Bladestorm - Storm of Blades (Thrashing Madness Productions 2021)

To jest to! Wreszcie! Bladestorm swoim EP "Storm of Blades" przywrócili mi wiarę w to granie! Niech Bladestorm nagrywa w te pędy pełny album i do ataku! Jeńców nie będzie!

English translation:

This is it! At last! This is what I am looking for in classic heavy metal, such music is still able to attract my attention in this genre and aesthetics. Unfortunately, heavy metal has bored me a lot lately, I was not able to find any band that would restore in me the desire to explore this music further, excluding the old classics. Everything was secondary, shallow, without energy or originality, or just those good, catchy riffs that you are later humming. This is what good old heavy metal stands for, right? Bladestorm with their EP "Storm of Blades" restored my faith in this kind of metal! You can hear the passion, energy and idea for the performed stuff. And there are no youngsters in the line-up, these are gentlemen with a specific experience on stage and knowledge in metal music. Half of the line-up are former musicians of Wrocław's (Poland) death/thrash Leviathan. The band gives us three compositions that kicks ass so much that is is hard to sit after it! There is old Judas Priest in it, Accept from their gold days, Pretty Maids from their debut "Red, Hot & Heavy" and a pinch of Running Wild. Pure gold! And above it all hangs this unique energy that gives the material "that something", this kind of magic. The whole material is crowned with the Priests "Jawbreaker" cover and we genuinely stay with broken jaws. Let Bladestorm record a full-length album withut hesitation and storm the scene! There will be no prisoners!

Gravety - Bow Down (Metal on Metal Records 2021)

Pierwszą recenzją w 2022 będzie "Bow Down" Gravety. Aczkolwiek muszę płytę polecić chociażby fanom wspomnianych Eternal Champion i Visigoth, bo Panowie idą we właśnie takie klimaty. Fajna odskocznia i to tyle.

English translation:

I start my broader reviews this year with catching up on some materials that I didn't have time to write about in 2021. Some of them have already appeared in the "Press paly" series on the blog's Facebook page, and some will appear here. The first review in 2022 will be "Bow Down" by Gravety. For some time now, I have been planning to return to epic heavy metal for a moment to see if there is a chance that this style of playing will still surprise me and interest me again. All in all, I hve listened to such bands as Manowar (I still like them and this is probably the exception to the rule), Manilla Road, Visigoth or Brocas Helm. However, it didn't seem like it would work, and Gravety didn't help here. However, I have to recommend the album to the fans of the already mentioned Visigoth and Eternal Champion, because the gentlemen go into such a climate. We have classic heavy metal here with a large dose of epicness and pathos, which results mainly from the subject of the song themes. The lyrics on it tell stories from "Conan the Barbarian", "Lord of the Rings", "The Hobbit", "Game of Thrones" and "The Wheel of Time". The most interesting moments of the album are the opening track, "Tower of Ghenjei" and "Unleash the Flame", which ends with a sample from "The Fellowship of the Ring" - in the words of Gandalf before he fell into the Khazad-Dum abyss - "Fly, you fools". I will not say, a very nice idea and it is catchy, especially if someone is enthusiastic about the topic. Musically it is very correct, with good sound, a lot of melody and quite catchy choruses. And some acoustics are here as well. It would not be a mistake to add Gravety to the bands that characterize epic music originating from the USA, because here is everything that characterise this stuff, but the band is from Germany. So, the gentlemen are totally inspired by groups from overseas. Unfortunately, I didn't get hold of it enough to stay with this material for longer and give myself a reason to come back to listening to this kind of music. Probably not this time, if at all. It was nice to check something different, all in all. Nevertheless, I would like to emphasize - for fans of the style performed by Gravety, this album is a worth checking release, you will not be disappointed.

Bez kombinowania i w stylu lat początków naszej rodzimej sceny. Wracając do muzyki. Podsumowując, płyta nie powala w kwestii tekstów - generalnie nie moja bajka i styl (z wyjątkami), natomiast muzycznie totalnie go kupuję i dzięki temu, będę miał ochotę go słuchać.

