"Legacy of Kings" to starszy brat debiutanckiego "Glory to the Brave" - płyty, która tak rozsławiła Hammerfall i z marszu wyniosła zespół na największe europejskie sceny Metalowej muzyki. Album jest nieco mniej surowy niż jego poprzednik, brzmi znacznie lepiej, potężniej, czyściej i wnosi kolejną porcję znakomitych, nośnych melodii, kapitalnych riffów i znakomitych wokali Joacima Cansa. Kawał świetnej roboty odwalił również Patrik Rafling. Rzadko kiedy można w klasycznym Heavy Metalu posłuchać tak świetnej pracy perkusji, tak kipiącej energią i wyczuciem.
Kompozycje na "Legacy of Kings" są dziełem przede wszystkim Oscara Dronjaka, Joakima Cansa oraz... Jespera Stromblada! Gitarzysta In Flames był już w praktyce poza zespołem, lecz wciąż jeszcze pomagał przy powstawaniu tego materiału zanim podjął ostateczną decyzję o poświęceniu całej swojej uwagi wspomnianemu In Flames. Na albumie znalazła się również kompozycja stworzona przez Andiego Mucka oraz Martina Albrechta ze Stormwitch - "At the End of the Rainbow" (pierwotnie z niedokończonym tytułem "At the End of?"). Andy odezwał się swojego czasu do Oscara z informacją, że ma dla nich numer, który będzie bardzo pasował do ich twórczości. Była to ogromna nobilitacja, tym bardziej, że Stormwitch był jedną z najważniejszych inspiracji w twórczości Hammerfall. Zespół postanowił oddać też hołd innej ważnej dla nich grupie, dodając do płyty cover "Back to Back" Pretty Maids. Chcieli tym krokiem przybliżyć ten klasyczny już zespół młodszej grupie fanów i przypomnieć ich debiut "Red Hot & Heavy".
Produkcją płyty, podobnie jak to miało miejsce w przypadku "Glory to the Brave", zajął się Fredrik Nordstrom (Studio Fredman, Gothenburg). Swoją pracą i oddaniem przyczynił się w sporej części do zbudowania charakterystycznego brzmienia Hammerfall. Na "Legacy of Kings" udzielił się również grając na pianinie w zamykającej płytę balladzie "Fallen One". Tak jak debiut powstawał w pośpiechu (grupa miała tylko 17 dni w studio, aby ukończyć cały proces nagrywania, miksów i masteringu), tak w przypadku "Legacy of Kings" mieli na to całe 2 miesiące, można było wszystko dopracować. I efekt jest słyszalny!
Przy okazji nagrywania płyty powstały również tak świetnie odegrane covery jak "Man on the Silver Mountain" Rainbow, "Eternal Dark" Picture oraz "I Want Out" Helloween (z gościnnym udziałem Kai Hansena). Zawsze darzyłem w tej kwestii Hammerfall ogromnym szacunkiem. Potrafili zagrać nieswoje numery w taki sposób, że totalnie pasowały do ich repertuaru, a jednocześnie były bardzo wierne oryginałom, to nie lada sztuka.
"Legacy of Kings" okazał się jeszcze większym sukcesem niż "Glory to the Brave" i zaowocował trasami u boku takich grup jak Gamma Ray, Jag Panzer, Raven i Tank oraz dał im pierwszą headlinerską trasę z Primal Fear, Labirynth oraz Pegazus w roli supportu.
Accept, wspomniane wcześniej Stormwitch czy Picture, Helloween, Warlord, Heavy Load, Judas Priest - echa wszystkich tych zespołów składają się na muzykę Hammerfall, ich styl i estetykę, której hołdowali wtedy i której cześć oddają po dziś dzień. Omawiana tu płyta to opus magnum ich twórczości, a osobiście jeden z moich ulubionych krążków wszech czasów. To symbol ścieżki, którą zespół niegdyś obrał i z której do tej pory nie schodzi!
Poniżej możecie zobaczyć wspomniane rocznicowe wydanie "Legacy of Kings". Składają się na nie 2 płyty cd z albumem, coverami oraz materiałem live, oraz DVD z ekskluzywnym wywiadem z całym składem tworzącym album i wybranymi nagraniami z video "The First Crusade" oraz "Templar Renegade Crusades". Do tego dochodzi jeszcze opasły booklet ze wspomnieniami, mnóstwem zdjęć i memorabiliów oraz tekstami utworów. Dla fanów mus absolutny!

