and background motives that build the atmosphere and climate of the records. Adding the vocals and stories behind each of the lyrics, we get a very interesting and ambitious work with an original concept. And seriously, Weresoul can't be thrown into one particular style, it's just a piece of good Metal or just a piece of great, mature music. It paints us not only a comprehensive, audio landscape filled with darkness, anxiety and a slight note of thrill, but also a lot of emotions, thanks to which the album gains even more value. Will it be my album of the year? There is a serious chance for that.

Hekatomb - Crone Time Comes. This Life Comes To An End (Self-released 2020)

Hekatomb to nowy black metalowy projekt ze Szczecina, parający się surową, atmosferyczną formą tej sztuki. "Crone Time Comes" to brzmienia przede wszystkim sceny przełomu lat dziewięćdziesiątych i dwutysięcznych. Mam tu na myśli głównie Mayhem, Gorgoroth, fińskie Behexen czy Musta Surma. Owo diabelstwo jest tu podane w swoistej, lekko rytualnej, posępnej otoczce, jest sporo fajnych riffów zbudowanych na patentach znanych chociażby z "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", słychać to już od pierwszego utworu i nie pomyli się tego z niczym innym. Widać, że płytę stworzono z pasji do tematu i trzyma się ona tych szlachetnych wzorców przez całą swoją długość, korzystając ze sporego wachlarza urozmaiceń klimatu, aby nie wyczerpać formy. Są fajne zwolnienia, lekko melodyjne partie gitar, odrobina klawiszy w tle, miejscami jakby recytowane partie wokalne. W kwestii tego, co dzieje się na płycie stricte względem budowanej tu atmosfery, to można przywołać jeszcze takie zespoły jak Black Altar, Watain, Horna, Acherontas, Aethyrick itd. Generalnie jest to ta rytualna otoczka, wrażenie jakiegoś misterium, które okala mrok, kadzidła, świece i ponure inkantacje. Naprawdę nieźle to współgra z muzyką i daje finalnie bardzo ciekawy efekt. Po prostu dobrze się tego słucha. To przemyślana i dojrzała płyta, której na dobrą sprawę niczego nie brakuje. Jak na początek, to wróży bardzo dobrze. Może i "Crone Time Comes" nie wybija się wśród jej podobnych, nie ma tu niczego, czego już bym gdzieś nie słyszał (cholernie trudno jest obecnie znaleźć coś, co byłoby jakoś szczególnie mocno oryginalne, taka prawda), ale to nie stanowi o tym, że jest słaba. Mamy tu bowiem do czynienia z solidnym w swojej niszy dziełem, które warte jest tego, by je Wam z czystym sumieniem polecić.

Hekatomb is a new Black Metal project from Szczecin (Poland) performing raw, atmospheric form of this art. "Crone Time Comes" are sounds primarily of the turn of the 90s/2000s scene. I mean mainly Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Finnish Behexen or Musta Surma. This hellish stuff is given here in a peculiar, slightly ritual, gloomy incarnation, there are a lot of cool riffs built on patents known from "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", this can be heard from the first song and you can't confuse it with anything else. You can see that the album has been created out of passion for the subject and sticks to these noble patterns throughout its entire length, using a wide range of climate variations not to exhaust the form. There are nice slower parts, varied guitar lines, a bit of keys in the background, vocal parts recited in some places. In terms of what is happening on the album, strictly in relation to the atmosphere built here, you can also recall such bands as Black Altar, Watain, Horna, Acherontas, Aethyrick, etc. Generally it is this ritual feel, the impression of some mystery surrounded by darkness, candles and grim incantations. It really goes well with the music and finally gives a very interesting effect. It gives a good listening. This is a well thought-out and mature album, which basically misses nothing. As for the beginning, it is remarkable. Maybe "Crone Time Comes" does not stand out among other similar releases, there is nothing here that I would not hear somewhere else (it's damn difficult now to find something that would be particularly original, this is true), but that does not mean that the record is weak. We are dealing here with a work that is solid in its niche and is worth recommending to you with a clear conscience.

