Tribulation - Down Below (Century Media 2018)

Rok temu pojawił się czwarty album w dorobku Tribulation - "Down Below". I jak sobie Szwedzi na nim poczynają? Odpowiedź jest tu dosyć prosta i myślę, że większość osób podzieli moją opinię. "Down Below" jest naturalną kontynuacją "The Children of the Night", pogłębieniem obranej wtedy formuły i drugim krokiem w jej wnętrze. Teraz tak - czy to dobrze, czy źle? Cóż, tutaj można się spierać. Z jednej strony mamy konsekwencję i ugruntowanie stylu, co jest bardzo na plus. Mamy przynajmniej cztery naprawdę porywające numery. Nie ukrywam, że jestem zadowolony ze ścieżki, którą obrali. Ich notabene bardzo oryginalny Death Metal z pierwszej płyty mógłby, pomimo ogromnego potencjału, gdzieś po czasie przepaść, a tak ruszyli w kierunku jeszcze bardziej nietuzinkowym, totalnie własnym. Połączyli najlepsze elementy tzw. Dark Metalu oraz resztek swoich Death Metalowych początków (chodzi tu przede wszystkim o wokal, bez którego nie byłoby to to samo), posypując całość klasycznymi elementami gotyckiego grania, zarówno metalowej i rockowej formy. Na bogato i odważnie, tego nie można im odmówić (chociaż czasem balansują na granicy kiczu, ale w ostateczności wychodzą obronną ręką). Ważne, że płyta nie jest od swojej poprzedniczki gorsza, jest równie dobra, trzyma poziom i serwuje kilka naprawdę zapadających w pamięć momentów - "The Lament", "Nightbound", "Lacrimosa" oraz oryginalny, majestatyczny "The World". Owe kompozycje już wpisały się na stałe do setlisty Tribulation i grane są na większości koncertów. Atmosfera płyty też robi swoje, mroczna, niepokojąca, odwołująca się w swej estetyce do dawnych czarno-białych horrorów z "Nosferatu" na czele.

Druga strona medalu to fakt, że potencjalnie może brakować tu bardziej zauważalnego kroku (chociaż "The World" teoretycznie takowym jest) naprzód, jakiegoś konkretnego zaskoczenia. Płytę można śmiało potraktować jako drugą część "The Children of the Night" (brzmienie i konstrukcja utworów jest niemal bliźniacza), co dla wielu odbiorców może oznaczać stagnację, brak pomysłu, powtarzalność. Jednak ja uważam, że zespół podjął tu właściwy krok i nagrał płytę, która umocniła ich muzyczne "ja", zdefiniowała brzmienie. Jest jakby zwieńczeniem stopniowych przemian stylistycznych,  jakie zespół przechodził na swoich poprzednich płytach. Uważam, że właśnie w takim kontekście należy ją rozpatrywać. Potencjalny minus zaczyna być wtedy zaletą "Down Below".

Na Tribulation zacząłem zwracać uwagę już na poziomie debiutu, bardzo polubiłem po trzecim albumie, ale to wraz z omawianym tu materiałem i zobaczeniem zespołu na żywo stałem się ich ogromnym fanem. Nikt nie gra jak oni; grupa jest niepodrabialna, ma własny, oryginalny styl i umiejętność tworzenia wyjątkowego klimatu. "Down Below" może być śmiało ich wizytówką i dziełem stojącym na równi z przełomowym dla nich "The Children of the Night". Czekam na kolejny ich materiał i nawet nie będę oponował, gdyby dalej pozostało to w tym samym schemacie, bo on autentycznie się sprawdza. Niemniej liczę na kolejny, ciekawy krok naprzód. Tymczasem ogromnie ten album polecam!

A year ago, the fourth album in Tribulation's discography was released - "Down Below". And how did the Swedes manage to accomplish their goal? The answer here is quite simple and I think that most people will share my opinion. "Down Below" is a natural continuation of "The Children of the Night", a deepening of the formula chosen at the time and a second step into its interior. Now, is it good or bad? Well, here you can argue. On one hand, we have consistency and polishing the style, which is an advantage. We have at least four really exciting tracks. I must admit that I am happy with the path they have chosen. Their very original Death Metal from the first album could, despite the enormous potential, disappear somewhere after a while, and so they moved in an even more unusual, totally their own direction. They combined the best elements of the so-called Dark Metal and the remnants of their Death Metal beginnings (this is primarily about the vocals without which it would not be the same), sprinkling the whole with classic elements of gothic stuff, in its both metal and rock form. In a rich and bold manner, that can't be denied (although sometimes they balance on the verge of kitsch, but eventually they come out unscathed). It is important that the album is not worse than its predecessor, it is equally good, keeps the level and serves some really memorable moments - "The Lament", "Nightbound", "Lacrimosa" and the original, majestic "The World". These compositions are already permanently inscribed in the Tribulation setlist and are played at most concerts. The album's atmosphere also makes a lot here - dark, disturbing, referring in its aesthetics to the old black and white horrors with "Nosferatu" at the forefront.
The other side of the coin is the fact that there may potentially be a more noticeable step forward (although "The World" theoretically is), some specific surprise. The album can be safely treated as the second part of "The Children of the Night" (the sound and construction of the songs are almost identical), which for many recipients may mean stagnation, lack of idea, repetition. However, I think that the band has taken the right step here and recorded an album that strengthened their musical "I", defined the sound. It is like the end of the gradual stylistic changes that the band underwent on their previous albums. I believe that it is in this context that it should be considered. The potential disadvantage then becomes the "Down Below" advantage.
I started to pay attention to Tribulation at the debut level, I really liked it after the third album, but it was along with the material discussed here and seeing the band live that made me become their huge fan. No one plays like them, the group is one-of-a-kind, has its own original style and the ability to create a unique atmosphere. "Down Below" can be easily their showcase and work on a par with their groundbreaking "The Children of the Night". I am waiting for their next material and I will not even object if it still stays in the same pattern, because it works really well. Nevertheless, I am counting on another interesting step forward. In the meantime, I highly recommend this album!