Released in 1998, the second, full-length Hammerfall album is one of the records that will stay with me for til death, or even longer. An album that I will never get bored with, which I will never stop listening to. My personal classic, which is associated with a lot of memories and nostalgia. "Legacy of Kings" was one of the first three Metal albums, which I bought while I was still a kid, and Hammerfall was the first band I discovered myself. I remember like it was today (and in reality 15-16 years ago), how intriguing its cover was, which stands out from the others at the local music stand exhibition. It caught my eye so much that I bought the record without hesitation (it was a license issue of our Metal Mind). It was a hit! Already the first sounds of the opening "Heading the Call" took me over for good, and then I absorbed the whole album. In December last year, Nuclear Blast released a special edition for the 20th anniversary of the release of the album. There was no option that I would not reach for it. This edition is a pretext to recall this Heavy Metal monument, bring back some memories and stories associated with it, tell about the album, which appeared like thunder at a time when hardly anyone played like that anymore.
"Legacy of Kings" is the older brother of the debut album "Glory to the Brave" - a record that made Hammerfall so famous and took the band out on the march to the largest European Metal music scenes. The album is a bit less raw than its predecessor, sounds much better, more powerful, cleaner and brings another portion of great, powerful tunes, outstanding riffs and excellent vocals of Joacim Cans. Patrik Rafling also did a great job. It is rarely possible to listen to such a great work of percussion in a classic Heavy Metal, one so full of energy and sense.
The compositions for "Legacy of Kings" are the work of, above all, Oscar Dronjak, Joakim Cans and ... Jesper Stromblad! In Flames guitarist, he was already in practice no longer in the band, but he was still helping with the creation of this material before he made the final decision to devote all his attention to the mentioned In Flames. The album also includes a composition created by Andy Muck and Martin Albrecht of Stormwitch - "At the End of the Rainbow" (originally with an unfinished title "At the End of?"). Andy called Oscar once, telling him that he had a composition for them that would suit their work. It was a huge ennoblement, the more that Stormwitch was one of the most significant inspirations for Hammerfall. The band decided to pay homage to one more group important for them, by adding a cover of "Back to Back" by Pretty Maids. They wanted to introduce this classic band to a younger group of fans and recall their debut "Red Hot & Heavy".
The production of the album, as it was with "Glory to the Brave", was conducted by Fredrik Nordstrom (Studio Fredman, Gothenburg). Through his work and devotion, he contributed a lot to building the characteristic Hammerfall sound. On "Legacy of Kings" he also played the piano on the "Fallen One" ballad. Just like the debut was created in a hurry (the group had only 17 days in the studio to complete the whole process of recording, mixing and mastering), in the case of "Legacy of Kings" they had whole 2 months - they could focus on everything. And the effect can be heard!
During the recording of the album also such well-performed covers were made - Rainbow's "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Eternal Dark" by Picture and "I Want Out" by Helloween (with guest participation by Kai Hansen). I have always had great respect in this matter towards Hammerfall. They could play other bands stuff in such a way that they totally matched their repertoire, and at the same time they were very faithful to the originals, it's not an easy art to do so.
"Legacy of Kings" turned out to be even more successful than "Glory to the Brave" and resulted in tours alongside such groups like Gamma Ray, Jag Panzer, Raven and Tank, and gave them the first headlining tour with Primal Fear, Labirynth and Pegazus as support .
Accept, the previously mentioned Stormwitch or Picture, Helloween, Warlord, Heavy Load, Judas Priest - the echoes of all these bands can be heard in Hammerfall's music, in their style and aesthetics, all of which they worshiped at that time and which they honor to this day. Record discussed here is their opus magnum, and personally one of my favorite albums of all time. It is a symbol of the path that the band once chose and which they did not left!

It consist of two CD's with an original album, covers and live material, and a DVD with an exclusive interview with the line-up responsible for creating the album, and selected recordings from the video "The First Crusade" and "Templar Renegade Crusades".
