Necrophobic - Dawn of the Damned (Century Media 2020)

Czekało się na ten album, oj, czekało. Wreszcie mam chwilę, aby przysiąść i napisać o nim kilka słów. Nie powiem, oczekiwania wobec "Dawn of the Damned" były spore. Po niezwykle udanym "Mark of the Necrogram" ciężko, żeby było inaczej. Po powrocie Andersa Strokirka do zespołu, Necrophobic poczyna sobie nader dobrze, są w niesamowitej formie twórczej. "Dawn of the Damned" to dzieło bardzo spójne, koncepcyjne, którego należy słuchać jako jednej całości. No może z wyjątkiem "Devil's Spawn Attack" (gościnnie Schmier z Destruction na wokalu) i ewentualnie "Mirror Black", one mogą na spokojnie egzystować samodzielnie. To wyjaśnia wybranie ich jako singli promujących płytę - strzał w dziesiątkę. Reszta natomiast jest moim zdaniem litym tworem, którego nie należy rozdzielać. Może ta  płyta jest mniej "przebojowa" od poprzedniczki, ale na pewno są tu bardziej kompleksowe kompozycje. Mam wrażenie, że w jakiś sposób Necrophobic stworzyło swoje "A Night at the Opera", jakkolwiek by to nie brzmiało. Nadal jest melodyjnie, złowieszczo, materiał kipi energią, ale ma w sobie pewien pierwiastek, który daje wrażenie obcowania z dziełem bardzo ambitnym, na swój sposób wymagającym, czego nigdy wcześniej w kontekście Necrophobic nie odczułem aż tak wyraźnie jak tutaj. Płyta, moim zdaniem, ma również bardzo dopracowane brzmienie, pod tym względem to również najlepsze dzieło tego zespołu. "Dawn of the Damned" jest bez wątpienia pretendentem do płyty roku i albumem, który na dobre zagości wśród płyt wielokrotnie przeze mnie słuchanych, do których zawsze z przyjemnością będę wracał i odkrywał je na nowo. Myślę, że lepszej rekomendacji dać nie mogę.

I have been waiting for this album, yes, I have really been looking forward to it. Finally, I have a moment to sit down and write a few words about it. Indeed, expectations concerning "Dawn of the Damned" were high. After the extremely successful "Mark of the Necrogram", it's hard for it to be otherwise. After Anders Strokirk's return to the band, Necrophobic is doing very well, they are in an amazing creative form. "Dawn of the Damned" is a very coherent and conceptual work that should be listened to as one piece. Well, maybe except for "Devil's Spawn Attack" (guest appearance of Schmier from Destruction on vocals) and possibly "Mirror Black", they can easily exist independently. That explains choosing them as singles promoting the album - it hit the spot. The rest, in my opinion, is a solid structure that should not be separated. Maybe the album is less "hit-like" than its predecessor, but there are certainly more complex compositions here. I have a feeling that somehow Necrophobic created their "A Night at the Opera", however it may sound. It is still melodic, ominous, the material is bursting with energy, but it has an element in it that gives the impression of dealing with a very ambitious art, demanding in its own way, which I have never felt so clearly in the context of Necrophobic as it is here. The album, in my opinion, also has a very refined sound, in this aspect it is also the best work of this band. "Dawn of the Damned" is undoubtedly a contender for the album of the year and one that will stay among the albums that I have listened to many times, to which I will always be happy to come back to and rediscover. I think I cannot give a better recommendation.

The Initiation - Misanthropic Litany (Mara Production 2020)

