Stormwitch - Bound to the Witch (Massacre Records 2018)

Płyta, która każdego fana Heavy Metalu powinna wziąć szturmem! Piękny przykład na to, jak w dobie bardziej ekstremalnego grania można tworzyć - w ramach klasyki gatunku - wciąż świeże i porywające materiały. To niemal ta sama forma, jaką zespół mógł się poszczycić przy takich płytach jak "Stronger than Heaven" oraz "Eye of the Storm". Stormwitch nigdy nie był zbyt popularny ani jakoś świetnie przez wszystkich znany. Niemniej odcisnął piętno na ekipach parających się czy to właśnie Heavy, czy Power Metalem w latach 90-tych i potem. Najlepszym tego przykładem jest Hammerfall czy może nawet Gamma Ray.
"Bound to the Witch" to 11 pełny album tego niemieckiego zespołu i... Jest to coś fenomenalnego! Po 38 latach istnienia, z takim bagażem skomponowanej muzyki, tyloma zrealizowanymi pomysłami, i tylko jednym oryginalnym członkiem dawnego składu w szeregach (wokalista Andy Muck) nagrać taki album, to trzeba mieć tę "iskrę"! Na "Bound to the Witch" mamy esencję ich stylu, czyli tradycyjny Heavy Metal połączony z melodyjnością i nieco fantastycznym sznytem. Może obecnie jest tu bliżej do Power Metalu (już od "Stronger than Heaven" zaczęli iść właśnie w takim kierunku), niż zadziornego, niemieckiego Heavy z czasów pierwszych kilku płyt, ale to wciąż Stormwitch w pełnej krasie, pełen weny twórczej i tak samo porywający. Płyta wypełniona jest chwytliwymi riffami, wpadającymi w ucho refrenami, melodyjnymi solówkami, nie będąc przy tym pozbawioną odrobiny pożądanego ciężaru. Na szczycie tej piramidy stoi wokal Andiego. Wciąż mocny i imponujący, mimo upływu lat. Utworami, które zasługują tu na uwagę szczególną są otwierający płytę "Songs of Steel", następujący potem "Odin's Ravens" (wizytówka materiału!), "Arya" (tak, bohaterką utworu jest nie kto inny jak Arya Stark, jedna z ważniejszych postaci sagi "Pieśń Lodu i Ognia") oraz "Ancient Times". Te utwory polecam sprawdzić jako przedsmak całości. Uważam, że podatnych na taki akurat styl grania wciągną bez reszty. Jako bonus zostały tu dodane 3 utwory z 3 pierwszych płyt grupy, nagrane ponownie na tę okazję: "Priest of Evil", "Rats in the Attic" oraz "Stronger than Heaven". Zostały odegrane w obecnej stylistyce zespołu, bez oryginalnego brudu i lekkiej dozy złowieszczości, także niektórzy mogą marudzić, że to nie to i szkoda czasu. Mi ten zabieg się spodobał.
Co tu dużo mówić, album mnie porwał (być może przez to jestem mało obiektywny, hehe). Towarzyszyły mi przy jego słuchaniu niemal te same niesamowicie pozytywne uczucia, takie jak niegdyś odkrywając albumy "Legacy of Kings" Hammerfall, czy "Eternal Dark" Picture. Kawał świetnego grania w wykonaniu weteranów sceny, którzy jeszcze ostatniego słowa nie powiedzieli! Polecam!

The album that should take every Heavy Metal fan by force! A beautiful example of how, in the era of more extreme stuff, you can create - within the genre's classics - still fresh and thrilling material. It's almost the same form that the band had on such albums as "Stronger than Heaven" or "Eye of the Storm". Stormwitch has never been very popular or well known to everyone. Nevertheless, they left an imprint on the bands involved in either Heavy or Power Metal in the 90s and after. The best example is Hammerfall, or maybe even Gamma Ray.
"Bound to the Witch" is the 11th full-length album by this German band and ... It's something phenomenal! After 38 years of existence, with such a baggage of composed music, so many implemented ideas, and only one member of the original line-up in the ranks (vocalist Andy Muck), to record such an album you need to have this sort of "spark"! On "Bound to the Witch" we have the essence of their style, i.e. traditional Heavy Metal combined with melody and a bit fantasy aesthetics. Maybe it is now closer to Power Metal (since "Stronger than Heaven" they have begun to move in this direction) than the feisty German Heavy from the time of the first few albums, but it's still Stormwitch in all its glory, full of creative inspiration and just as thrilling as then. The album is filled with catchy riffs, equally catchy choruses, melodic solos, without a lack of desired heaviness. At the top of this pyramid are Andy's vocals. Still strong and impressive, despite the passage of years. Songs that deserve special attention here are the opening "Songs of Steel", followed by "Odin's Ravens" (proud representant of the album!), "Arya" (yes, the heroine of the song is none else than Arya Stark, one of the most important characters of the saga "The Song of Ice and Fire") and "Ancient Times". I recommend checking these songs as a foretaste of the whole record. I think that those who are susceptible to such a style will be completely hooked. As a bonus, 3 songs from the first 3 albums of the group were added, recorded again for this occasion: "Priest of Evil", "Rats in the Attic" and "Stronger than Heaven". They were recorded in the current style of the band, without original dirt and a slight dose of ominousness. Some may whine that this is not the same and just a waste of time. Well, personally, I really like what they did with them here.
What can I say, the album has gripped me (maybe that's why I'm not very objective, hehe). I had almost the same incredibly positive feelings when once discovering the albums "Legacy of Kings" by Hammerfall or Pictures' "Eternal Dark". A great record by veterans of the scene who haven't said the last word yet! Totally recommended!