English translation:

Thanks to this year's vinyl release, which I have just received, I decided to write down my reflections on the new Destroyers album. Last year it didn't work out, somehow I postponed it for an indefinite period of time, until there was an incentive to write something. Destroyers is one of the groups that built the Polish metal scene in the 1980s. Their work is either loved or hated, or you just have a certain fondness for it. Personally, I am not a fan of the lyrical layer that the band represents, at least half of the lyrics do not appeal to me at all, but musically it is a really solid piece of metal music. Without combining and in the style of the early years of our Polish scene. Thanks to this, I return to the works of Destroyers from time to time. That is why I can say that I'm part of this group that has some kind of sentiment towards them. "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła" is Destroyers' third full-length album and is a returning one after many years of absence. The first thing I can say about it is that it is the best album the band has recorded. Yes, it sounds good, there's energy, nice riffs. Marek's vocals are at their prime and his singing style that is so characteristic doesn't leave him. The subject matter of the lyrics and their aesthetics have not changed over the years, so somehow I do not really see the point in discussing this issue. If you know Destroyers' works well in this respect, then you know what to expect. Nevertheless, I really liked "Zemsta Roninów" (maybe simple to the core, but "Tnie katana! Głowy ścina!" is so memorable) and "Nine Circles of Evil". Back to the music. Injecting some fresh blood on the guitars did good to the band. The work of Dominik and Tomek built the quality of this material. In fact, it's mostly for their guitars that I listen to this album and want to come back to it. Thanks to them, it has the right edge, energy and feeling and thus stands out from the other two albums of the group. It is simpler, less combining here, there is a lot of that classic thrash/heavy metal in it. Respect must also go to Marek Łoza in this matter, because he is also responsible for some of the music on the album. To sum up, the album don't win in terms of lyrics - generally not my cup of tea and style (with exceptions), but musically I totally buy it and thanks to that, I want to listen to it. Here, "Nine Circles of Evil" absolutely wins and if someone does not like Marek's lyrics, but has the appropriate distance to the topic, he should listen to the album. A good portion of classic metal sounds.

Helloween - Helloween (Nuclear Blast 2021)

Mamy tu utwory bardziej wymagające, rozbudowane, a i krótkie strzały pełne energii.

English translation:

A legendary band for me, one of my favorites and very important in the history and development of metal music (they gave rise to the European leg of power metal). I didn't even dare to dream that I would see Hansen and Kiske again in its ranks, who went their own musical path many years ago. What a surprise it was for me when both men joined the band on the "Pumpkins United" tour, and a shock and joy when they joined the band permanently, and the band sealed it with an eloquently titled album - "Helloween". Yes, the whole family is finally together! "Helloween" is an album dripping with melody, thanks to two or even three vocalists (because Kai here and there adds something from himself) filled with various vocals and a very extensive musical palette full of ideas. The guitars, as befits this band, lead the way, and the solos seal the excellent riffs. Here we have more demanding, complex songs, and also short shots full of energy. It may not be a work equal to "Keepers" or "Master of the Rings", but this album brings to mind those three classic materials, and not only with its graphic design. It is best described by the song "Best Time", which not only shows how well the band is doing, but also refers to the hit "I Want Out". The sound is modern, the compositions combine Heloween of the 1980s and those later, when only Andi Deris was behind the microphone. There are not many "returns" of classic bands, so successful and so necessary for the scene. Helloween showed the world that they still represent a high level, and the return of Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen only improved this status, highlighted the still pulsating potential of the group. The band once again conquered the lists of the best releases, made people talk about the band. Let this iron be forged and phoenix reborn from the ashes. Seven keys, seven musicians, one legacy!

Ironbound - The Lightbringer (Ossuary Records 2021)

Numer ten tak bardzo przypomina "Dream of Mirrors" z "Brave New World".