Mordhell - Graveyard Fuck (Pagan Records 2020)

Dziewięć długich lat (czy nawet dziesięć) minęło od ostatniego pełnego albumu Mordhell. Panowie wracają z nową płytą  w barwach Pagan Records i jest totalna rozpierducha! Zespół okrzepł już w swoim brudnym, bluźnierczym i bezkompromisowym stylu i zaserwował nam swój najlepszy jak dotąd album. Cały czas bym odpalał ponownie, wciąga cholernik. Wiadomo, że ich muza jest bardzo prostolinijna i niespecjalnie wyszukana, ale taka ma właśnie być. Tutaj diabeł nie tkwi w szczegółach, a w prostocie i dobrych riffach. To absolutnie nieokrzesany oldschoolowy Black Metal podkuty jakby punkową chwytliwością, coś totalnie w stylu podobnym do Carpathian Forest czy miejscami Gorgoroth, tylko bardziej surowo i z większym kopem w zad. W sumie Mordhell jest takim naszym odpowiednikiem pierwszego z wymienionych wyżej zespołów, tyle że lepszym. Przynajmniej ja tak uważam, a wraz z "Graveyard Fuck" nagrali własne "Fuck You All". Do tego słychać w tym to szybsze oblicze Hellhammer/ Celtic Frost. Zatem czego chcieć więcej? Jak dla mnie niczego! Tak trzymać!

Samo wydanie płyty też zasługuje na wspomnienie, bo zacnie współgra z zawartością i w punkt odzwierciedla to, co na niej dostajemy. No i jeszcze na koniec, "Graveyard Fuck" to nie jest żadne objawienie dla sceny, nikt tu nie sili się na odkrywanie koła na nowo czy inne śmieszne zabiegi, żeby się ludziskom ta muzyka podobała. Mordhell wygrywa tu szczerością i oddaniem swojemu stylowi i za to szacun. Polecam każdemu, komu ta metalowa prostota nie straszna i lubi stare dobre granie! Jeżeli to nie Twoje klimaty, to odpadniesz już na początku.Tyle w temacie! Dla mnie sztos!

Nine long (or even ten) years have passed since the last full-length Mordhell ​​album. Gentlemen are coming back with a new album via Pagan Records and it is a total destruction! The band has already solidified in their dirty, blasphemous and uncompromising style and served us their best album so far. I would like to play it again and again, it is so damn good. It is known that their music is very straightforward and not particularly sophisticated, but it should be that way. Here the devil is not in the details, but in simplicity and good riffs. This is absolutely uncouth oldschool Black Metal filled with some sort of punk catchiness, something totally similar to the style of Carpathian Forest or even Gorgoroth, only more raw and with a larger kick in the butt. All in all, Mordhell ​​is our equivalent of the first of the bands mentioned above, only better. At least that's what I think, and with "Graveyard Fuck" they recorded their own "Fuck You All". What's more, you can hear the faster face of Hellhammer/ Celtic Frost here. So is there anything more to add? Nothing for me! Keep it up!

The very release of the album also deserves a mention, because it perfectly harmonizes with the content and in point reflects what we get on it. And finally, "Graveyard Fuck" is not anything new to the scene, no one here is trying to reinvent the wheel or add any other funny stuff, so that people may like this music. Mordhell ​​wins here with honesty and devotion to their style and for that they deserve respect. I recommend it to anyone who is not afraid of metal simplicity and likes good old stuff! If this is not your cup of tea, then you will fall out at the beginning. That's all! Killer album!

