Hermodr - Tidens Tand (Wolfspell Records 2022)

Nie jest nowością, że szwedzki Hermodr jest projektem bardzo płodnym. To jeden z tych zespołów, które w ramach black metalu mogą pochwalić się naprawdę bogatą dyskografią. Raft tworzy muzykę Hermodr w całości sam i niemal co roku wypuszcza nowy album, lub przynajmniej kilka EPek lub kompilacji. Słychać, że czerpie on sporo inspiracji z twórczości Burzum, Summoning i stoi ramię w ramię z równie kreatywnymi zespołami tworzącymi atmosferyczny black metal, jak Kalmankantaja, Eldamar, Lustre, Spell of Dark czy Nyktophilia. To wszystko kontynuowane jest na nowej płycie "Tidens Tand". Muzyka na tym albumie to istny, lity pejzaż dźwięków malujących przestrzenie wypełnione pięknem, majestatem, acz również mrokiem i tajemniczością otaczającej nas natury (nie bez przyczyn każde wydawnictwo Hermodr zdobią takie, a nie inne okładki). Utwory płyną jeden za drugim, budując klimat tak charakterystyczny dla tego zespołu. Są nastrojowe, utrzymane w wolnych i średnich tempach, czasem mniej lub bardziej oszczędne w w formie, ale wciąż bogate w emocje, nastrój i niesamowite, nostalgiczne/refleksyjne melodie. Dodatkowo, poza lekko wampirycznym wokalem Rafna, usłyszymy też żeńskie wokale, urozmaicające tu i ówdzie niektóre kompozycje. Mimowolnie przypomniały mi trochę to, co działo się na płycie "The Stargate" Mortiis, ale nie ma tu ich aż tyle i nie są aż tak, nazwijmy to, nachalne. Proporcje zostały zachowane, nie usłyszymy ich w każdym utworze. Wszystko ma tu swoje miejsce i zadanie. Cóż, ja wracam do ponownego słuchania "Tidens Tand", a wam szczerze polecam sięgnięcie po ten krążek. Kawał pięknej muzy!

It is not new that Swedish Hermodr is a very prolific project. This is one of those black metal bands that can boast of a really rich discography. Raft creates Hermodr's music entirely by himself and almost every year releases a new album, or at least a few EPs or compilations. You can hear that he draws a lot of inspiration from the works of Burzum, Summoning and stands shoulder to shoulder with equally creative bands creating atmospheric black metal, such as Kalmankantaja, Eldamar, Lustre, Spell of Dark or Nyktophilia. All this is continued on the new album "Tidens Tand". The music on this album is a real, solid landscape of sounds painting spaces filled with beauty, majesty, but also with darkness and mystery of the nature that surrounds us (not without reason, every Hermodr release is decorated with such and not other covers). The songs flow one after the another, building the atmosphere so characteristic of this band. They are romantic, slow and medium tempos, sometimes more or less thrifty in form, but still rich in emotions, mood and amazing, nostalgic/reflective melodies. In addition, apart from Raft's slightly vampiric vocals, we will also hear female ones, diversifying some compositions here and there. They involuntarily reminded me a bit of what happened on the album "The Stargate" by Mortiis, but there aren't that many of them here and they are not so, let's call it, intrusive. The proportions were kept, we won't hear them in every track. Everything has its place and purpose here. Well, I am going back to listening to "Tidens Tand" again, and I sincerely recommend you to reach for this album. A piece of beautiful music!

Ogłaszam plebiscyt na najbardziej obskurny, brudny, bluźnierczy i posępny materiał roku 2022 jednocześnie go kończąc i wyłaniając zwycięzcę - Ohydę. Ohyda to nowy zespół powołany przez dobrze znany w podziemiu duet, jakim jest Bloodwhip oraz Diabolizer. Do pełni składu Panowie dobrali wokalistę Necheshetriona (Blackphlegm, Halo of Miasma) i układanka zakończona. Owa nieświęta trójca powołuje do życia EP "Ohyda Spustoszenia" (hej, czy przypadkiem angielska wersja tytułu nie jest celowa - "Abomintion of Desolation"?). Czego można spodziewać się od muzyków tworzących takie zespoły, jak Moloch Letalis, Mordhell, Goathrone, Morbid Winds czy Zmora? A no tego, co w oldschoolowym, surowym metalu najlepsze! "Ohyda Spustoszenia" trwa 23 minuty i jest to metal, black metal, który wypełza do słuchacza z najgłębszych piwnic i ocieka wszystkim, co złe i skalane. Wolne i średnie riffy napędzają posępną, pełną grozy grobową atmosferę w miarowy rytm bębnów Diabolizera, a opętańcze, zawodzące wokale dopełniają dzieła. Do tego dostajemy również polskie teksty, także utwory nabierają jeszcze większego wyrazu i klimatu. Ohyda nie powiela muzyki granej przez jakikolwiek zespół jej twórców, ale zawierając różne ich cząstki przedstawia możliwie najbardziej obskurną ich formę. Wychodzi z tego piekielnie dobra, muzyczna bestia. Czekam na pełen album!

