Kat - Without Looking Back (Pure Steel Records 2019)

Po 14 latach od wydania "Mind Cannibals" Piotr Luczyk powraca z nową płytą Kat. Trochę przyszło poczekać i to co dostaliśmy jest jak dla mnie przynajmniej satysfakcjonujące, jeżeli nie bardzo dobre - to już moja czysto subiektywna ocena. Zdaję sobie doskonale sprawę z tego jak "Without Looking Back" odebrało środowisko metalowe i krytyka, że opinie są mocno niepochlebne, a płytkę miesza się, mówiąc dosadnie, z błotem. Nie bardzo wiem dlaczego, serio. Odkładając na bok wszystkie te animozje między muzykami jakie mają miejsce w ciągu ostatnich kilku/kilkunastu lat, a skupiając się na samej tworzonej przez nich sztuce, to najnowszemu krążkowi Kat nie można zbyt wiele zarzucić, byłoby to szukanie dziury w całym. Pada zarzut, że to już nie ten Kat, a kompletnie obcy twór. Cóż, dobrze wszyscy wiemy, że muzyka ewoluuje, często nie tkwi bezczynnie w jednym punkcie, chyba że taki zabieg jest świadomy i celowy. Kat pod dowództwem Piotra faktycznie nie patrzy za siebie, a odchodząc od uprzedniego Thrashu, zmierza w kierunku klasycznego Heavy Metalu lat 80. i początku 90., zmieszanego z elementami rockowej klasyki. Miejscami nawet Bluesa, ale to tylko delikatne wstawki. Można by powiedzieć, że jest to poniekąd powrót do korzeni Kat, muzyki, od której ten zespół zaczynał. To już kompletnie nie to, co proponowali na poprzedniej płycie czy na jakiejkolwiek innej. Słychać tu nawiązania do Scorpions, Accept, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, może nawet Iron Maiden. Płyta fajnie chodzi w obrębie tej stylistyki, balansując na krawędzi między Metalem a Rockiem, jak niegdyś płyty "Heavy Metal World" TSA czy "Smak Ciszy" Turbo. Mamy tu elementy balladowe (taki "Wild" lub "The Promised Land", na przykład), hammondy nawiązujące do Purpli, a z drugiej strony mocne, energiczne numery jak "Black Night in My Chair", "Flying Fire" czy "Walls of Whispers" (to mój faworyt z tej płyty), które są już mocno osadzone w Heavy Metalu. Najjaśniejszy punkt to oczywiście partie gitar i solówki. Kunsztu Piotrowi odmówić w tej materii nie można, byłoby to co najmniej nie na miejscu. Wszystko zespala naprawdę dobre brzmienie i produkcja na przyzwoitym poziomie.
Z rzeczy, które do końca do mnie tu nie przemówiły, to trochę za długie kompozycje. Miejscami spotyka się pewne instrumentalne dłużyzny, które lepiej sprawdziłyby się na żywo niż na albumie. Odrobinę krótsze lepiej by działały, płyta miałaby lepszy flow. Z godziny zrobić 45 minut i album nie straciłby na dynamice, stałby się bardziej skondensowany. I druga rzecz, ale to już drobiazg -  powtórzenia słowa "Fire" w aż trzech tytułach utworów. Trochę to zaburza tracklistę. Pomyślałem sobie w żarcie, że na koniec brakuje tylko coveru "Fight Fire with Fire" Metalliki. Także poza tym nie mam innych uwag. Jak dla mnie płyta bardzo na plus, udany, nośny album, do którego chętnie będę wracał. Pasuje mi ta jego inność i nie przeszkadza mi, że tu nadal widnieje logo Kat. To po prostu nowy Kat, nowa wizja, nowe pomysły. Tyle. Biorąc tę płytę w dłonie, wiedziałem, czego się spodziewać i nie patrzyłem na nią przez pryzmat dawnych dokonań, a raczej jak na nowy twór i rozdział w historii zespołu.