English translation:

Already the first minutes of listening and I know what will happen on this album. The song "The Witch Hunt" enters and the conclusion is only one - Iron Maiden. And this theory holds true throughout the length of the whole album. Yes, "The Lightbringer" in case of riffs and melodies, also in the solos, reminds so much of the achievements of the British band. Even the singer seems to draw a lot from Bruce's technique. I get to the song "Smoke and Mirrors" and get rid of all remaining illusions. This track is so much like "Dream of Mirrors" from "Brave New World". I'm a little surprised that somehow this fact doesn't offend me. I am answering this question with one simple statement. This is just good, I enjoy listening to it. I realize that these Maiden influences, so obvious in all respects, can create mixed feelings among a lot of people, but when the band does it so well, is it worth picking on? Probably not. While exploring the album, I found a pinch of references to Deep Purple and Grave Digger. Here and there is this rock solemnity (in fact Deep Purple was a very important band for Steve and the company) and a certain element of German riffing style, but it is a marginal matter. The album cover bounds everything together. When you look closely, it may refer to "Somewhere in Time" and "Virtual XI". Well, when you go into Maiden stuff, let's do it properly! I will say yes to it. I listened to it, it was fun. We have a Polish answer to the greatest heavy metal band of all time. If the Blazon Stone was successful (with Running Wild), why not Ironbound? I wish the band success, because they have a feeling for Iron Maiden's music flowing in their veins.

Shadow Warrior - Cyberblade (Ossuary Records 2020)

Pierwsza sprawa to nowe wpływy i ciekawiej brzmiące kompozycje. I fajnie! Rzeźbią świetne riffy, a gdzieś to wszytko ucieka.

English translation:

I must admit that I was waiting for the first Shadow Warrior full-length. I waited, because I was curious if the band would make some progress in relation to the EP, and would fix some gaps. It would be extremely desirable, because their music has a lot of potential, even though it is simple, classic heavy metal. Has it happened? Yes and no. The first thing are new influences and more interesting-sounding compositions. As before, they played heavily in the style of Tokyo Blade, early Def Leppard, etc., now the album is dominated by influences from the old Running Wild, Iron Maiden and the Japanese from Metalucifer. And that's great! The album is richer, there is more fun for listening to it and discovering all these noble inspirations. This is an advantage! Ania Kłos's vocal is also a plus, there is more power in it, it is more aggressive and ... it dominates the album. And its domination, in my opinion, did a little harm to the guitars, which are hidden in the back. They play great riffs but it all hides somewhere. I have such an impression. It just begs to be put forward. The album would gain power immediately, and that's how it is not much better in this matter than the EP. This is the only drawback of this material. Coming back to the points in favour, it is nice that there are a few hit-like songs that stay in your head; title one, "Demon's Sword" (the first so heavy track in the band's output) and "Iron Hawk Rising" - deserved a single. Once again, the band records almost perfect material. Maybe I'm a bit disappointed, but despite some shortcomings, I will be happy to come back to the album, because anyway it's really enjoyable, and I just like this band. I say "yes" to "Cyberblade" all in all.

Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids (Noise Records 1984/ BMG 2020)

Hellhammer zwolnił trochę obroty, postawił szczególnie na brud brzmienia, przygniatającą atmosferę i ciężkie riffy, posępny klimat podszyty śmiercią, makabrą i apokaliptycznymi wizjami. To tutaj możemy znaleźć m.in. słynny coverowany przez masę zespołów (np. Behemoth) "Horus/Aggressor" oraz niemal 10-minutowy "Triumph of Death", w którym znajdziecie jedne z najbardziej szaleńczych wokali swojego czasu. To zespół i materiał o niesamowitym znaczeniu!