This unholy trinity brings to life the EP "Ohyda Spustoszenia" (hey, is the english version of this title "Abomination of Desolation" a coincidence?). What can you expect from musicians forming such bands as Moloch Letalis, Mordhell, Goathrone, Morbid Winds or Zmora? Everything that is best in oldschool, raw metal! "Ohyda Spustoszenia" lasts 23 minutes and is metal, black metal that crawls into the listener from the deepest cellars and oozes all that is evil and tainted. The slow and medium riffs fuel the gloomy, eerie mortuary atmosphere to the steady beat of the Diabolizer's drums. The haunted, wailing vocals complete the piece. We also get Polish lyrics, and the songs gain even more expression and atmosphere. Ohyda does not reproduce the music played by any band of its creators, but by containing their various particles, it presents the most obscure form of them as possible. It turns out to be a hell of a good musical beast. I'm waiting for the full-length album!

Kalmankantaja - Metsauhri (Wolfspell Records 2022)

Kalmankantaja jest niezwykle płodnym zespołem. Każdego roku raczy nas średnio trzema wydawnictwami. Nie zawsze jest to fizyczny nośnik, ale w większości tak. Nie znam całości ich dyskografii, przyznaję, a zaledwie ostatnie ich materiały. Ich muzyką zacząłem się nieco interesować dopiero w ubiegłym roku, a do szerszej eksploracji popchnął mnie dopiero wydany w styczniu "Metsauhri", który trafił do mnie wraz z pocztą niemal zaraz po premierze. Album w pierwszej kolejności skojarzył mi się z dawną twórczością Burzum. Ma bardzo undergroundowy i nostalgiczny klimat. Są w nim spore echa klasyków w postaci "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" oraz "Filosofem", a nawet "For All Tid" Dimmu Borgir z tym zacięciem do tęsknych melodii. Atmosfera budowana jest tutaj w bardzo podobny sposób, są te znakomite klawiszowe tła i melancholijne melodie. Wokal też ma ten efekt przytłumionego megafonu, jak właśnie na "Filosofem". Utwory utrzymane są w średnich i wolnych tempach. Dzięki temu całość materiału spójnie płynie przez całą długość płyty budując jeden muzyczny pejzaż. Mimowolnie, słuchając "Metsauhri", widzę przed oczyma skandynawskie ostępy w interpretacji Theodora Kittelsena. Okładka płyty, choć stworzona przez kogoś innego (Hellish Razor), swą estetyką zdaje się nieco nawiązywać do twórczości przed chwilą wspomnianego artysty. I żeby było jasne, Kalmankantaja nie jest tu klonem Burzum, ani żadnego podobnego zespołu. Na w swój własny sposób eksploruje i tworzy w tej estetyce i podobnym brzmieniu i wychodzi im to znakomicie. Słyszałem już klony twórczości Varga, ale ta płyta klonem nie jest. Mamy tu długie, majestatyczne utwory, które piszą swoją własną historię i potrafią niezaprzeczalnie wciągnąć słuchacza w swą opowieść. Bardzo dobry i pełen klimatu materiał!

Kalmankantaja is an extremely productive band. Each year, they treats us with an average of three releases. It's not always a physical issue, but mostly it is. I do not know all of their discography, I admit, but only the last of their materials. I started to get interested in their music a bit more only in the last year, and I was pushed to explore more with the arrival "Metsauhri", which came to me with the mail almost immediately after its premiere in January. First of all, the album reminded me of the former works of Burzum. It has a very underground and nostalgic atmosphere. There are many echoes of the classics in the form of "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" and "Filosofem", and even "For All Tid" by Dimmu Borgir with this verve to longing melodies. The atmosphere is built here in a very similar way, there are excellent keyboard backgrounds and melancholic melodies. The vocals also have this muffled megaphone effect, just like on "Filosofem". The tracks are kept in medium and slow tempos. Thanks to this, the entire material flows coherently along the entire length of the album, building one musical landscape. Involuntarily, while listening to "Metsauhri", I can see the Scandinavian backwoods in the interpretation by Theodor Kittelsen. The cover of the album, although created by someone else (Hellish Razor), with its aesthetics seems to refer a bit to the work of the aforementioned artist. And to be clear, Kalmankantaja is not a clone of Burzum or any other similar band. They explore and create in this aesthetics and similar sound in their own way, and they do it brilliantly. I've heard clones of Varg's works, but this album is not a clone. We have long, majestic pieces that write their own story and can undeniably draw the listener into their depth. Very good material full of great atmosphere!