Impure Declaration - Mind Upheaval, Unclear Signs (Old Temple 2019)

Gdzieś na dalekim, górskim odludziu jest opuszczony kościół. Zewsząd okala go las. Budynek od wieków stoi pusty i popada w ruinę. Już dawno nie ma nic wspólnego z niegdysiejszą "świętością". Ale czy istotnie jest pusty, czy żyją w nim tylko wiatr i natura? Podobno tak. Jednak gdy zapada noc, budowlę okala złowrogi cień. Ludzie z okolicy mawiają, że lęgnie się tam zło, nienazwana groźba. Gdy nadchodzi pełnia, podobno dzieją się tam przerażające rzeczy. Ciemność jest wtedy nieprzenikniona, przytłaczająca, a górski wiatr niesie ze sobą krzyki. Czy ludzi, czy bestii - nikt nie potrafi powiedzieć. Był kiedyś śmiałek, który się tam zapuścił, ale już nigdy potem go nie widziano. Światło dnia odsłoniło wtedy ślady krwi i znaki jakiegoś przerażającego rytuału. Miejsce odcięto od ludzkich oczu, zamknięto, zabito deskami, wejście zawalono. Nastała zmowa milczenia. Nikt nigdy nie potrafił wyjaśnić tego, co się tam działo, nikt nie chciał więcej wspominać przeklętego kościoła. Czas zrodził zapomnienie, acz groza pozostała... Na zawsze.

Tak, "Mind Upheaval, Unclear Signs" mógłby być ścieżką dźwiękową do podobnej historii. Wraz ze swoją duszną, złowrogą atmosferą, smolistym brzmieniem i niepokojącymi kompozycjami snuje historię grozy, a jego atmosfera jest wyjątkowa. Jeżeli szukacie Death/Doom Metalu, który przyprawi was o dreszcze, którego dźwięki nacechowane są iście diabelską aurą, to nie mogliście lepiej trafić!

When the fullmoon comes, scary things are said to happen there. The darkness is then impenetrable, overwhelming, and the mountain wind carries screams. Whether it's people or beasts - no one can say. There was once a daredevil who went there, but he has never been seen again. The light of day exposed bloodstains and signs of some terrifying ritual. The place was cut off from human eyes, closed, boarded up, the entrance collapsed. There was a conspiracy of silence. No one could ever explain what was going on there, no one wanted to remember the cursed church again. Time has created oblivion, but the terror remained... Forever.

Yes, "Mind Upheaval, Unclear Signs" could be a soundtrack for a similar story. Along with its stuffy, sinister atmosphere, tarry sound and disturbing compositions, it tells a horror story, and its atmosphere is unique. If you are looking for Death/Doom Metal that will give you a shiver, which sounds have a devilish aura, you couldn't have found a better one!

Rotting Kingdom - A Deeper Shade of Sorrow (Godz Ov War Productions 2020)

Po trzech latach przerwy i EPce, Rotting Kingdom powraca, serwując nam swój pierwszy pełny album. I muszę otwarcie powiedzieć, że przeskoczył ich pierwszy materiał o głowę, a było to już dzieło bardzo dobre. Zespół już wie, jaką drogą chce kroczyć i szlifuje tu swój unikalny styl, to kawał dojrzałej i świadomej muzyki. 

To, co znajdziecie na "A Deeper Shade of Sorrow" to oryginalna wypadkowa starego Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Cemetary, Anathemy, Amorphis z czasów "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" oraz Tribulation z okresu "The Formulas of Death". Mieszają się tu cechy charakterystyczne dla brytyjskiej i szwedzkiej sceny. Zatem mamy tu ciekawe melodie, odrobinę przebojowości, growl w warstwie wokalnej, sporo ciężaru (więcej niż na EPce), ale i czasem nastrojowy, gotycki klimat, który za moment ustępuje konkretnemu łojeniu. Jest to bogaty, wielowarstwowy album, który nie daje się zaszufladkować i ucieka od schematów. Ta płyta momentalnie odkrywa przed słuchaczem całą paletę swych mrocznych barw, ale mimo to nie jest krążkiem na jeden czy parę odsłuchów, a na znacznie więcej. Dzieje się tu mnóstwo ciekawych rzeczy, które mają zadatki na ciągłe odkrywanie ich przez słuchacza i samo to świadczy już mocno o jakości "A Deeper Shade of Sorrow". Panowie z Rotting Kingdom nagrali album, który nie jest ani jednoznacznie doom, ani death metalowy, nie jest też do końca okrzepłą już klasyczną hybrydą obu tych gatunków. Moim zdaniem to coś znacznie więcej. Naprawdę warto się z tą płytą zapoznać i zostać przy niej na dłużej.