Na koniec chciałbym jeszcze poruszyć temat okładki. Spotkałem się z zarzutami o niekonsekwencję w stosunku do tytułu. Cóż, w końcu postać Kata z pierwszego planu odwraca się na pięcie od spowitych pożogą trumien z "Oddechu Wymarłych Światów", klatki z "Ballad" i nagrobka z "Róż Miłości..." i wraz ze swym toporem i ściętymi łbami rusza w siną dal. Zatem ten obraz jak najbardziej idzie w parze z tytułem "Without Looking Back" i śmiało zaliczam go do udanych.
Tyle ode mnie. Mi się album bardzo spodobał, bardziej, niż się tego na początku spodziewałem. No, ale i podszedłem do niego nieco inaczej. Skłamałbym, gdybym chciał silić się tu na mocno krytyczne wnioski, z jakimi się w wielu innych recenzjach zetknąłem. Ja ten album jak najbardziej polecam, do mnie przemówił!

14 years after the release of Mind Cannibals, Piotr Luczyk returns with a new Kat album. It was a bit of a wait and what we got is at least satisfying, if not very good - that's my purely subjective opinion. I am well aware of reactions on "Without Looking Back" from the metal environment and criticism, that the opinions are unflattering and that the album is, to put it bluntly, lambasted. I don't know why, really. Putting aside all these animosities between musicians that have taken place in the last few/dozen years, and focusing on the art they created themselves, the latest Kat album cannot be accused of being bad, it would be nitpicking. There is an accusation that this is not Kat anymore, but a completely different creation. Well, we all know that music evolves, often it doesn't stay the same all the time, unless it is an intentional and deliberate approach. Kat under Piotr's command does not actually look back and moves away from the previous Thrash Metal, the band is heading towards the classic Heavy Metal of the 80s and early 90s, mixed with elements of classic rock. In some places even Blues, but these are only slight inserts. One could say that it is somewhat a return to the roots of Kat, the music with which this band began. It's completely not what they proposed on the previous album, or on any other. There are references to Scorpions, Accept, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, maybe even Iron Maiden. The record works well in this style, balancing between Metal and Rock, like once TSA did on their "Heavy Metal World" or Turbo on their "Smak Ciszy". We have ballad elements here (such as "Wild" or "The Promised Land", for example), hammonds referring to Purple, and on the other hand strong, energetic tracks such as "Black Night in My Chair", "Flying Fire" or "Walls of Whispers "(this is my favorite one from this album), which are already firmly embedded in Heavy Metal. The brightest points are of course guitar and solo parts. Piotr's artistry cannot be denied in this matter, negating it would be at least inappropriate. Everything is finished with a really good sound and production at a decent level.
Some of the things that didn't appeal to me here, are a bit too long compositions. Here and there are certain instrumental longueurs that would work better live than on the album. A little shorter would work better, the disc would have a better flow. Make 45 minutes from an hour and the album would not lose dynamics, it would become more condensed. And the second thing, but that's a trifle, the repetition of the word "Fire" in as many as three song titles. It disrupts the tracklist a bit. I thought to myself that at the end, only the cover of "Fight Fire with Fire" by Metallica was missing. Well, I have no other comments. As for me, the album defends itself well and I will gladly come back to it. Its otherness appeals to me and I don't mind that the Kat logo still appears here. It's just a new Kat, a new vision, new ideas. That's all. Taking this CD in my hands, I knew what to expect and I did not look at it through the prism of previous achievements, but rather as a new creation and chapter in the band's history.
Finally, I would like to mention the cover art. It has been accused of inconsistency between it and the title. Well, in the end, the figure of the executioner from the foreground turns away on his heel from the coffins from "Oddech Wymarłych Światów", the cage from "Ballady" and the tombstone from "Róże Miłości..." (all set in flames) and he goes off with his axe and beheaded heads. Therefore, this picture goes hand in hand with the title "Without Looking Back" and I confidently rank it as successful.
That'a all from me. I like the album very much, more than I expected at first. Well, I approached it a bit differently. I would be lying if I wanted to make strong critical conclusions that I have encountered in many other reviews. I highly recommend this album, it almost completely appealed to me!