Vaino - Metsanpeitto (Wolfspell Records 2022)

Wreszcie pierwsza tegoroczna nowość! I jest to debiut młodej black metalowej hordy z Finalandii - Vaino. Grupa porusza się po rejonach surowego, agresywnego, acz lekko melodyjnego black metalu, który ma w sobie coś również z brzmień rodem z Norwegii. Oczywiście czasów debiutów i wszelkiej maści demówek. Wraz z pierwszym odsłuchem skojarzyło mi się momentalnie ze starym Burzum z czasów dwóch pierwszych płyt, trochę pierwszym EP i debiutem Kampfar. Sporo jest też w tym estetyki, którą posiadają ich koledzy po fachu z Kalmankantaja, I Myrkri, Hermodr itd. Nie jest to oczywiście aż tak toporne jak dema z lat 90., ale widać inspiracje riffami i klimatem tamtych nagrań. Chęcią utrzymania pewnej relacji z charakterem tamtych materiałów. "Metsanpeitto" to kolejny przykład na to, że inspiracje dawną sceną i starym przepisem na skandynawski black metal rosną stale w siłę i coraz więcej grup z podziemia chce tamte brzmienia kultywować, a nie podążać ścieżką taniego przepisu na tę muzykę, o wymuskanym brzmieniu ukierunkowanym na sukces komercyjny. Ta muzyka rządzi się swoimi prawami i jest wynikiem pasji i chęci tworzenia, musi towarzyszyć jej ponadmuzyczna aura i odpowiedni klimat. Panowie z Vaino zmierzają w tym kierunku wraz ze swoim debiutem. Jest tu wszystko, czego trzeba w temacie, a okładka albumu mówi niemal wszystko na temat jego zawartości - leśne ostępy, posępność, chłód, nostalgia. To black metal dla starych wyjadaczy. With the first listening, I immediately associated what I have heard with the old Burzum from the period of the first two albums, a bit of the first EP and the debut of Kampfar. There is also a lot of aesthetics in it, which their colleagues from Kalmankantaja, I Myrkri, Hermodr, etc. represent. Of course, it is not as raw, obscure as demos from the 90s, but you can see inspiration from riffs and the atmosphere of those recordings. There is a desire to maintain a certain relationship with the nature of those materials. "Metsanpeitto" is another example that the inspirations from the old scene and the old recipe for Scandinavian black metal that are constantly growing in strength and more and more underground groups want to cultivate those sounds, and not follow the path of a cheap recipe for this music, with a polished sound aimed at commercial success. This music has its own rules and is the result of passion and willingness to create, it must be accompanied by an above-musical aura and an appropriate atmosphere. The gentlemen from Vaino are heading in this direction with their debut. There is everything you need in the subject here, and the cover of the album says almost everything about its content - grim forest, gloom, coldness, nostalgia. It's black metal for oldschool enthusiasts. The wheel is not invented here, but you can see a creation of another interesting one.

I Myrkri - Bag Skyggernes Slor (Wolfspell Records 2021)

Black metalu siłą rzeczy najlepiej słucha się zimą, gdy za oknem tnie lodowaty wiatr, którego ostatnio nie brakuje. I Myrkri uderza z kolejną płytą zostawiającą swoje dwa poprzednie pełne wydawnictwa daleko w tyle pod względem kompozycji i klimatu. Utwory na "Bag Skyggernes Slor" są surowe, przesiąknięte chłodem (nawet są sample jakby żywcem z burzy śnieżnej), a jednocześnie mają w sobie sporo nostalgicznych, posępnych melodii. Brzmienie materiału, poza otwierającym go intrem, wszelkiej maści klawiszowymi wstawkami, instrumentalnym, wręcz dungeon synthowym "Nattehvaelv", jakie na nim znajdziemy, jest jakby przytłumione, trochę swą estetyką trąci taśmą demo, ale ten zabieg ma swój urok i pasuje do tej płyty. Nowy album I Myrkri ma coś w sobie z norweskiego zimna w brzmieniu (coś ala Darkthrone z czasów "Under a Funeral Moon"), estetyki fińskiej sceny spod znaku wczesnego Warmoon Lord, Satanic Warmaster oraz tego, czego możemy posłuchać u chociażby Paysage d'Hiver. Bardzo fajna mieszanka, która trafia w mój gust. Płytę można śmiało zaliczyć do tych najbardziej udanych, które pojawiły się w ubiegłym roku. Ma wszystko to, co powinien posiadać klimatyczny black metal. Płyta zostanie już ze mną na dobre - to chyba idealna rekomendacja, a i dzięki niej bardzo chętnie rozejrzę się za 7'', którą zespół wydał wcześniej, a której jeszcze nie słuchałem.

And Myrkri hits with another album that leaves its two previous full releases far behind in terms of composition and atmosphere. The songs on "Bag Skyggernes Slor" are raw, saturated with cold (they are even samples like taken alive from a snowstorm), and at the same time have a lot of nostalgic, gloomy melodies. The sound of the material, apart from the intro that opens it, all kinds of keyboard inserts, instrumental, even dungeon synth "Nattehvaelv" that we can find on it, is somewhat muffled, a bit of a demo tape with its aesthetics, but this procedure has its charm and suits this album. The new album by I Myrkri has something of the Norwegian cold sound (something like Darkthrone from the times of "Under a Funeral Moon"), the aesthetics of the Finnish scene represented by Warmoon Lord, Satanic Warmaster and something that connects them with Paysage d'Hiver . A very nice mix that fits my taste. The album can be safely classified as the most successful among last year's releases. It has everything that an atmospheric black metal should have. The album will stay with me for good - this is probably a perfect recommendation, and thanks to it I will be happy to look around for the 7 '' that the band released earlier, and which I haven't listened to yet.

