Kat - Without Looking Back (Pure Steel Records 2019)

Najjaśniejszy punkt to oczywiście partie gitar i solówki.
Trochę to zaburza tracklistę.
Zatem ten obraz jak najbardziej idzie w parze z tytułem "Without Looking Back" i śmiało zaliczam go do udanych.
Tyle ode mnie. No, ale i podszedłem do niego nieco inaczej.

English version:

14 years after the release of Mind Cannibals, Piotr Luczyk returns with a new Kat album. It was a bit of a wait and what we got is at least satisfying, if not very good - that's my purely subjective opinion. I am well aware of reactions on "Without Looking Back" from the metal environment and criticism, that the opinions are unflattering and that the album is, to put it bluntly, lambasted. I don't know why, really. Putting aside all these animosities between musicians that have taken place in the last few/dozen years, and focusing on the art they created themselves, the latest Kat album cannot be accused of being bad, it would be nitpicking. There is an accusation that this is not Kat anymore, but a completely different creation. Well, we all know that music evolves, often it doesn't stay the same all the time, unless it is an intentional and deliberate approach. Kat under Piotr's command does not actually look back and moves away from the previous Thrash Metal, the band is heading towards the classic Heavy Metal of the 80s and early 90s, mixed with elements of classic rock. In some places even Blues, but these are only slight inserts. One could say that it is somewhat a return to the roots of Kat, the music with which this band began. It's completely not what they proposed on the previous album, or on any other. There are references to Scorpions, Accept, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, maybe even Iron Maiden. The record works well in this style, balancing between Metal and Rock, like once TSA did on their "Heavy Metal World" or Turbo on their "Smak Ciszy". We have ballad elements here (such as "Wild" or "The Promised Land", for example), hammonds referring to Purple, and on the other hand strong, energetic tracks such as "Black Night in My Chair", "Flying Fire" or "Walls of Whispers "(this is my favorite one from this album), which are already firmly embedded in Heavy Metal. The brightest points are of course guitar and solo parts. Piotr's artistry cannot be denied in this matter, negating it would be at least inappropriate. Everything is finished with a really good sound and production at a decent level.
Some of the things that didn't appeal to me here, are a bit too long compositions. Here and there are certain instrumental longueurs that would work better live than on the album. A little shorter would work better, the disc would have a better flow. Make 45 minutes from an hour and the album would not lose dynamics, it would become more condensed. And the second thing, but that's a trifle, the repetition of the word "Fire" in as many as three song titles. It disrupts the tracklist a bit. I thought to myself that at the end, only the cover of "Fight Fire with Fire" by Metallica was missing. Well, I have no other comments. As for me, the album defends itself well and I will gladly come back to it. Its otherness appeals to me and I don't mind that the Kat logo still appears here. It's just a new Kat, a new vision, new ideas. That's all. Taking this CD in my hands, I knew what to expect and I did not look at it through the prism of previous achievements, but rather as a new creation and chapter in the band's history.
Finally, I would like to mention the cover art. It has been accused of inconsistency between it and the title. Well, in the end, the figure of the executioner from the foreground turns away on his heel from the coffins from "Oddech Wymarłych Światów", the cage from "Ballady" and the tombstone from "Róże Miłości..." (all set in flames) and he goes off with his axe and beheaded heads. Therefore, this picture goes hand in hand with the title "Without Looking Back" and I confidently rank it as successful.
That'a all from me. I like the album very much, more than I expected at first. Well, I approached it a bit differently. I would be lying if I wanted to make strong critical conclusions that I have encountered in many other reviews. I highly recommend this album, it almost completely appealed to me!

Ascaris - Uncured Sickness (Baron Records 1994/ Dark Omens Production 2019)

English version:

Released on a cassette tape by Baron Records in 1994, one of two full albums of Ascaris from Wrocław, is one of many forgotten pearls of Polish Death Metal. To be honest, I don't know if I have heard this type of stuff from our scene so far, which would sound as sinister as "Uncured Sickness", their debut album. The guys managed to combine here partly the styles and atmosphere of the early Morbid Angel, Grave or Deicide albums, adding to this a large amount of great riffs, solos, generally a variety of guitar passages (especially "Cosmic Undiscovery Vacant"), and this admixture of Thrash, which can be found on the first Vader records. You can also hear a bit of technical jamming here, let's take "Sinless Desire". There are elements that have already been highly developed a year earlier by the underestimated Violent Dirge.
I am always sad that such bands as Ascaris have disappeared somewhere in the depths of history, that somehow after the release of a really solid record, with potential (well, maybe only their sound left something to be desired, but everyone knows what time it was), they went unnoticed. The positive is, however, that there are still people devoted to the case, digging up these materials and re-releasing them in various formats. I am thinking of Leszek and his Thrashing Madness, an eternal guardian Tomasz Krajewski (Pagan Records) or Michał from Dark Omens Production. It is thanks to Michał that we can hold "Uncured Sickness" in our hands again. And this time on cd. So take advantage of this opportunity, get the cd and experience the past days of the scene and what it had to offer, and Polish one, not being modest here, had a damn lot of good stuff!