Kolejna z płytowych nowości warta szczególnej uwagi. The Initiation to młoda rosyjska ekipa parająca się black metalem w stylu Watain czy Katharsis. Złowieszcze, bardzo energetyczne, pełne wściekłości, acz lekko melodyjne granie z odpowiednią, diabelską atmosferą. Przypomina mi w tym względzie również Lvcifyre, chociaż samo granie nieco inne. "Misanthropic Litany" to ich pierwszy pełny album. Jedynym poprzedzającym go materiałem była wydana w 2017 EPka "The Initiation". Koniec wstępu, przejdźmy do samego albumu. Podobnie jak to było w przypadku Slaughtbbath, o którym wam ostatnio pisałem, jest to jeden z tegorocznych wyziewów, który szczególnie mi się spodobał. Płyta zalatuje świeżością w temacie, pasją i fantastycznie brzmi. Rozkręcona na cały regulator kruszy ściany i zagotowuję wodę święconą we wszystkich pobliskich kościołach. Panowie ewidentnie znają się narzeczy i nagrali album naszpikowany wszystkim, co w black metalu zorientowanym na riffy i klimat najlepsze. Pomijając podobieństwa do dwóch zespołów wymienionych na początku, jest w tym także domieszka death metalu i odległe echa Dissection oraz Sacramentum. Tak, nie będzie błędu w tym stwierdzeniu. Jest to melodyjność właśnie z tych okolic. Płyta jest zróżnicowana, riffy i melodie na przemian przyspieszają i zwalniają, pojawiają się również bardzo chwytliwe, mantryczne zagrywki przy, których nóżka sama chodzi (końcówka "His Wolves, His Hearts"). Wyszła naprawdę świetna płyta, na którą warto wydać pieniądze. Za szlachetne wzorce, brzmienie, riffy, wokale - za całokształt (nawet okładkę)! Dla mnie ewidentnie jeden z wyróżniających się i najlepszych strzałów tego roku. Polecam!

Another from the new albums worth special attention. The Initiation is a young Russian band performing black metal in the style of Watain or Katharsis. Ominous, very energetic, full of rage, but slightly melodic playing with an appropriate, devilish atmosphere. It also reminds me of Lvcifyre in this aspect, although the music itself is slightly different. "Misanthropic Litany" is the band's first full-length album. The only material preceding it was the EP "The Initiation" released in 2017. End of introduction, let's move on to the album itself. As with Slaughtbbath, which I recently wrote you about, this is one of this year's fumes that I particularly liked. The album feels fresh, emanates with passion and sounds fantastic. Turned on at full volume, it crumbles walls and boil holy water in all nearby churches. The gentlemen are aware of the stuff they are creating and recorded an album full of everything that is the best in black metal oriented on riffs and atmosphere. Apart from the similarities to the two bands mentioned at the beginning, there is also an admixture of death metal and distant echoes of Dissection and Sacramentum. Yes, there will be no error in this statement. It is the melodiousness from this area. The album is varied, riffs and melodies alternately speed up and slow down, there are also very catchy, mantric passages that makes your feet move ("His Wolves, His Hearts" ending for ex.). A really great album that is worth spending money on. For noble patterns, sound, riffs, vocals - for the overall performance (even the cover)! For me, clearly one of the standout and best strikes of the year. Totally recommend!

Fadheit - Inhaling The Trauma (Putrid Cult 2020)

W tym roku Putrid Cult wypuszcza same ciekawe lub nawet arcyciekawe materiały, a o debiucie Fadheit warto tu wspomnieć w szczególności. "Inhaling the Trauma" to chyba pierwszy w katalogu Morgula tytuł korespondujący z tzw. depresyjnym samobójczym black metalem (DSBM). Jest to też dzieło relatywnie melodyjne, mimo swego ponurego i niepokojącego klimatu. A jak dobrze wiecie, takich płyt nie ma w katalogu Putrid Cult tak wiele. Cieszy zatem fakt, że i na taki album znalazło się miejsce. "Inhaling the Trauma" to black metal spod znaku takich zespołów jak Martwa Aura, Medico Peste, Mgła, ale w bardziej melodyjnej odsłonie (chociaż nie jestem do końca przekonany, czy to trafne określenie), odsłonie przepełnionej również nostalgią i melancholią. Z jednej strony mamy bardzo mocne teksty o przygnębiającym, refleksyjnym charakterze, zanurzone po uszy w depresyjnej tematyce, a z drugiej chwytliwe riffy i zapadające w pamięć gitarowe pasaże. Ma to również na swój sposób nutę przebojowości, a nawet patosu, z jakim zetknąłem się już przy płytach chociażby Batushki. Jakby tego było mało, są tu też subtelne echa polskiego black metalu sprzed dwóch dekad. Gdzieś tam słychać na przykład Sacrilegium. Jednym słowem - dostaliśmy dzieło kompleksowe, przepełnione masą pomysłów połączonych z niebagatelną atmosferą. Słucham tej płyty z przerwami już od dwóch tygodni i nie mam dość. W swojej niszy jest to jedno z najlepszych wydawnictw tego roku i pretendent do najlepszego debiutu. Gorąco polecam!