Nyctophilia - Weltschmerz (Wolfspell Records 2021)

Nyctophilię zaliczam już do tej samej ligi i rodziny black metalowych wykonawców, do jakich należy Evilfeast, Vargrav czy Warmoon Lord. Podobnie jak wymienieni koledzy po fachu, zespół prowadzony przez Griefa tworzy solidny, zakorzeniony w latach 90. black metal z gatunku tych, w których nie brakło zarówno złowieszczych riffów, wampirycznych wokali, ale również melodii i klawiszy. "Weltschmerz" oceniam jako najlepszy jak do tej pory materiał, jaki wyszedł sygnowany nazwą Nyctophilia. Zawarto na nim pokaźną dawkę klimatu, nostalgicznej, wręcz refleksyjnej atmosfery. Black metalowe motywy, tutaj zdają się przeważać średnie tempa, przeplatają się ze zwolnieniami, w których muzyka cichnie, snuje się w tle jak mgła, towarzyszą jej sample z odgłosami natury, jak ma to miejsce w chociażby w "Zatracony w Księżycowym Blasku", by zaraz przejść w energiczny, podniosły motyw. W "Na Zapomnianym Szlaku" też mamy taki zabieg, ale tutaj fragment przeradza się w kawałek naprawdę solidnego dungeon synthu spod znaku starego Mortiisa. Aż autentycznie przypomniała mi się utwór "Reisene til Grotter og Odemarker" i video do niego. Ech, to były czasy. Zauważalna jest również przestrzenność materiału, który ma pewną dawkę echa, bardzo fajnie to wybrzmiewa. Brzmienie płyty też zdaje się być bardziej wyraziste, klarowne, niż w przypadku poprzednich wydawnictw. Muzyka na "Weltschmerz" płynie niczym nocny bezkres uruchamiając tryby wyobraźni słuchacza. Tym, dla których w black metalu najistotniejszy jest klimat, atmosfera bezkresnych przestrzeni skąpanych w mroku nocy, ten album jest na liście absolutnych musów do sprawdzenia. Piękny materiał!

I rate "Weltschmerz" as the best material that came out under the name Nyctophilia so far. It contains a large dose of climate, nostalgic emotions, even reflective atmosphere. Black metal guitars, here seem to prevail medium tempo, intertwined with slowdowns, in which the music fades away, wanders in the background like a mist, accompanied by samples with sounds of nature, as is the case in, for example, "Zatracony w Księżycowym Blasku", to you are about to go into an energetic, sublime theme. In "Na Zapomnianym Szlaku" we also have such a composition, but here the fragment turns into a piece of a really solid dungeon synth under the sign of the old Mortiis. It reminds on "Reisene til Grotter og Odemarker" and the video to it. Those were the days. The spaciousness of the material is also noticeable, with a certain dose of echo, it sounds very nice. The sound of the album also seems to be more expressive and clear than in the case of previous releases. Music on "Weltschmerz" flowing like the endless night, activating the modes of the listener's imagination. For those for whom the most important thing in black metal is the atmosphere, the climate of endless spaces bathed in the darkness of the night, this album is on the list of absolute must-have's. Beautiful material!

Beyond Time - Through the Vastness of the Universe (Werewolf Promotion/Wolfspell Records 2021)

Jeszcze nie mogę się pozbierać po odsłuchu tej płyty... Co za kawał niesamowitej sztuki! Tak potężnego i jednocześnie tk przestrzennego grania chyba nigdy wcześniej nie słyszałem. I ten astralny klimat... Coś wspaniałego! Oczywiście można znaleźć płyty, które oscylują wokół takich klimatów, ale żadna nie była w stanie aż tak mnie oczarować. Poważnie, myślałem, że w tym roku w black metalu (w sumie jest to coś więcej niż tylko black metal) nic nie będzie w stanie mnie tak powalić, zaskoczyć, że co już chciałem usłyszeć, to usłyszałem. Ale nie, o nie! Beyond Time swoją debiutancką płytą przeskoczył wszystko o jeden poziom - twórczo, aranżacyjnie, warsztatowo. To jest inna liga. Zespół połączył na tej płycie ściany gitar, nawałnicę perkusji, piękne klawiszowe melodie i pasaże. W sumie to klawisze i syntezatory są tu jednym z najważniejszych elementów, instrumentami wiodącym, tworzącym ten bezkres przestrzeni muzycznej, jaka została tu przedstawiona. Wokal, perkusja i gitary to tylko solidny fundament, na którym powstaje całość tego materiału, wszystko to, co się na nim dzieje. Muzyka na "Through the Vastness of the Universe" sprawia wrażenie jakby egzystowała ponad czasem i przestrzenią, płynęła w niekończący się bezkres gwiazd i mroku. Towarzyszy temu oryginalna mistyczna atmosfera, nadając jej odpowiednich emocji. To dźwiękowy pomnik wszechświata, to faktycznie podróż przez jego pustkę i niezmierzoną przestrzeń. "Through the Vastness of the Universe" bezapelacyjnie zaliczam do absolutnych płytowych musów tego roku! Musicie tego posłuchać!