After three years of break and an EP, Rotting Kingdom is back, serving us its first full-length album. And I must say openly that their first material was already a very good work, but this one beats it. The band already knows which way it wants to go and forges its unique style, here we have a piece of mature and conscious music. 

What you will find on "A Deeper Shade of Sorrow" is the original mixture of old Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Cemetary, Anathema, Amorphis from the time of "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" and Tribulation from the period of "The Formulas of Death". Characteristic features of the British and Swedish scene are being joined here. So here we have interesting melodies, a bit of hit stuff, growl in the vocal layer, a lot of heaviness (more than on EP), but also sometimes a moody, gothic atmosphere, which in a moment transforms into fast fierce parts. It is a rich, multi-layered album that cannot be put into one genre and escapes the possible schemes. This album immediately reveals the entire palette of its dark colors to the listener, but it is not a record for one or several listenings, but for much more. There are a lot of interesting things happening here that can be constantly discovered by the listener and this only strongly testifies the quality of "A Deeper Shade of Sorrow". The gentlemen from Rotting Kingdom recorded an album that is neither unequivocally doom, nor death metal, nor is it a solid classic hybrid of both genres. In my opinion, it is much more than that. It's really worth checking this material and staying with it for some serious amount of time.

Iku-Turso - Pakana (Wolfspell Records 2020)

Ostatnio fińska scena black metalowa nie przestaje mnie pozytywnie zaskakiwać. Co chwila natrafiam na jakiś nowy album, przy którym zostaję na dłużej lub który w jakiś sposób robi na mnie wrażenie. Ostatnio był to chociażby Werwolf, Warmoon Lord, Faustian Pact, Goats of Doom (o tych dwóch będę jeszcze Wam pisał), a teraz Iku-Turso. Przyznam, że ich poprzedni krążek (a konkretnie EP) "Storm Over Isengard" niezbyt mnie zaciekawił i przeszedł u mnie bez echa, niczego z niego nie zapamiętałem. Kolejny pełny album, omawiany tutaj "Pakana", to już klasa sama w sobie! Niesamowity skok jakościowy i kompozycyjny. Przynajmniej ja mam takie wrażenie. Płyta jest może odrobinę bardziej pogańska niż poprzednie materiały, bardziej "leśna", ale to tylko działa na jej plus. Usłyszycie tu wpływy starych płyt Satyricon (niektóre melodie i chóry), Limbonic Art, Emperor (klawisze), Ulver (elementy folkowe) czy Burzum lub Windir (brzmienie gitar i riffy). Pomimo tych norweskich naleciałości płyta jest wciąż typowo fińskim dziełem, ma ten unikalnych klimat i złowieszczość, jaką charakteryzują się tamtejsze zespoły. To jest ten sam poziom rozpoznawalności, jaki towarzyszy Satanic Warmaster, Thy Serpent, Moonsorrow czy Hornie. "Pakana" wprowadza nas w świat mroku, melancholii, fińskiej natury, czuje się w niej atmosferę tamtejszych lasów i jezior, szamaństwa i mistycyzmu. Wszystko to wrzucone jest w lekko surowe brzmienie i rozbudowane, przestrzenne utwory. Ta płyta to bardzo duży krok dla zespołu i ma szansę przenieść ich w grono najlepszych ekip ich sceny. Mi album spodobał się na tyle, że z pewnością wyląduje w mojej pierwszej piątce najlepszych wydawnictw tego roku. Ogromny szacunek dla Iku-Turso i wydawcy, czyli naszego rodzimego Wolfspell Records!