Damage Case - Fuck 'n' Roll Damnation (Putrid Cult)

Oldschoolową mieszankę Venom i Motorhead. Zero kalkulacji. Alkohol, Szatan, Rock 'n' Roll i do przodu! Take it or leave it!

English version:

Damage Case - a band with already a considerable experience and a number of materials on their account. This year they are hitting the underground with their third album. And what do we get here? Well, what is usual! An oldschool mix of Venom and Motorhead. Are you familiar with bands like Gehennah, Midnight, Chapel or Hangover? For sure! So you already know what the Damage Case and their "Fuck 'n' Roll Damnation" are all about (by the way, an interesting form of reference to AC / DC, haha). It's playing for pure fun and pleasure, resulting from passion for this music and style. It's simply the cleanest, energetic metal art without embellishments and paying attention to details or even anything else. "Fuck 'n' Roll Damnation" is straightforward to the bone. Zero calculation. Alcohol, Satan, Rock 'n' Roll and forward! It is full of riffs in the style of Lemmy and company, patents exploited by the early Iron Maiden, elements of the debut of Bathory, Venom, the pounce of early Destruction and this ubiquitous, punk feistness. You can buy such stuff or not. Love or hate it. There is nothing revealing here, nothing new, nothing more than a pure oldschool. But this is what it is about, totally conscious direction. Album and playing created for headbanging, foot stomping, and drinking to death. Take it or leave it!

Haunted Cenotaph - Haunted Cenotaph (Fallen Temple 2019)

Zaprowadzili nas w otchłań śmierci i zagłady, mroku i posępności i zmusili do przeżywania tych cech swej sztuki w wolniejszy, przytłaczający sposób i jestem pewien, że wielu z was ten kierunek kupi.

English version:

After the first EP/demo, the band got me very interested in their playing, I waited for what they would present along with the next material. And unfortunately, we didn't get the full-length, but another EP. All in all nothing bad, but again a little short. Only one thing worried me, namely that the "Haunted Cenotaph" did not break its predecessor, but just caught up with it and at the last strength. Objectively, it's a piece of great, good-sounding Doom / Death Metal, I will never stop saying and repeating it loudly, but subjectively I do not like this material, I have to be honest. Too many slow parts, too much of this ubiquitous weight and density. It is a totally oldschool art, you can hear such influences like Hellhammer, Samael (early of course), Asphyx, which are still there from the very beginning, but in their heaviest incarnation. There is not enough of these faster parts, which unfortunately affected the balance of the record. Due to this, the reception at some moments begins to be a bit tiring, repetitive and it will suit only fans of all this Doom Metal part of the work of Haunted Cenotaph. They led us into the abyss of death and destruction, darkness and gloom, and forced us to experience these features of their art in a slow, overwhelming way and I am sure that many of you will catch up with this direction. It has its own atmosphere, charm probably too. I admit it, unfortunately it didn't impress as much as I would like. Despite this, I'm not going to give up waiting for the full album. I am still curious and waiting impatiently for more Death than Doom, may it be soon. Meanwhile, who is not afraid of tar and likes to sink in it, just check out Fallen Temple for your copy! And one more thing, respect for a damn good cover art!

Carnifexian - Age of Spiked Mace (Dark Age Productions 2017)

Carnifexian to młody, jednoosobowy projekt z Rosji. To właśnie długa, trzynasto utworowa wycieczka w stronę tych brzmień i klimatu.

English version:

Today's review is something from the world of so-called Dungeon Synth, music somewhat strongly associated with Metal, especially Black Metal. Specifically, its melodic, medieval or Tolkien-like type. Carnifexian is a young, one-man project from Russia. Dungeon Synth strongly inspired by such projects as Elffor, Mortiis, Barak Tor, Erang or even Summoning in its instrumental version. This is a long, thirteen-track trip towards these sounds and atmosphere. And, importantly, Carnifexian can not be accused of any clear secondaryness in its art. A lot of projects within Dungeon Synth or Ambient is unfortunately painfully repetitive (such as Old Tower that is simply tearing the skin from Mortiis), boring or simply bland. Here there is no such situation. The album is not boring, it's great all the time telling its story set in the land of castles, dragons, dungeons and magic. In fact, it flows and you want to play it again, and, you know, it is more than ten compositions. And the atmosphere, here you have the feeling of it, the artist knows what he is dealing with, in what sound he revolves and what this music is supposed to carry with itself, what impression it should generate on the listener. There is a lot of cool melodies, various additions (elements similar to those of Mortiis, used on "Crypt of the Wizard" and "The Stargate") and this project does not prey on exploiting a solution which is excessive monotony or repetition, it  preserves balance and slight diversity of moods. From typically nostalgic to sublime and epic. In some places you can catch some references to the work of Basil Poleduris and his soundtrack to "Conan The Barbarian".
In a word, it is a piece of solid Dungeon Synth, with ideas, a bit of a fresh attitude towards the traditional structure, and above all, one that after a short time will not go into oblivion among those who will have the opportunity to listen to it. I totally recommend this Carnifexian to all the fans of this kind of art!