I still can't organise myself after listening to this album ... What an amazing piece of art! I have probably never heard such a powerful and spatial soundat the same time. And this astral atmosphere ... Something wonderful! Of course, you can find albums that oscillate around such climates, but none of them was able to charm me that much. Seriously, I thought that this year in black metal (it's more than just black metal) nothing would be able to knock me down so hard, to surprise me that much. I thought I had already heard what I was expecting to hear. But no, oh no! Beyond Time with thier debut album beat everything - in terms of creativity, arrangement and craftsmanship. This is a different league. On this album, the band combined walls of guitars, a storm of drums, beautiful keyboard melodies and passages. All in all, it is the keys and synthesizers that are one of the most important elements here, the leading instruments, creating this endless musical space that has been presented here. Vocals, drums and guitars are just a solid foundation on which all this material is created, everything that is happening on it. The music on "Through the Vastness of the Universe" gives the impression that it exists above time and space, flowting in as unmeasured endlessness of stars and darkness. It is accompanied by an original mystical atmosphere, giving it the right emotions. It is a sonic monument to the universe, it is in fact a journey through its emptiness and vast space. "Through the Vastness of the Universe" is one of this year's absolute must-haves! You have to check it out!

Saxtorph - When Depression Devastates the Dreams (Wolfspell Records 2021)

Ostatnim i autentycznie dobrym materiałem z zakresu DSBM, jakiego słuchałem był Fadheit. Jakoś nie trafiam na zbyt wiele płyt w tym nurcie, ale ostatnio wpadł mi w ręce album duńskiego Saxtorph i zasakująco przypadł mi do gustu. Cóż, depressive suicidal black metal nigdy nie był dla mnie tym, co przekazuje w swej estetyce. Nigdy nie ogarniały mnie słuchając go jakieś negatywne emocje, wręcz przeciwnie. Bardzo często ta muzyka jest pełna świetnej atmosfery, klimatu, nostalgii i nawet teksty pełne depresji i myśli samobójczych nie były w stanie tego zmienić. Tak samo lubię na przykład "Selvmord" Vond czy wczesne Shinning lub Xasthur, dla mnie to kapitalne materiały. A że dla mnie szczególnie ważny jest właśnie wyjątkowy klimat i budowanie atmosfery, to tym bardziej. "When Depression Devastates the Dreams" jest właśnie taką płytą. Ten album kładzie nacisk właśnie na swoją wyjątkową aurę posępnej, smutnej, acz w swych dźwiękach mrocznie pięknej, opowieści. Nie ma tu karkołomnych temp, blastów. Black metal w wykonaniu Saxtorph majestatycznie płynie utrzymując się w wolnych i średnich riffach, melodiach. Jest w nim coś mantrycznego, rytualnego. Każdy kolejnych utwór hipnotyzuje i wciąga w swoją bezkresną, czarną otchłań. Elementy klawiszowe nadają kompozycjom dodatkowego tragizmu, niczym z horroru lub teatru grozy. The last and genuinely good material I listened to in the DSBM range was Fadheit. Somehow I don't explore too many albums in this sub-genre, but recently I got my hands on the Danish Saxtorph newest album and I really enjoyed it. Well, depressive suicidal black metal has never been for me what it conveys in its aesthetics. I was never overwhelmed by any negative emotions when I listened to it, on the contrary. Very often this music is full of great atmosphere, climate, nostalgia and even lyrics fulfilled with depression and suicidal thoughts weren't able to change that. I also like "Selvmord" by Vond, early Shinning or Xasthur for example, for me these are great materials. And since the unique climate and building the atmosphere are particularly important to me, it is even more. "When Depression Devastates the Dreams" is just such an album. It emphasizes precisely its unique aura of a gloomy, sad, yet darkly beautiful story in its sounds. There are no breakneck tempos or blasts here. Black metal performed by Saxtorph flows majestically, keeping itself within slow and medium tempo riffs and melodies. There is something mantric, ritual about it. Each subsequent composition hypnotizes and draws you into its endless, black abyss. The keyboard elements give the tracks additional tragedy feeling, like from a horror movie or play. When it comes to albums that are based on the atmosphere, its construction, instead of flooding us with guitar galloping, Saxtorph is one of the best releases of this year. Recommend!