This year Putrid Cult releases only interesting or even extremely interesting materials, and the debut of Fadheit is worth mentioning here in particular. "Inhaling the Trauma" is probably the first title in Morgul's catalogue corresponding to the so-called depressive suicidal black metal (DSBM). It is also a relatively melodic work, despite its gloomy and disturbing atmosphere. And as you well know, there are not so many such albums in the Putrid Cult catalogue. Therefore, it's nice that there is a place for such a recird as well. "Inhaling the Trauma" is black metal in the vein of bands such as Martwa Aura, Medico Peste, Mgła, but in a more melodic version (although I'm not entirely sure if this is an accurate term), version also filled with nostalgia and melancholy. On the one hand, we have very strong lyrics with a depressing, reflective character, fulfilled with this kind of emotions, and on the other hand, catchy riffs and memorable guitar passages. It also has, in its own way, a hint of hitness, and even pathos, both of which I have already encountered on, for example, Batushka's releases. As if that was not enough, there are also subtle echoes of Polish black metal from two decades ago. Somewhere there you can hear Sacrilegium, for example. In a word, we got a comprehensive work, full of ideas combined with a considerable atmosphere. I've been listening to this album on and off for two weeks now and I can't get enough. In its niche, it is one of the best releases of the year and a contender for the best debut. I highly recommend it to you!

Slaughtbbath - Alchemical Warfare (Hells Headbangers 2019 / Old Temple 2020)

Za sprawą Old Temple doczekaliśmy się w tym roku polskiego wydania ubiegłorocznej płyty Slaughtbbath "Alchemical Warfare". Zespół jest już w podziemiu dobrze znany i wysoce szanowany. U siebie są w czołówce sceny. Nie ma co się dziwić, ich oldschoolowy death/black metal to granie z najwyższej półki. Jeżeli ktoś czytający nie słyszał o nich do tej pory, to jeżeli lubi klimaty bliskie Destroyer 666 lub Azarath, to nie mógł lepiej trafić. "Alchemical Warfare" to drugi pełny album tej chilijskiej ekipy i kolejny krok naprzód w bluźnierczej i bezkompromisowej metalowej sztuce. Debiut był świetny, ale dwójka to już najwyższa liga w temacie. Slaughtbbath podążają konsekwentnie obraną przez siebie drogą, serwując nam dziewięć brutalnych kompozycji składających się na ponad półgodzinny materiał. Przy takiej nawałnicy, a jednocześnie jakości nagrania, to w zupełności wystarcza. Dodatkowo zespół urozmaica swoje kompozycje drobnymi organowymi, czy też akustycznymi elementami. Nie brakuje też porywających solówek. Rozbudowany finałowy "Ascension to the Dragon's Throne" zdaje się tylko potwierdzać kunszt grupy, ich umiejętności techniczne i udowadniać, że czyste ekstremum nie jest tu jedynym celem. Już teraz mam ochotę wracać do tego materiału, a pierwsze z nim zetknięcie zaowocowało trzema odsłuchami z rzędu. Niesamowita płyta, którą polecam każdemu!

Thanks to Old Temple, this year we have the Polish release of the last year's Slaughtbbath "Alchemical Warfare" album. The band is already well known and highly respected in the underground. In Chile, they are at the forefront of the scene. No surprise, their old school death/black metal is top shelf music. If someone reading this has not heard about them so far, then if he likes stuff close to Destroyer 666 or Azarath, he could not find anything better. "Alchemical Warfare" is the second full-length album of this Chilean band and another step forward in blasphemous and uncompromising metal art. The debut was great, but number two is already a cream of the crop. Slaughtbbath are consistently following their chosen path, serving us nine brutal compositions in over half an hour of material. With such a storm and at the same time the quality of the recording, it is more than enough. Additionally, the band diversifies their compositions with small organ or acoustic elements. There are also ravishing solos. The extensive final "Ascension to the Dragon's Throne" seems to only confirm the artistry of the group, their technical skills and prove that pure extreme is not the only goal here. I already want to come back to this material, and the first contact with it resulted in three listeniengs in a row. Amazing album that I recommend to everyone!