Recently, the Finnish black metal scene does not stop to surprise me positively. Every now and then I come across a new album with which I stay for longer or which somehow impresses me. Recently it was Werwolf, Warmoon Lord, Faustian Pact, Goats of Doom (about these two I still need to write about), and now Iku-Turso. I admit that their previous album (EP, to be precise) "Storm Over Isengard" did not interest me very much and went unnoticed in my case, I did not remember anything from it. The next full album, discussed here - "Pakana", is already a class in itself! An amazing qualitative and compositional leap. At least I have such an impression. The album is maybe a little more pagan than the previous materials, more "forest-like", but this only works in favour of it. Here you will hear influences of old Satyricon records (some melodies and choirs), Limbonic Art, Emperor (keyboards), Ulver (folk elements), Burzum or Windir (guitars and riffs). Despite these Norwegian influences, the album is still a typical Finnish stuff, it has this unique atmosphere and ominous character that can be found only among Finnish bands. This is the same level of recognition that accompanies Satanic Warmaster, Thy Serpent, Moonsorrow or Horna. "Pakana" introduces us to the world of darkness, melancholy, Finnish nature, you can feel the atmosphere of the local forests and lakes, shamanism and mysticism. All this is thrown into a slightly raw sound and extensive, spatial compositions. This album is a very big step for the band and has a chance to move them to the group of the best acts of their scene. I like the album so much that it will definitely land among my top five best releases of this year. Huge respect for Iku-Turso and the publisher - our Polish Wolfspell Records!

Pathogen - Obscure Deathworship (Old Temple 2019)

Przyznam się, że Pathogen poznaję wraz z tą płytą. Nigdy wcześniej o nich nie słyszałem, mimo faktu, że siedzą w katalogu Old Temple już od 2012 roku, czyli od ich trzeciej płyty "Forged in the Crucible of Death". I żałuję, że nie usłyszałem ich wcześniej. To, co dzieje się na "Obscure Deathworship" to czyste złoto. Nie spodziewałem się, że jakaś podziemna ekipa z Filipin wysmaży taki kapitalny kawał Death Metalu (a może bardziej Death/Thrashu, bo i wpływów tego drugiego nie da się momentami nie zauważyć). Takiego, który będzie pięknym ukłonem w stosunku do szlachetnych i kultowych już materiałów, a jednocześnie dobrze - jak na podziemne możliwości - wyprodukowanym. "Obscure Deathworship" przynosi skojarzenia z demami wielkiego Nihilst czy naszego rodzimego Vader, tylko w pozbawionej tej demówkowej chropowatości formie. Brzmienie jest mocne i soczyste, przez co słucha się tego wyśmienicie. Te wszystkie mocarne, a jednocześnie chwytliwe riffy, jakie znajdują się na tym krążku, mają szansę wybrzmieć i pokazać się słuchaczowi w pełnej krasie. A jest tu czego słuchać i z czego wybierać. Płyta wciąga w swą czeluść już z pierwszym odsłuchem i już nie wypuszcza. Gdybym poznał ten krążek w ubiegłym roku, to z pewnością bym go wyróżnił, bo jakoś nic z ubiegłorocznych nowości w temacie nie zostało ze mną na dłużej (no może poza Morbid Stench), a "Obscure Deathworship" z pewnością byłby tu wyjątkiem. Musicie tej płytki posłuchać! Potężny oldschoolowy Death Metal pełną gębą!

I admit that I'm getting to know Pathogen with this album. I have never heard of them before, despite the fact that they have been in the Old Temple catalog since 2012, that is from their third album "Forged in the Crucible of Death". And I wish I had heard them before. What happens at "Obscure Deathworship" is pure gold. I didn't expect that some underground band from the Philippines will create such a great piece of Death Metal (or maybe more Death/Thrash, because the influence of the latter can't be missed). One that will be a beautiful nod to the already noble and iconic materials, and at the same time well produced for underground possibilities. "Obscure Deathworship" brings associations with the demos of the great Nihilst or our Polish Vader, only in the form without this demo-like roughness. The sound is strong and thick, which makes the listen really enjoyable. All the mighty and at the same time catchy riffs that are on this album have a chance to resound and show themselves to the listener in all their greatness. And there is something to listen to and choose from. The album draws you into its abyss with the first listening and does not let you out. If I got to know this album last year, I would definitely write about it, because somehow nothing from last year's novelties in the subject stayed with me for a long time (well, except Morbid Stench), and "Obscure Deathworship" would certainly be an exception here.