Moonthoth - Zmora (Wolfspell Records 2020)

Historia Moonthoth sięga niemal roku 2000, kiedy to grupa powstała pod nazwą Nigra Missa. Po pewnym czasie przekształciła się w projekt jednoosobowy pod nazwą Moonthoth. Po wydaniu kilku dem zespół zniknął na dziesięć lat z polskiej sceny. W 2020 powrócił ze swoim pierwszym pełnym albumem. Muzyka Moonthoth to przede wszystkim Black Metal, ale oscylujący wokół wielu inspiracji, korzystający z wielu rozwiązań. Nocturnal, stojący za całością twórczą Moonthoth, przedstawił na "Zmorze" nie tylko pogańskie oblicze tej sztuki (w większości za sprawą tekstów opartych na demonologii i mitologii słowiańskiej), ale również odniósł się do wielu oblicz Black Metalu, jakie kształtowały się przez lata trwania sceny. Jest tu nieznaczna epickość w stylu Summoning czy Caladan Brood, symfonika i odrobina melodyjności reprezentowanej przez stare Limbonic Art (jest tego mniej niż na demach, ale wciąż da się te wpływy zauważyć), odrobina surowości i nacisku na partię gitar w stylu, jaki były widoczny chociażby na pierwszych płytach Burzum, kończąc na folkowych elementach znanych z "Bergtatt" oraz "Kveldssanger" Ulver. Warto też zaznaczyć, że jest to pierwszy materiał Moonthoth w języku polskim. Jednym słowem: nie sposób się tu nudzić.

Uważam, że "Zmora" spełniła swoje zadanie jako powrót Moonthoth na scenę oraz przypomnienie o tym zespole. Sprawdziła się również jako debiut. Album kipi od pomysłów, jest świeży i wciągający. Prowadzi słuchacza różnymi ścieżkami. Nocturnal umiejętnie korzysta z dobrodziejstw, jakie oferuje Black Metal, tworząc dzieło mające szansę odbić się echem na podziemnej scenie. Ja bym sobie tego życzył, ta płyta na to zasługuje.

The history of Moonthoth dates back to almost 2000, when the group was formed under the name Nigra Missa. After some time it evolved into a one-man project and changed the name to Moonthoth. After releasing several demos, the band disappeared from the Polish scene for ten years. In 2020 it returned with its first full-length album. Music of Moonthoth is primarily Black Metal, but oscillating around many inspirations, using many solutions. Nocturnal, who stands behind the creative whole of the project, presented not only the pagan face of this art on "Zmora" (mostly due to lyrics based on Slavic demonology and mythology), but also referred to many faces of Black Metal that have evolved over the years. There is a slight epicness in the style of Summoning or Caladan Brood, a symphony and a bit of melody represented by old Limbonic Art (there is less of it than on demos, but you can still see these influences), a bit of austerity and emphasis on the guitar part in the style that was visible e.g. on the first Burzum records, ending with folk elements known from "Bergtatt" and "Kveldssanger" by Ulver. It is also worth noticing that this is the first Moonthoth material in Polish. In a word, you can't get bored here.

I think "Zmora" did its job as Moonthoth's return to the scene and as a reminder of this band. But also as a debut. The album is full of ideas, it is fresh and addictive. Guides the listener through different paths. Nocturnal skillfully uses the benefits of Black Metal, creating a work that has a chance to make its mark on the underground scene. I would really like the things to go that way, this album deserves it.

Iku-Turso - Pakana (Wolfspell Records 2020)

Ostatnio fińska scena black metalowa nie przestaje mnie pozytywnie zaskakiwać. Co chwila natrafiam na jakiś nowy album, przy którym zostaję na dłużej lub który w jakiś sposób robi na mnie wrażenie. Ostatnio był to chociażby Werwolf, Warmoon Lord, Faustian Pact, Goats of Doom (o tych dwóch będę jeszcze Wam pisał), a teraz Iku-Turso. Przyznam, że ich poprzedni krążek (a konkretnie EP) "Storm Over Isengard" niezbyt mnie zaciekawił i przeszedł u mnie bez echa, niczego z niego nie zapamiętałem. Kolejny pełny album, omawiany tutaj "Pakana", to już klasa sama w sobie! Niesamowity skok jakościowy i kompozycyjny. Przynajmniej ja mam takie wrażenie. Płyta jest może odrobinę bardziej pogańska niż poprzednie materiały, bardziej "leśna", ale to tylko działa na jej plus. Usłyszycie tu wpływy starych płyt Satyricon (niektóre melodie i chóry), Limbonic Art, Emperor (klawisze), Ulver (elementy folkowe) czy Burzum lub Windir (brzmienie gitar i riffy). Pomimo tych norweskich naleciałości płyta jest wciąż typowo fińskim dziełem, ma ten unikalnych klimat i złowieszczość, jaką charakteryzują się tamtejsze zespoły. To jest ten sam poziom rozpoznawalności, jaki towarzyszy Satanic Warmaster, Thy Serpent, Moonsorrow czy Hornie. "Pakana" wprowadza nas w świat mroku, melancholii, fińskiej natury, czuje się w niej atmosferę tamtejszych lasów i jezior, szamaństwa i mistycyzmu. Wszystko to wrzucone jest w lekko surowe brzmienie i rozbudowane, przestrzenne utwory. Ta płyta to bardzo duży krok dla zespołu i ma szansę przenieść ich w grono najlepszych ekip ich sceny. Mi album spodobał się na tyle, że z pewnością wyląduje w mojej pierwszej piątce najlepszych wydawnictw tego roku. Ogromny szacunek dla Iku-Turso i wydawcy, czyli naszego rodzimego Wolfspell Records!