DeathEpoch - Abysmal Invocation (Putrid Cult 2020)

Takiej płyty, mieszanki gatunków i stylów jeszcze nie było! Przynajmniej ja nie znam podobnego krążka. Ale zacznijmy od początku. DeathEpoch to wspólny projekt dowodzącego wytwórnią Putrid Cult Morgula, oraz Lorda K. (Nekkrofukk, Goathorne, Sacrificulus...). Pierwszy zajął się partiami gitar (niby tyle lat przerwy od gry na instrumencie, a poradził sobie świetnie) i basu, natomiast drugi zasiadł za garami i stanął za mikrofonem. Panowie pokusili się o bardzo nieszablonowy projekt łącząc ze sobą black/death/war metalową kanonadę, smoliste brzmienie, mocarne riffy i wokalne bluźnierstwo, dzikość ze sporą ilością ambientu oraz elektroniki. Wszystko to przeplata się ze sobą przez całą długość albumu. To trochę tak, jakby spotkały się ze sobą Mysticum, Archgoat, Beherit, Mz. 412 i, nie wiem, Brighter Death Now. Przyznajcie, że synteza mocno oryginalna, odważna, ale efekt powala! Powstał album, który ma zadatki na dzieło nie tylko kultowe, ale i przełomowe dla sceny undergroundowej. Odważny projekt, który moim zdaniem nie wziął jeńców. Płyta bardzo ekstremalna, ale wciągającą, kipiąca złożonością i pomysłami. Co tu dużo mówić, w tej estetyce nie pojawiło się do tej pory nic tak świeżego. Na odchodnym warto dodać, że na płytce pojawiły się też covery Sodom i Acheron ("Bombenhagel" i "Ave Satanas"), a gościnnie udzielili się Vincent Crowley, Mark of the Beast oraz Kris Stanley. Istna wisienka na torcie całego tego misterium zniszczenia! Bierzcie ten album w ciemno!

There has never been such an album, a mixture of genres and styles! At least I don't know a similar record. But let's start from the beginning. DeathEpoch is a joint project of the leader of the Putrid Cult label - Morgul, and Lord K. (Nekkrofukk, Goathorne, Sacrificulus ...). The first is resonsible for the guitar parts (supposedly so many years of break from playing the instrument, but he did great) and bass, while the second sat behind the drums and stood behind the microphone. The gentlemen attempted a very unconventional project combining black/death/war metal cannonade, tarry sound, powerful riffs and vocal blasphemy, wildness with a lot of ambient and electronics. All of this is mixed throughout the whole album. It's a bit as if Mysticum, Archgoat, Beherit, Mz. 412 and, I don't know, Brighter Death Now we all joined together. Admit that the synthesis is very original, bold, but the effect is stunning! An album was created that has the predispositions to achieve not only a cult status, but also to be a groundbreaking record for the underground scene. A bold project that, in my opinion, did not take prisoners. A very extreme album, but addictive, full of complexity and ideas. What can I say, nothing so fresh has appeared in this aesthetic so far. On leaving, it is worth adding that the CD also featured covers of Sodom and Acheron ("Bombenhagel" and "Ave Satanas"), and Vincent Crowley, Mark of the Beast and Kris Stanley as guests. A perfect sum-up of all this mystery of destruction! Grab this album without any hesitation!