English translation:

Historical material, one of the undeniable foundations of Black Metal, an inspiration for so many bands that it's hard to count. The band itself is also an example of a group where so recently abused word as "cult" finds its full justification. Because it is a damn cult! Hellhammer, apart from the demos themselves, and their "Apocalyptic Raids" recorded in 1984, was then a real diamond of the underground scene, which was about to become a brilliant in the form of Celtic Frost. Venom ruled in terms of brutality and speed, while Hellhammer crushed with rawness, weight and darkness of their compositions. It was so basement-like and in some parts ominous that it outclassed all materials that at that time could claim to be the most extreme. It is true that in 1984 we deal with the debut of Bathory, but this new band, filled with punk, oscillated around faster and more straightforward compositions, it was closer to Venom. Hellhammer slowed down a bit, focused especially on the dirt of the sound, the overwhelming atmosphere and heavy riffs, the bleak climate lined with death, macabre and apocalyptic visions. "Apocalyptic Raids" is the first material with Martin (as Salyed Necros) on bass and the last one under the Hellhammer banner (apart from the "Death Metal" compilation). On this EP it can be seen how significantly, being still in underground, the quality of the group's materials increased in relation to the demos. It brought new energy and ideas not only to the music itself, but also to the lyrics. Here we can find the famous "Horus/Aggressor" covered by a lot of bands (eg. Behemoth) and the almost 10-minute "Triumph of Death", in which you'll find one of the craziest vocals of your time. Unfortunately, the critics hammered "Apocalyptic Raids", and Hellhammer began to die, overwhelmed by new materials from Slayer, Metallica, Mercyful Fate or Metal Church. Their skills grew, but it was still digestible only to a small number of people, especially in terms of sound. The band, afraid of losing the opportunity to release the album, abandoned the Hellhammer sign, transforming into Celtic Frost and proposing a new concept to the publisher. It worked, thanks to which the well-known "Morbid Tales" was created the same year. The rest is history, but nobody forgets about Hellhammer and will never forget! Without this name, the extreme scene wouldn't look the same, there wouldn't be Celtic Frost, or even Darkthrone as we now know it. This is a band and material of incredible importance!
Below is the latest reissue of "Apocalyptic Raids", made with the participation of Tom Gabriel Fisher. The album is released in a beautiful digibook with lots of archive photos and memories written by Tom. The issue is available on both CD and vinyl.

Celtic Frost - Into the Pandemonium (Nosie Records 1987/2017)

Gdy spojrzycie w prawy górny róg obrazu, to zobaczycie część użytą na „Into the Pandemonium”.

English translation:

Strange, for its time, and very experimental, but intriguing album. Certainly the fans of the group after the albums "Morbid Tales" and "To Mega Therion" did not expect to hear such a thing. It was a kind of revolution! Nevertheless, this proves that Celtic Frost was not afraid to try new things, new solutions, generally speaking musical explorations. After the considerable success of "To Mega Therion" and the tours accompanying the promotion of this material, one could expect they would stay on this road, but it didn't happen. Tom and Martin had other plans.
Released in 1987, "Into the Pandaemonium" is a very diverse album, which at the same time can encourage with its "otherness" and richness, or on the contrary, discourage because of the departure from the previously chosen path. Here we have songs that are a mixture of Hard Rock and Thrash, such as "I Won't Dance" or the opening "Mexican Radio" from the repertoire of Wall of Voodoo, some typical Celtic Frost stuff from previous albums ("Inner Sanctum" or the great "Babylon Fell") and a lot of symphonic-electronic attempts with "One in Their Pride" and "Tristesses de la Luna" (no metal sounds at all!) at the forefront. It's just a real mine of variety!
"Into the Pandaemonium" was an album that (at the time it was released) was a pioneering work, pathing the way for certain concepts. At that time, nobody combined symphonic elements with metal music, no band employed an orchestra to work on the album (Manowar did in the '88). It was undoubtedly a risky but ambitious undertaking. Noise Records was not satisfied with the band's plans and it was not without serious tensions, but it didn't change that much.
Certainly, this album had a significant impact on many bands, such as the Japanese Sigh. They threw the elements contained on "Into the Pandemonium" onto a broader ground, exploited it in such a way that those additions became a permanent, important element of the compositions.
The cover of the album also deserves a few words, as it also differed from the previously chosen aesthetics and concepts. It is decorated with a part of the work of Hieronimous Bosch (specifically the one reflecting his vision of hell), a Dutch sixteenth-century painter, entitled "Garden of Earthly Delights". When you look at the upper right corner of the image, you will see the part used on "Into the Pandaemonium". For the first time, it was nothing typically blasphemous or unquestionably devilish, as it was on previous albums and in Hellhammer.
I admit that "Into the Pandaemonium", after a while, became my favorite material among the achievements of Celtic Frost; from time to time I want to rediscover and explore it again. These type of records gain a lot over time; it turns out that their role was and is important, they are works that always deserve enormous respect. Do I recommend it? Of course! For those who do not know this album yet (I don't know if there will be such people, but it is possible) it may seem demanding, a bit inaccessible, but it really has a lot to offer.
Below I present a really great reissue of this album prepared by Noise/BMG, which was released in 2017. In addition to the album itself, we get a solid digibook with an extensive booklet containing liner notes and a lot of previously unpublished photographs. I consider this edition to be the best one from the ones already issued on CD.

