Celtic Frost - Into the Pandemonium (Nosie Records 1987/2017)

Gdy spojrzycie w prawy górny róg obrazu, to zobaczycie część użytą na „Into the Pandemonium”.

English translation:

Strange, for its time, and very experimental, but intriguing album. Certainly the fans of the group after the albums "Morbid Tales" and "To Mega Therion" did not expect to hear such a thing. It was a kind of revolution! Nevertheless, this proves that Celtic Frost was not afraid to try new things, new solutions, generally speaking musical explorations. After the considerable success of "To Mega Therion" and the tours accompanying the promotion of this material, one could expect they would stay on this road, but it didn't happen. Tom and Martin had other plans.
Released in 1987, "Into the Pandaemonium" is a very diverse album, which at the same time can encourage with its "otherness" and richness, or on the contrary, discourage because of the departure from the previously chosen path. Here we have songs that are a mixture of Hard Rock and Thrash, such as "I Won't Dance" or the opening "Mexican Radio" from the repertoire of Wall of Voodoo, some typical Celtic Frost stuff from previous albums ("Inner Sanctum" or the great "Babylon Fell") and a lot of symphonic-electronic attempts with "One in Their Pride" and "Tristesses de la Luna" (no metal sounds at all!) at the forefront. It's just a real mine of variety!
"Into the Pandaemonium" was an album that (at the time it was released) was a pioneering work, pathing the way for certain concepts. At that time, nobody combined symphonic elements with metal music, no band employed an orchestra to work on the album (Manowar did in the '88). It was undoubtedly a risky but ambitious undertaking. Noise Records was not satisfied with the band's plans and it was not without serious tensions, but it didn't change that much.
Certainly, this album had a significant impact on many bands, such as the Japanese Sigh. They threw the elements contained on "Into the Pandemonium" onto a broader ground, exploited it in such a way that those additions became a permanent, important element of the compositions.
The cover of the album also deserves a few words, as it also differed from the previously chosen aesthetics and concepts. It is decorated with a part of the work of Hieronimous Bosch (specifically the one reflecting his vision of hell), a Dutch sixteenth-century painter, entitled "Garden of Earthly Delights". When you look at the upper right corner of the image, you will see the part used on "Into the Pandaemonium". For the first time, it was nothing typically blasphemous or unquestionably devilish, as it was on previous albums and in Hellhammer.
I admit that "Into the Pandaemonium", after a while, became my favorite material among the achievements of Celtic Frost; from time to time I want to rediscover and explore it again. These type of records gain a lot over time; it turns out that their role was and is important, they are works that always deserve enormous respect. Do I recommend it? Of course! For those who do not know this album yet (I don't know if there will be such people, but it is possible) it may seem demanding, a bit inaccessible, but it really has a lot to offer.
Below I present a really great reissue of this album prepared by Noise/BMG, which was released in 2017. In addition to the album itself, we get a solid digibook with an extensive booklet containing liner notes and a lot of previously unpublished photographs. I consider this edition to be the best one from the ones already issued on CD.

Morbid Winds - The Ruin of Forgotten Desolation (Morbid Chapel Records 2020)

"The Ruin of Forgotten Desolation" to - obok materiału Dead Dog's Howl - najciekawsze demo, jakie słyszałem w tym roku. Weszło z marszu i bez popity! Coś jakby synteza "Under a Funeral Moon" z "Wrath of the Tyrant" / "Moon in the Scorpio", tyle że w demówkowym brzmieniu. Szczere, bezkompromisowe i porywające granie w temacie. Warto!

English translation:

"The Ruin of Forgotten Desolation", next to Dead Dog's Howl stuff, is the most interesting demo I've heard this year. It just appealed to me instantly! Morbid Winds, despite the rawness and slightly basement-like sound, served a fantastic journey into the depths of the early 90s scene, or simply into areas that once built extreme art, but with new energy, their own vision and an amazing sense of the climate accompanying it. These dirty, but catchy and memorable riffs are joined by great raw drums (respect to both Bloodwhip and Diabolizer) and keyboard backgrounds in the style of very early Emperor and Limbonic Art demos. Something like a synthesis of "Under a Funeral Moon" with "Wrath of the Tyrant" / "Moon in the Scorpio", but with a demo sound. Added to this are rough Cryptic Lust vocals and we get Black Metal in the true sense of this word. Six compositions and over twenty minutes of playing, which has no right to get you bored or not catch an interest of underground metal fan and such style of Black Metal. There is simply no chance! And don't be fooled by the obscure cover. Maybe it proves that this stuff can lack good production - actually there's nothing extraordinary in this matter here (there doesn't have to be), and that the band doesn't really look for attention wherever they can. But that's the charm of it. Honest, uncompromising and thrilling stuff in the subject. Whoever does not have it, buy it, whoever did not listen to it, check it out! It's worth it!