Recently, the Finnish black metal scene does not stop to surprise me positively. Every now and then I come across a new album with which I stay for longer or which somehow impresses me. Recently it was Werwolf, Warmoon Lord, Faustian Pact, Goats of Doom (about these two I still need to write about), and now Iku-Turso. I admit that their previous album (EP, to be precise) "Storm Over Isengard" did not interest me very much and went unnoticed in my case, I did not remember anything from it. The next full album, discussed here - "Pakana", is already a class in itself! An amazing qualitative and compositional leap. At least I have such an impression. The album is maybe a little more pagan than the previous materials, more "forest-like", but this only works in favour of it. Here you will hear influences of old Satyricon records (some melodies and choirs), Limbonic Art, Emperor (keyboards), Ulver (folk elements), Burzum or Windir (guitars and riffs). Despite these Norwegian influences, the album is still a typical Finnish stuff, it has this unique atmosphere and ominous character that can be found only among Finnish bands. This is the same level of recognition that accompanies Satanic Warmaster, Thy Serpent, Moonsorrow or Horna. "Pakana" introduces us to the world of darkness, melancholy, Finnish nature, you can feel the atmosphere of the local forests and lakes, shamanism and mysticism. All this is thrown into a slightly raw sound and extensive, spatial compositions. This album is a very big step for the band and has a chance to move them to the group of the best acts of their scene. I like the album so much that it will definitely land among my top five best releases of this year. Huge respect for Iku-Turso and the publisher - our Polish Wolfspell Records!

Vosbud - Almannagja (Wolfspell Records 2019)

Po raz pierwszy piszę tutaj o materiale pochodzącym z Islandii. Vosbud to jednoosobowy black metalowy projekt mierzący w jego przestrzenne, majestatyczne rejony, wciąż mieszając to z odrobiną surowości i chaosu. Album "Almannagja" można postrzegać jako chęć przekazania patosu i nietypowego krajobrazu Islandii, natury tej wyspy, gdzie łączy się wulkaniczna groza z pięknem krajobrazu poprzez właśnie Black Metal. Może nie ma tu specjalnie zapadających w pamięć motywów, riffy i kompozycje bliższe są przeciętności w temacie niż czemuś wyraźnie się wyróżniającemu, ale jak na debiut jest to dobry, solidny album z predyspozycjami na coś znacznie lepszego. Z pewnością takim jasnym punktem jest jego atmosfera i wykorzystanie do tego najlepszych środków w ramach black metalowej sztuki (chociażby odrobina melodyjnego podejścia podana w formie ścian gitar); połączenie wspomnianych już na początku cech z mrokiem i chaosem tego gatunku. W tych dźwiękach walczą ze sobą światło i ciemność, dzień i noc, natura w swym łagodnym obliczu, jak i w tym władczym i destrukcyjnym. Warto też wspomnieć spójność płyty i stylistyczną konsekwencję. To czyni ją zapowiedzią czegoś wyjątkowego, początek jest obiecujący i liczę, że Vosbud dalej będzie kontynuował swą islandzką sagę, racząc nas kolejną dawką swej muzyki w jeszcze ciekawszej odsłonie. Na razie jest dobrze i z czystym sumieniem zachęcam do zapoznania się z albumem "Almannagja". Większość z Was powinien on zaciekawić.

I am writing about the material from Iceland for the first time here. Vosbud is a one-man black metal project aimed at its spatial, majestic areas, still mixing it with a bit of rawness and chaos. The album "Almannagja" can be seen as a desire to convey the pathos and the unusual landscape of Iceland, the nature of this island, where volcanic horror connects with the beauty of the landscape through Black Metal. Maybe there are no especially memorable themes, riffs and compositions are closer to mediocrity in the subject rather than something distinctive, but for the debut it is a good, solid album with predispositions for something much better. Certainly such a bright spot is its atmosphere and the use of the best means in the context of black metal art (even a bit of melodic approach given in the form of guitar walls); the combination of the features mentioned at the beginning with the darkness and chaos of the genre. In these sounds there is a struggle between light and darkness, day and night, there is nature in its gentle form, as well as in its imperious and destructive one. It is also worth to mention the album's consequence and stylistic consistency. This makes it an announcement of something special, the beginning is promising and I hope that Vosbud will continue its Icelandic saga with a new dose of its music in an even more interesting way. For now, it's good and with a clear conscience I encourage you to check the album "Almannagja". Most of you should get interested.

Schattenfall - Das Verderben EP (Redefining Darkness Records/Wolfspell Records 2020)