Kat - Without Looking Back (Pure Steel Records 2019)

Najjaśniejszy punkt to oczywiście partie gitar i solówki.
Trochę to zaburza tracklistę.
Zatem ten obraz jak najbardziej idzie w parze z tytułem "Without Looking Back" i śmiało zaliczam go do udanych.
Tyle ode mnie. No, ale i podszedłem do niego nieco inaczej.

English version:

14 years after the release of Mind Cannibals, Piotr Luczyk returns with a new Kat album. It was a bit of a wait and what we got is at least satisfying, if not very good - that's my purely subjective opinion. I am well aware of reactions on "Without Looking Back" from the metal environment and criticism, that the opinions are unflattering and that the album is, to put it bluntly, lambasted. I don't know why, really. Putting aside all these animosities between musicians that have taken place in the last few/dozen years, and focusing on the art they created themselves, the latest Kat album cannot be accused of being bad, it would be nitpicking. There is an accusation that this is not Kat anymore, but a completely different creation. Well, we all know that music evolves, often it doesn't stay the same all the time, unless it is an intentional and deliberate approach. Kat under Piotr's command does not actually look back and moves away from the previous Thrash Metal, the band is heading towards the classic Heavy Metal of the 80s and early 90s, mixed with elements of classic rock. In some places even Blues, but these are only slight inserts. One could say that it is somewhat a return to the roots of Kat, the music with which this band began. It's completely not what they proposed on the previous album, or on any other. There are references to Scorpions, Accept, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, maybe even Iron Maiden. The record works well in this style, balancing between Metal and Rock, like once TSA did on their "Heavy Metal World" or Turbo on their "Smak Ciszy". We have ballad elements here (such as "Wild" or "The Promised Land", for example), hammonds referring to Purple, and on the other hand strong, energetic tracks such as "Black Night in My Chair", "Flying Fire" or "Walls of Whispers "(this is my favorite one from this album), which are already firmly embedded in Heavy Metal. The brightest points are of course guitar and solo parts. Piotr's artistry cannot be denied in this matter, negating it would be at least inappropriate. Everything is finished with a really good sound and production at a decent level.
Some of the things that didn't appeal to me here, are a bit too long compositions. Here and there are certain instrumental longueurs that would work better live than on the album. A little shorter would work better, the disc would have a better flow. Make 45 minutes from an hour and the album would not lose dynamics, it would become more condensed. And the second thing, but that's a trifle, the repetition of the word "Fire" in as many as three song titles. It disrupts the tracklist a bit. I thought to myself that at the end, only the cover of "Fight Fire with Fire" by Metallica was missing. Well, I have no other comments. As for me, the album defends itself well and I will gladly come back to it. Its otherness appeals to me and I don't mind that the Kat logo still appears here. It's just a new Kat, a new vision, new ideas. That's all. Taking this CD in my hands, I knew what to expect and I did not look at it through the prism of previous achievements, but rather as a new creation and chapter in the band's history.
Finally, I would like to mention the cover art. It has been accused of inconsistency between it and the title. Well, in the end, the figure of the executioner from the foreground turns away on his heel from the coffins from "Oddech Wymarłych Światów", the cage from "Ballady" and the tombstone from "Róże Miłości..." (all set in flames) and he goes off with his axe and beheaded heads. Therefore, this picture goes hand in hand with the title "Without Looking Back" and I confidently rank it as successful.
That'a all from me. I like the album very much, more than I expected at first. Well, I approached it a bit differently. I would be lying if I wanted to make strong critical conclusions that I have encountered in many other reviews. I highly recommend this album, it almost completely appealed to me!