Taka nostalgia w stosunku do starego grania. Słychać tu sporo Darkthrone z czasów "Under a Funeral Moon", trochę starego Behemoth (demo "From the Pagan Vastlands"), Sacrilegium z okresu płyty "Wicher", czy Mayhem z czasów, kiedy był z nimi Dead i powstawały riffy do "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas".
I to mnie totalnie urzeka. Dlatego właśnie poczynania Nyctophilia będę śledził cały czas, gdyż każda płyta niesie kapitalne doświadczenia i emocje związane ze starym, dobrym Black Metalem jego najlepszych dni. Polecam!

English version:

This month Nyctophilia hits with its new record. And not even a year has passed since the release of the predecessor in the form of "Ad Mortem et Tenebrae". Does this mean that the material may be potentially weak? No way! "Bezdeń" is still a great piece of Black Metal and does not copy what appeared on the previous album. This 32-minute opus seems to be a bit more raw, organic, I think there is more climate and aura of demos, early albums, from both Polish and Scandinavian Black Metal scene of the 90s. It even relates, in its ambient arcades, to Burzum (the ending of "Ku Bezkresowi Rzeczy") or music that Piotr Weltrowski created at the beginning under the banner of December's Fire. In the instrumental track called "Pustka", you can find a pagan-like element, similar to that from the album "Horizons" by Temnozor. It can be heard already from the very beginning. The previous album oscillated around the frosty sound, gloomy pathos, "Bezdeń" takes us to slightly different areas, more dark, referring to the crackling sparks of the old fire that once smoldered on the scene. I have to say straight away that I was very positively surprised here. I expected, in a sense, the twin of "Ad Mortem et Tenebrae", but this did not happen. This album is a partial return to the roots, at least I see it that way. Pure nostalgia towards the old stuff. You can hear a lot of Darkthrone from the times of "Under a Funeral Moon", a bit old Behemoth (demo "From the Pagan Vastlands"), Sacrilegium from the album "Wicher" or Mayhem from the time when Dead was with them and riffs for "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" were created. Grief made a nice trip to the past, still remaining one foot in elements of such groups as Striborg or Xasthur.
Nyctophilia is a band that do not care about the trends and tendencies in the current Black Metal. It walks its own path and creates art that already has over 20 years of experience at the start, as if taken out of those times. And it totally captivates me. That is why I will follow Nyctophilia's actions, because each album carries a fantastic experience and emotions related to the good, old Black Metal from its best days. Totally recommend!

Enslaved - Frost (Osmose Productions 1994/ Season of Mist 2014)

"Frost" to istotnie klimatyczny i brzmieniowy mróz, skuta lodem i smagana wichrem dźwiękowa połać.

English version:

After the extremely successful "Vikingligr Veldi", released by Deathlike Silence (unfortunately, Euronymous did not have a chance to hear the effect of the group's recordings, and he would have been proud of what they achieved), in less than half a year Enslaved hit the scene with another full-length. This time they gave up the symphonic elements, the artistry of their predecessor, in favor of a more raw and frosty, more guitar-oriented and rough record. "Frost" has indeed a freezing climate and sound, creates a soundscape chilled with ice and windswept. The album, apart from specifically Black Metal finish in terms of the composition structure, can also boast an original atmosphere, occasional keys that cut the musical storm from time to time, and unconventional, slightly broken riffs. "Frost" is a unique work when taking into account the entire discography of Enslaved. They never recorded such a typical "Norwegian" album, although its features were already present on "Hordanes Land" and then on "Eld", but it was not exactly what they gave us with "Frost". The subject of Norse mythology, which the band adheres to in their lyrics, has been packed here in a very intense form, it is like the combination of Bathory from the period of "Twilight of the Gods" and "Hammerheart" with the typical sound of Norwegian Black Metal which was represented at that time by Immortal, Mayhem, Gorgoroth or Satyricon. But these are, of course, only comparisons. Enslaved created their own distinctive style and this record is one of the elements of its polishing, one of the most distinguishing Black Metal materials of the first half of the 90s.
"Frost" was also the first Enslaved album in the Osmose Productions catalogue, with whom they also collaborated on several subsequent albums. Released at the end of 1994, the album culminated in a joint tour with the Swedes from Marduk - "Winter War Tour", lasting throughout February 1995 and consisting of 20 concerts throughout Europe.
