Darkthrone- Old Star (Peaceville Records 2019)

Po trzech latach Darkthrone powraca do nas z kolejną płytą. Nie mogę powiedzieć, że na nią nie czekałem, każde kolejne wydawnictwo duetu Fenriz/ Nocturno Culto to konkretna dawka ciekawości cóż to panowie znów wysmażą w kwestii oldschoolowego grania. Jak tak sobie teraz przypominam, to chyba nigdy mnie nie zawiedli, od lat totalnie kupuję to co robią, na jaką ścieżkę wkroczyli wraz z "The Cult is Alive", a nawet już "Sardonic Wrath". Co już pragnę zaznaczyć, "Old Star" to cios znacznie silniejszy i bardziej esencjonalny niż "Arctic Thunder". Może na początku nie powaliły mnie jakoś szczególnie same kompozycje podczas próbnego odsłuchu, ale po odpaleniu materiału z płyty wszystko zagrało jak trzeba i album jak dla mnie sporo zyskał. Przede wszystkim płyta potężnie brzmi, soczyście, ładnie chodzi tutaj bas i perkusja. To właśnie w tym tkwi siła tego krążka. Wracając do samych numerów, to dobrze słychać tu totalny odjazd w lata 80-te i oldschoolowy Black Metal pierwszej fali, ale nie jest to tutaj trzonem materiału. Dominują nieskończone pokłady wczesnego Celtic Frost (to już niemal tradycja), amerykańskiego Pentagram oraz Candlemass. Mamy tu też bardzo fajne akcenty w powoli kroczącym utworze tytułowym nawiązujące do najlepszych Metalowych ballad wspomnianych lat 80-tych. Tak oto dostaliśmy chyba najcięższe strukturowo wydawnictwo Darkthrone od wielu lat, acz niepozbawione nowych inspiracji i klimatu. Oczywiście nie jest tak, że mamy tu tylko wolne i średnie tempa, jest i trochę galopady jaką mieliśmy na poprzednich krążkach i sporo dobrych, nośnych riffów. Zdążyłem się już naczytać i nasłuchać jak to nie ściągnęli tego riffu od tego zespołu, a jeszcze innego od tamtego, że brzydko się zestarzeli. To szukanie problemów na siłę. Wiadomym jest, że nie da się cały czas w tej kwestii błyszczeć, czasem bazuje się na gotowych już patentach nadając im nową formę, brzmienie, charakter czy klimat. To robi Darkthrone i uważam robią to nad wyraz dobrze. Mają swój własny, wyrobiony, charakterystyczny styl. Autentycznie czekam na każdy kolejny ich album. Może bez wypieków, ale wciąż. "Old Star" mnie nie zawiódł mimo trudnego początku. Dla mnie to nadal są herosi w swoim graniu i to już nigdy się nie zmieni, a takich płyt jak niniejsza życzę sobie nadal!

After three years, Darkthrone returns to us with another record. I cannot say I have not waited for it, each subsequent release of the duo Fenriz / Nocturno Culto goes with a specific dose of curiosity from me, what these gentlemen will serve again in their oldschool art. As I recall now, they probably never disappointed me, I've been completely into everything they've been doing for years, what path they've chosen starting with "The Cult is Alive" or even "Sardonic Wrath". What I want to point out, "Old Star" is a blow that is much stronger and more intense than the "Arctic Thunder". Maybe at the beginning, during the pre-listening the compositions did not appeal to me that much, but after playing the material from the physical copy everything turned out as it should be and the album gained a lot. First of all, it sounds powerful, heavy, with a significant work of bass and drums. This is the strength of this record. Returning to the compositions themselves, it's good to hear a total tribute to the 80's and old-school Black Metal of the first wave, but this is not the core of the material here. The endless inspirations taken from early Celtic Frost (almost traditionally), the American Pentagram and Candlemass dominates here. We also have very nice elements in the title track, referring to the best Metal ballads of the mentioned 80's. This is how we got the heaviest Darkthrone's release for many years, though not devoid of new inspiration and climate. Of course, it's not like we have only slow and medium pace stuff, there are some fast ones compared to what we had on previous albums and a lot of good, load-bearing riffs. I have already read and listened to how they did not steal this riff from this band, and yet another from that, that they got old in not exactly good way. It's searching for problems at a push. It is known that it is impossible to always shine in this matter, sometimes it is all based on already-made patents, giving them a new form, sound, character and atmosphere. So does Darkthrone and I think they do it extremely well. They have their own, characteristic, unique way of playing. I really look forward to any new releases by them. Maybe without a lot of excitement, but still. "Old Star" did not disappoint me despite the difficult beginning. For me, they are still heroes in their style and it will never change. I still want them to record such albums as this one!