Stormwitch - Bound to the Witch (Massacre Records 2018)

"Bound to the Witch" to 11 pełny album tego niemieckiego zespołu i... Wciąż mocny i imponujący, mimo upływu lat. Jako bonus zostały tu dodane 3 utwory z 3 pierwszych płyt grupy, nagrane ponownie na tę okazję: "Priest of Evil", "Rats in the Attic" oraz "Stronger than Heaven".
Polecam!

English version:

The album that should take every Heavy Metal fan by force! A beautiful example of how, in the era of more extreme stuff, you can create - within the genre's classics - still fresh and thrilling material. It's almost the same form that the band had on such albums as "Stronger than Heaven" or "Eye of the Storm". Stormwitch has never been very popular or well known to everyone. Nevertheless, they left an imprint on the bands involved in either Heavy or Power Metal in the 90s and after. The best example is Hammerfall, or maybe even Gamma Ray.
"Bound to the Witch" is the 11th full-length album by this German band and ... It's something phenomenal! After 38 years of existence, with such a baggage of composed music, so many implemented ideas, and only one member of the original line-up in the ranks (vocalist Andy Muck), to record such an album you need to have this sort of "spark"! On "Bound to the Witch" we have the essence of their style, i.e. traditional Heavy Metal combined with melody and a bit fantasy aesthetics. Maybe it is now closer to Power Metal (since "Stronger than Heaven" they have begun to move in this direction) than the feisty German Heavy from the time of the first few albums, but it's still Stormwitch in all its glory, full of creative inspiration and just as thrilling as then. The album is filled with catchy riffs, equally catchy choruses, melodic solos, without a lack of desired heaviness. At the top of this pyramid are Andy's vocals. Still strong and impressive, despite the passage of years. Songs that deserve special attention here are the opening "Songs of Steel", followed by "Odin's Ravens" (proud representant of the album!), "Arya" (yes, the heroine of the song is none else than Arya Stark, one of the most important characters of the saga "The Song of Ice and Fire") and "Ancient Times". I recommend checking these songs as a foretaste of the whole record. I think that those who are susceptible to such a style will be completely hooked. As a bonus, 3 songs from the first 3 albums of the group were added, recorded again for this occasion: "Priest of Evil", "Rats in the Attic" and "Stronger than Heaven". They were recorded in the current style of the band, without original dirt and a slight dose of ominousness. Some may whine that this is not the same and just a waste of time. Well, personally, I really like what they did with them here.
What can I say, the album has gripped me (maybe that's why I'm not very objective, hehe). I had almost the same incredibly positive feelings when once discovering the albums "Legacy of Kings" by Hammerfall or Pictures' "Eternal Dark". A great record by veterans of the scene who haven't said the last word yet! Totally recommended!

Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind (EMI 1983/ Parlophone 2014)

Po oszałamiającym sukcesie "The Number of the Beast", który otworzył przed Iron Maiden hale koncertowe na całym świecie, przyszedł czas na album ugruntowujący ich pozycję. Takie wyzwanie stanęło przed "Piece of Mind".
Płyta nagrana została w marcu 1983 roku w Compass Point Studios w Nassau na Bahamach (miesiąc późnej AC/DC nagrywało tam swój "Flick of the Switch"). Wcześniej uniemożliwiały mu to zobowiązania wobec swojej poprzedniej ekipy, zespołu Samson.
Na "Piece of Mind" składa się 9 utworów. W porównaniu do "The Number of the Beast" nie ma tu już tylu hitów, zaledwie dwa w postaci singlowych "Flight of the Icarus" oraz słynnego "The Trooper" - bez tej kompozycji w setliście nie może odbyć się żaden koncert Maidenów. Wbrew powszechnej opinii, która za najjaśniejsze punkty albumu wskazałaby jeszcze "Revelations", czy "Where Eagles Dare", ja skłaniam się, żeby takie miano przydzielić utworom "Still Life", "Quest for Fire", czy wieńczącemu materiał "To Tame a Land". Te utwory zapowiadały kompozycyjne zmiany, które wraz z kolejnymi płytami będą rozwijały się w pełnej krasie, przybierając coraz częściej nieco bardziej refleksyjny, złożony charakter niż ten czysto bezpośredni. Co się tyczy tego ostatniego, wspomnianego przed chwilą kawałka, może nie przebija "Hallowed be Thy Name", ani "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" z wydanego rok później "Powerslave", ale jest jak najbardziej poprawny i ładnie staje na podium obok dwóch wymienionych numerów, zajmując zaszczytne, trzecie miejsce.
Moim zdaniem do wyrównania z "The Number of the Beast" trochę brakowało, niemniej "Piece of Mind" sobie poradził i zabezpieczył pozycję grupy, owocując niespadającą sprzedażą płyt i kolejną ogromną trasą po całym świecie, na którą składało się 140 koncertów. Po latach album obrósł patyną i dołączył do grona najwybitniejszych albumów w dorobku Iron Maiden, bez wątpienia zasłużenie.

English version:

After the stunning success of "The Number of the Beast", which opened concert halls around the world for Iron Maiden, the time has come for an album to consolidate their position. Such a challenge was faced by "Piece of Mind".
The album was recorded in March 1983 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas (a month later AC/DC recorded its "Flick of the Switch" there). Compared to the predecessor, filled with hits and dominated by a fleshy sound, "Piece of Mind" was characterized by less selectivity in this matter, being a bit flattened, while the bass line and vocals of Dickinson were strongly exposed. The compositions might have lost their dynamics here, the punk buzz is no longer present, they are a bit slower and longer, but this does not weaken the record that much. With this album, Iron Maiden has developed its own, distinctive style, going beyond the strict aesthetics of NWOBHM. The recording of "Piece of Mind" was associated with one more, or actually two, significant changes - the one considering replacement of the drummer, and the fact of composing debuts of Bruce. As for the change behind the drums, Clive Burr unfortunately did not live up to the tour and had to leave the ranks making room for ex Trust drummer Nicko McBrain, who is present in the band to this day. This change left the biggest mark on the band, the style of both musicians was radically different. Clive was all about feeling, energy, and Nicko - a technique. Dickinson could finally start writing his compositions. Earlier he was prevented from doing that because of commitments to his previous band, Samson.
"Piece of Mind" consists of 9 songs. Compared to "The Number of the Beast", there are not so many hits here, just two in the form of single "Flight of the Icarus" and the famous "The Trooper" - without this composition in the setlist no Maiden concert can take place. Contrary to popular opinion, which would also indicate "Revelations" or "Where Eagles Dare" as the brightest points of the album, I tend to assign such title to "Still Life", "Quest for Fire" or "To Tame a Land" that ends the record. These songs heralded compositional changes which, along with subsequent albums, will develop in all their glory, becoming more and more often of a reflexive, complex character than the purely direct one. As for the last track just mentioned, it may not beat the "Hallowed be Thy Name" or "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" from the "Powerslave" released a year later, but it nicely stands on the podium next to the two others, taking honorable, third place.
In my opinion, the alignment with "The Number of the Beast" was a bit lacking, but "Piece of Mind" managed to secure the group's position, resulting in non-falling sales of records and another huge tour around the world, which consisted of 140 concerts. After years, the album turned patina and joined the list of the most outstanding albums among the Iron Maiden discography, undoubtedly deservedly.

Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast (EMI 1982/ Parlophone 2014)

Niemniej jednak ja "The Number of the Beast" wielbię i skłaniam się uważać za jedną z najwspanialszych płyt, jakie zrodziła metalowa scena.
Wydany w 1982 roku "The Number of the Beast" był pierwszym krążkiem Maidenów, na którym zagościł Bruce Dickinson.
Mam tu na myśli singlowe "Run to the Hills" oraz tytułowy "The Number of the Beast", rozpędzający się z każdą minutą, epicki "Hallowed Be Thy Name", kontynuujący opowieść o Charlotte "22 Acacia Avenue" i potężny "The Prisoner". Z pozostałych na szczególną uwagę zasługuje "Children of the Damned", charakteryzujący się nieco balladowym zacięciem.
"The Number of the Beast" poszedł za ciosem bardzo dobrze przyjętego "Killers" i zaowocował pierwszą tak ogromną trasą koncertową (jedną z największych w karierze grupy), jaką była "The Beast on the Road", trwająca od końca lutego do początku grudnia 1982 roku.

English version:

There are such records, which status can be compared to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy - you need to know it, respect it... Whether you worship it or not is an individual matter. Nevertheless, I adore "The Number of the Beast" and tend to consider it to be one of the greatest albums begotten by the metal scene. I do not mean only the 80s stuff here, but the whole genre. Listening to it gives the impression that it is still fresh, timeless, that it captivates the sense of hearing just as it did when it was released. An unnamed element has been enchanted in it, which has been possessing metalheads - for 37 years already, and the situation is not changing.
Released in 1982, "The Number of the Beast" was the first Maiden album to feature Bruce Dickinson. The previous vocalist, charismatic Paul Di'Anno, reportedly had notorious problems with stimulants and the leverage of the band's growing popularity, which unfortunately effected in him saying goodbye to the group. Many thought that the change at the singer's place, at that time, was a very unfavorable move, but as history has proved, it was a hit in the bull's-eye. Bruce fit into his place like a glove and without him behind the microphone, Iron Maiden would not be the same creation as it is now.
"The Number of the Beast" consists of 8 compositions, of which over half are concert hits to date, permanently rooted in the set list. I mean the single "Run to the Hills" and the title track "The Number of the Beast", speeding up by every minute, the epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "22 Acacia Avenue", continuing the story of Charlotte, and the powerful "The Prisoner". Also "Children of the Damned", with a bit of a ballad feeling, deserves special attention. The other two songs, "Invaders" and "Gangland" are not so impressive and in my opinion they pass without a special echo. On the version from 1998/2014 shown below, "Total Eclipse" was added as a bonus track. That one, according to the current opinion of the band, should have replaced the not very successful "Gangland" (I agree here completely).
From this album, the history of Iron Maiden starts all over again really, lagging behind the first two albums that marked the years of struggle for position on the scene and searching for their own sound and style. "The Number of the Beast" followed the success of the well-received "Killers" and resulted in the first huge world tour (one of the largest in the group's career), which was "The Beast on the Road", lasting from the end of February to the beginning of December 1982. It consisted of 184 concerts in 18 countries. All within 10 months!
To sum up, the third Maiden album is one of the milestones of metal art and one of the most recognizable albums, not only due to the characteristic cover and the character of Eddie, but above all, the music it contains. The material is undeniably timeless, to which the next generations will listen to, for sure!