Po dwóch długograjach i chwili oddechu z kolejnym materiałem atakuje niemiecki Schattenfall. EP "Das Verderben" to krótki (niecałe 24 minuty), acz wciągający materiał. Mamy tu Black Metal utrzymany w wolniejszych tempach (są oczywiście okazyjne przyspieszenia, ale jednak wolne/średnie tu dominują) z naciskiem na mroczną, niepokojącą, czasem depresyjną atmosferę wciągającą słuchacza w swoją otchłań. Coś w sam raz dla fanów przede wszystkim Bethlehem, ale też Drudkh czy nawet Lunar Aurora. Są tu trzy rozbudowane kompozycje, które nie spiesząc się budują bardzo fajny, momentami mantryczno-hipnotyczny klimat. Mamy tu również dość chwytliwe riffy. Niby z pozoru proste, powtarzające się, ale mające tutaj swój urok. Miejscami mam wrażenie, że słyszę stary dobry Moonspell z czasów "Wolfheart". Trochę podobnie zbudowany jest tam słynny "Alma Mater". Wokal na albumie jest oczywiście szorstki, skrzekliwy, czasem przechodzący w nico czystszy, jakby chóralny. Bardzo dobrze współgra z oprawą muzyczną. Całości słucha się wyśmienicie. Przyznam się bez bicia, że poprzednich płyt Schattenfall nie słyszałem, ale ta EPka bardzo zachęciła mnie, żeby te zaległości nadrobić. Jeżeli nie znacie, wam również polecam. Na tę chwilę sięgajcie po "Das Verderben", bo warto!

After two longplays and a moment of breath, German Schattenfall attacks with another material. EP "Das Verderben" is a short (less than 24 minutes), but addictive stuff. Black Metal we have here is kept at slower pace (there are of course occasional faster parts, but slow/mid ones dominate here) with emphasis on the dark, disturbing, sometimes depressive atmosphere drawing the listener into its abyss. Something just right for fans of primarily Bethlehem, but also Drudkh or even Lunar Aurora. There are three expanded compositions here that, without rushing, build a very cool, sometimes mantric and hypnotic atmosphere. We also have quite catchy riffs here. Apparently simple, repetitive, but having their charm. In some places I have the impression that I hear the good old Moonspell from the period of "Wolfheart". The famous "Alma Mater" is built in a similar way at some point. The vocals on the album are obviously rough, screeching, sometimes turning into a cleaner, as if choral. It goes very well with the music. The whole EP turns of really great while listening. I admit that I haven't heard previous Schattenfall albums, but this EP encouraged me to catch up. If you don't know it, I recommend it to you. For now, reach for "Das Verderben" because it's worth it!

Warmoon Lord/Vultyrium - Pure Cold Impurity SPLIT (Wolfspell Records 2020)

Minął rok i mamy kolejny materiał od Warmoon Lord, a i przy okazji debiutującego na scenie Vultyrium. Ten pierwszy udowadnia swoją wielkość i formę z debiutu, tyle że jest jakby agresywniej, brzmienie jest nieco mniej piwniczne, a i więcej tu symfoniki w tle - coś w stylu wczesnego Emperor czy Limbonic Art. Cztery numery i każdy bezbłędny! Mimo tych drobnych zmian, Warmoon Lord wciąż pozostaje tym samym tworem, z tożsamością z debiutu i nieprzerwanie hołduje klasyce Black Metalu lat 90. Tutaj nie ma wątpliwości! Aż nie mogę się doczekać kolejnego krążka.
Co się tyczy Vultyrium, szturmuje scenę trzema kompozycjami utrzymanymi w klimacie starego Darkthrone i Satyricon, okraszonego wokalami, które nieodzownie kojarzą się z tymi w wykonaniu Ihsahna czy Werwolfa z Satanic Warmaster. Są bardzo wampiryczne, z dodanym lekkim pogłosem. No klasa, i tak jak w przypadku Warmoon Lord, przypominają się dawne dzieje, stare płyty. Co trzeba przyznać obu zespołom, ich muzyka jest jakby żywcem wyjęta z tamtych lat. Gdyby nie było wiadomo, że to nowe projekty, to serio, można by to wziąć za jakieś nieodkryte perły starego, skandynawskiego Black Metalu.
Reasumując, split ten jest, jak dla mnie, bez skazy. Nie zawiodłem się. Zespoły zostały zestawione w punkt i jest to znakomite czekadło na kolejne albumy obu hord, w przypadku Vultyrium - pierwszego pełniaka. Krótko i zwięźle - must have, jeżeli chodzi o obecne Black Metalowe nowości!

A year has passed and we have another material from Warmoon Lord, and at the same time Vultyrium's scene debut. The first one proves its position and form from the first album, but it is more aggressive, the sound is slightly less basement-like, and there are more symphonics in the background - something like early Emperor or Limbonic Art. Four tracks and each one is perfect! Despite these minor changes, Warmoon Lord still remains the same creation, with its identity from the debut and constantly paying homage to the Black Metal classics of the '90s. There is no doubt here! I can't wait for the next album.
As for Vultyrium, it storms the stage with three compositions kept in the atmosphere of old Darkthrone and Satyricon, enchanted with vocals that are inevitably associated with those performed by Ihsahn or Werwolf from Satanic Warmaster. They are very vampyric, with a slight reverb added. Well, class, and as in the case of Warmoon Lord, it recalls the old days, old records. What you have to admit to both bands, their music is as if taken out of those years. If it was not known that these are new projects, seriously, it could have been taken for some undiscovered pearls of old, Scandinavian Black Metal.
To sum up, this split is, for me, flawless. I was not disappointed. The bands have been put together well and this is a great wait for the next albums of both hordes, in the case of Vultyrium - the first full-length. Short and concise - must-have when it comes to current Black Metal news!
