In the Woods - A Return to the Isle of Men (Karmageddon Media 2005)

In the Woods... Jeden z tych norweskich zespołów, które w ramach Black Metalowej sztuki weszły w rejony Pogaństwa, tematyki związanej z mitami, pięknem i tajemniczością natury. Wraz z takimi grupami jak Fleurety oraz Ulver wiedli w tej kwestii prym w połowie lat 90-tych, przechodząc później w inne muzyczne rejony, porzucając w sporym stopniu Black Metalowe granie, jakie towarzyszyło im na początku.
"Isle of Men" to drugie demo In the Woods, wypuszczone przez zespół w tym samym co pierwsze, 1993 roku. Zespół przedstawił tu oryginalny, surowy BM z echami folku, ambientu oraz innych gatunków Metalu. W tamtym czasie było to na norweskiej scenie novum - no może z wyjątkiem Enslaved oraz Helheim, które silnie nawiązywały do nordyckiej mitologii i kultury, ale były odrobinę mniej zróżnicowane kompozycyjnie niż omawiana grupa. Do tych drugich In the Woods było bardzo podobne, jeżeli chodzi o barwę i manierę wokalną - zajadły, wyraźny, wrzaskliwy wokal. Z taką różnicą że, i tu można nawiązać do Ulver, obecne były również na demie czyste wokale, recytacje. "Isle of Men", jak na demo, mogło pochwalić się całkiem niezłym brzmieniem. Oferowało Black Metal wciąż mroczny i surowy, jednakże kreujący już nie diabelskie, a nostalgiczne, naznaczone piętnem przeszłości pejzaże. Pełne zarazem skrytego majestatu, jak  i posępności. Wszystko to okolone pogańskim pierwiastkiem. W muzyce In the Woods przewijały się również elementy Doom Metalu/ Death Metalu (chociażby w "Creations of an Ancient Shape") oraz znaczne wykorzystanie potencjału, jakie dawały klawisze, zarówno w budowaniu klimatu, jak i nadawaniu utworom przestrzenności.
W ramach ciekawostki warto wspomnieć, iż zespół nie posiada żadnych zdjęć z czasów demówek i pierwszej płyty. Zawsze słali do zinów w ramach promocji zdjęcia lasów, skandynawskiej przyrody, co podobno irytowało nieco autorów pism. To w sumie sporo mówi o zespole i jego twórczości.
"Isle of Men" z całą pewnością było w swoim czasie demem mocno się wyróżniającym i mającym znaczący wpływ na rozwijającą się scenę i wykorzystywanie nowych rozwiązań w ramach Black Metalu, czy po prostu ekstremalnego grania. O czym warto wspomnieć to fakt, iż In the Woods było pierwszym zespołem, który zaczął używać terminu "Pagan Metal" w odniesieniu do swojej twórczości. "Isle of Men" to materiał, który zestarzał się bardzo dobrze i wciąż można czerpać sporo satysfakcji z obcowania z nim. Jak dla mnie to jedno z lepszych dem, jakie wydała na świat norweska scena.
Pisząc niniejszy tekst, bazowałem na reedycji zatytułowanej "A Return to the Isle of Men", wydanej przez Karmageddon Media w 2005 roku, zawierającej, poza oryginalnym demem, 3 dodatkowe, niepublikowane wcześniej utwory. Ta konkretna reedycja była jeszcze później wznawiana przez Hammerheart Records.

In the Woods ... One of those Norwegian bands that, as a part of Black Metal art, entered the areas of Paganism, topics related to myths, beauty and mystery of nature. Together with groups such as Fleurety and Ulver, they took the lead in this aesthetics in the mid-90s, later moving to other musical directions, largely abandoning the Black Metal that accompanied them at the beginning.
"Isle of Men" is the second demo of In the Woods, released by the band in the same year as the first, 1993. The band presented here an original, raw BM with echoes of folk, ambient and other genres of Metal. At that time it was a novelty on the Norwegian scene - except for maybe Enslaved and Helheim, which strongly referred to Norse mythology and culture, but were slightly less diverse in composition than the group mentioned. In comparison to Helheim, In the Woods was very similar in terms of timbre and vocal manner - a fierce, clear, screaming one. With such a difference that, and here you can refer to Ulver, clean vocals and recitations were also present on the demo. "Isle of Men", as for a demo, has a pretty good sound. It offered Black Metal still dark and raw, but creating no more devilish, but nostalgic atmosphere, marked by the landscapes of the past. Full of hidden majesty and gloom. All this is surrounded by a pagan element. The music of In the Woods also featured elements of Doom Metal / Death Metal (for ex. "Creations of an Ancient Shape") and significant use of the potential offered by the keyboards, both in building the climate and giving the spaciousness to the compositions.
As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that the band does not have any photos from the time of their demos and the first album. They always sent photos of forests, Scandinavian nature to zines and promotion, which apparently irritated some of the writers. That says a lot about the band and their art.
"Isle of Men" certainly was, in its time, a demo that stood out strongly and had a significant impact on the development of the scene and the use of new solutions as a part of Black Metal, or simply extreme stuff. What is worth mentioning, is the fact that In the Woods was the first band to use the term "Pagan Metal" in reference to their work. "Isle of Men" is a material that has aged very well and you can still enjoy it a lot. For me, it's one of the best demos the Norwegian scene has given birth to.
When writing this text, I was basing on the reissue entitled "A Return to the Isle of Men", published by Karmageddon Media in 2005, containing, in addition to the original demo, 3 bonus, unpublished songs. This particular version was later reissued by Hammerheart Records.