Veneration - Thy Infernal (Fallen Temple 2020)

I to jest, proszę Was, właśnie taki przypadek!

English translation:

This is how another oldschool band emerges from the underground, one that by all means or foul and bravely moves forward, paying tribute to this more pre-Norwegian Black Metal. At the debut of this Indonesian act you will hear echoes of such groups as Beherit, Sarcofago, Mortuary Drape and Nifelheim. Therefore, it is something in contrast to the currently appearing novelties that revolve around strictly Scandinavian sounds in the subject. What I like is the fact that the group is not trying to get too much attention, it is somewhat anonymous. You won't find much information about them, nor their pages on the net. This gives their music a certain distance, if you want to listen to them you have to reach them yourself, it will not be served to you. Unless you come across a review like this one or so.
"Thy Infernal" is characterized by minimalism, negligible production, rawness and uncritical crush on the simplicity of the message. This is simply the purest old school Black Metal, no more, no less. But there is some primal strength in it, energy - even though it is a young wine, it tastes like a good old one. It was a nice idea to include the word "Infernal" in the title of each song, creating a peculiar concept. I am glad that from time to time I come across good bands that live for playing, for their passion, and the rest is not important to them. They do their own thing, release a record and if it is art that appeals to you, then you have to take a moment to reach it. And once you do, satisfaction is guaranteed. And this is, you guys, such a case!

Zatem koniec tych wstępów i tłumaczeń, do rzeczy.
Podbija to zwłaszcza tendencja Narrenwind do średnich i wolnych temp. Nawet te okazyjne klawisze, ambientowe naleciałości w stylu Burzum słyszalne w "Wietrze Głupców" dorzucone w taką estetykę to stosunkowo ciekawy zabieg i bardzo udany. No i teksty utworów.

English translation:

Narrenwind's debut is an album that I missed somewhere in the sheer volume of other materials; that I wanted to review since its release, but it hasn't happened yet. I want to make up for it now, the more that time is favorable. Finally, in two months, the next, third album by Evil and Klimohr will be out. So let's end these introductions and so on, to the point now.
What needs to be emphasized at the beginning is the fact that Narrenwind is a creature that does not respect the patterns, trends and tendencies in playing, especially within Black Metal. It goes his own path. It doesn't matter if it appeals to a hundred or several thousand people. Of course, there is a lot of later Bathory influences here. Sometimes you can recognize certain stuff, such as the one in the opening "Wydłużam Cień Boga Ciemności" or "Przemocą Wepchnięci w Istnienie", and this unique epicness and atmosphere. This is even emphasized more by Narrenwind's tendency to medium and slow tempos. Despite this, the band is thoroughly original, at least in my opinion. The composition, sound, aura of pensiveness and reflection around this music... Even these occasional keyboards, Burzum-like ambient influences heard in "Wiatr Głupców" added to such aesthetics are a relatively interesting procedure that turns out great. I have the impression that Narrenwind cannot be mistaken for any other band. They use elements from old times combining them with their own personal vision. An addition to this are Klimohr's vocals, which are also relatively recognizable. "Mojej Bolesnej Śnię Dobrą Śmierć" is a record that flows, lives its own life and spins its story slowly. It's like a good book. At first, an engaging, exciting prologue, then building a climate, drawing the listeners attention, then getting into the art's world, and finally a nostalgic epilogue in the form of melancholic "Nic". And the lyrics... As usual, they are not the most important part of work for me, but here they work equally with the music and are a very important element of the whole, adding a lot to the atmosphere of the album. A piece of truly phenomenal art that cannot go unnoticed or unappreciated. Such records create the history of the scene, you have to listen to them, know and remember them, period!

Thurthul - Fury of Ancient Race (Dark Omens Production 2020)

"Fury of Ancient Race" to również silne nawiązanie do lat 90., acz właśnie ukierunkowane bardziej w początki sceny i tzw. Pagan Black Metal. Nadaje to albumowi balansu, urozmaica go, dzięki czemu nie wieje tu nudą i ma on szansę wylądować w odtwarzaczu więcej niż raz. "Fury of Ancient Race" mogę z czystym sumieniem polecić każdemu, kto mocno siedzi przede wszystkim w pogańskim Black Metalu.

http://www.darkomens.pl/
https://www.facebook.com/Thurthul/
https://thurthul.bandcamp.com/album/fury-of-ancient-race

English version:

Another "traditional" material within Black Metal and another from Thurthul, but this time it is the full-length album of this project. Three distinctive features are combined here. A style that can be compared to Gorgoroth or Dark Funeral (very nice walls of guitars), a bit of melody plus a pagan element. Grief, known from Nyctophilia, stands behind Thurthul, where he touches the more depressing-melancholic face of Black Metal. "Fury of Ancient Race" is also a strong reference to the 90s, but just focused more on the beginnings of the scene and the so-called Pagan Black Metal. There is nothing new here, it works on well-known patents, except that they are combined in a slightly different way, giving a fresh effect. The album is not that much original, but it is a piece of good, skillful craft with a sense of climate and authentic awareness of the music played. You can also hear that it is stuff and sound loyal to underground aesthetics, which gives them a special atmosphere, typical for this kind of recordings. It is also worth noting that the album has two faces, more devilish and more pagan-melodic (it comes out especially when you compare the opening composition "Honor and Pride" with the title song). This gives the album balance, diversifies it, thanks to which there is no sign of boredom, so the CD has a chance to land in the player more than once. I can honestly recommend "Fury of Ancient Race" to anyone who enjoys Pagan Black Metal primarily.

Nurt Ognia - Nurt Ognia (Putrid Cult / Under the Sign of Garazel 2020)

Nurt Ognia to nowy projekt Upiora z Xarzebaal. No czyste zło i szaleństwo! Zachęcam do obczajenia!

English translation:

I don't expect many people to appreciate the phenomenon of this album. Nurt Ognia is a new project of Upiór known from Xarzebaal. On this material, he gives us music filled totally with chaos, sound of madness packed in a dingy, basement-like sound. Don't expect melodies, proper production or order here. It's not here! But there is a method, a method and all charm in it. Dirty, crackling guitars, raw drums in the background, possessed vocals are the domain of this album. You can also find occasional, atmospheric passages filled with echoes and single, peculiar sounds there. Pure evil and madness! Despite all this, you can also find interesting, tarry riffs in this infernal cauldron. The atmosphere here is unique. Cover without a logo, simple but powerful graphics, zero song titles or their content. "Nurt Ognia" is probably the most extreme piece of Black Metal I have heard so far. At the beginning it was Abruptum, then for a long time nothing, Revenge, Nyogthaeblisz, Xarzebaal, and now Nurt Ognia. If you like all these bands plus such groups as Havohej or Woods of Belial, then you have to give this album a chance. It is very inapproachable at first, but it gains with each listening and attention given to it. It is less than twenty-seven minutes which lead to the darkest, most perverted corners of Black Metal. For me it is a damn original work, honest to the core which spits in the face of any trends or correctness. I encourage you to check it out!

Nomad - Transmogrification (Partus) (Witching Hour Productions 2020)

Uwiódł mnie zwłaszcza utwór "The Graceful Abyss". Natomiast gitary Setha i wokal Waldka Twardowskiego - cóż, to jakość sama w sobie. Polecam tę płytę mocno!

English transaltion:

After a very long break, we have another Nomad album (its creating process dates back to 2014). Just like the previous albums somehow never really interested me (with the exception of "Transmigration of Consciousness"), I was not a dedicated fan of their somewhat technical and relatively complicated music, this album - to my surprise - appealed to me perfectly. Nomad music has always been accompanied by a certain complexity, twisted riffs, mantric melodies, and frequent tempo changes. It's all on "Transmogrification (Partus)". With the fact that this album, like no other, introduces us to some totally crazy reality. There is so much here that you can hardly focus on each of the elements. In addition, it has a unique, tribal atmosphere. It is also dark and psychedelic at the same time. Full of uncontrollable chaos. I have not heard something so intriguing and demanding in Death Metal for a long time. I was especially seduced by the song "The Graceful Abyss". It is incredibly spacious and its abyss sucks you in just from the start. There is even a distant echo of cosmic electronics that rises through its melody. Well, such a connotation. If I were to compare the music of Nomad from this album with any band, climate or character in any way, only Nocturnus comes to mind. First of all, for the vibes and unconventionality that both bands can be proud of. Nomad shows that it is an original creation, and the album "Transmogrification (Partus)" is another proof of this, they cannot be mistaken with anyone else. This is an album that probably will not charm immediately (although in my case it's happened), but I guarantee that it will gain with the next listening, it is necessary to give it a chance. It ripens like a good wine. If it encourages you, I will say that this time Inferno himself sat behind the drums, and I must say that he did a great job here. In case of Seth's guitars and Waldek Twardowski's vocals - well, it's quality in itself. I highly recommend this material!

P.S. As a bonus to the limited version, we have an alternative mix of "Tetramorph" EP. I don't really know why such move was made, but it's still a nice addition for fans.