Illum Adora - Infernum et Necromantium EP (Folter Records 2020)

Dawno nie było żadnego wpisu, także warto jakąś ciekawą płytą tę ciszę przełamać. Już od paru miesięcy czeka na zaprezentowanie nowa EPka Illum Adora "Infernum et Necromantium". Krótki, zwięzły materiał, ale bardzo treściwy i ze sporym odniesieniem do klasyki. Ten zespół od samego początku był dla mnie taką mroczniejszą, bardziej black metalową wersją Desaster z domieszką Satyricon z czasów "Dark Medieval Times". "Infernum et Necromantium" tylko mnie w tym utwierdził. Jest to też najlepsze, co Illum Adora do tej pory nagrała (nie to, żebym nie lubił poprzednich nagrań). Jest mrok i klimat, dobre brzmienie, wpadające w ucho riffy, odrobina akustyków i cover Behemoth na deser. I tutaj szacun ode mnie. Zespół wybrał kawałek "Blackvisions of the Almighty" z dema "From the Pagan Vastlands", który bardzo mile połechtał fakt, że jestem zagorzałym fanem wczesnego dorobku Pomorskiej Bestii. Zagrali go niemal tak jak Behemoth, ale wyraziściej i czyściej - w końcu warunki nagraniowe są teraz o piekło lepsze niż były kiedyś. Co ważne, Illum Adora nie zgubiła klimatu, jaki miał ten kawałek, jak i całe demo, także jestem tutaj ukontentowany. Numer ładnie wpasował się w resztę materiału (możecie teraz wyobrazić sobie, jaki jest mniej więcej styl grupy) i gdyby nie wiedzieć, że to kawałek Behemoth, można by go przypisać do repertuaru Illum Adora. Jeżeli ich drugi pełny album będzie rozwinięciem tego, co tu usłyszałem, to bez wahania po niego sięgnę. Tymczasem polecam Wam tę płytkę na nadchodzące jesienne wieczory.

There has been no review for a long time, so it's worth breaking this silence with an interesting album. The new Illum Adora's EP "Infernum et Necromantium" has been waiting for its time a few months now. Short, concise material, but very enjoyable and with a lot of reference to the classics. This band from the very beginning was for me a darker, more black metal version of Desaster with a touch of Satyricon from the "Dark Medieval Times" era. "Infernum et Necromantium" only confirmed me in this. It's also the best material that Illum Adora has recorded so far (not that I don't like previous recordings). There is darkness and atmosphere, good sound, catchy riffs, a bit of acoustics and a cover of Behemoth as a final. And here respect from me. The band chose the song "Blackvisions of the Almighty" from the demo "From the Pagan Vastlands", which very pleasantly flattered the fact that I am a die-hard fan of the early achievements of Pomeranian Beast. They played it almost like Behemoth, but more clearly and more purely - after all, the recording conditions are now hell better than they used to be back then. Importantly, Illum Adora did not lose the atmosphere that this song has, as well as the whole demo, I'm also happy about that. The track tied in nicely with the rest of the material (you can now imagine what the band's style is more or less) and if you didn't know it was a Behemoth track, it could be treated as Illum Adora's repertoire. If their second full album is an extension of what I heard here, I will reach for it without hesitation. In the meantime, I recommend this title to you for the upcoming autumn evenings.

Nyctophilia/Hellmoon - Under the Darkest Sign of Ancient Evil SPLIT (Under the Sign of Garazel 2020)

Chyba w życiu nie słyszałem tak spójnego i dobranego splitu. Nyctophilia i Hellmoon jawią się tu niczym dwa bliźniacze zespoły, którym przyświeca ten sam cel - kult black metalu lat 90., ale nie tego ze wsparciem klawiszy. O nie! Na pierwszy rzut oka (czy ucha) oba zespoły nawiązują swym graniem do wczesnej twórczości Tsjudera, Taake, Setherial, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, a przede wszystkim starego Darkthrone. Ale to nie wszystko! Nyctophilia dodaje do tego nieco tej charakterystycznej melancholii, chłodu i tęsknoty znanej ze Striborg, Xasthur czy Evilfeast. Jest mróz i przeszywające riffy. Każdy, kto słyszał poprzednie dzieła Nyctophilii wie, czego się spodziewać i z pewnością się nie zawiedzie.

Ze strony Hellmoon, poza wspomnianymi odniesieniami, lecą bardziej galopujące partie gitar, zahaczające o wczesne dzieła Desaster ("A Touch of Medieval Darkness"). Hellmoon to też ścieżka, którą obecnie kroczą Warmoon Lord czy Werwolf. Zarówo brzmienie, jak i wokal są również surowsze niż na materiale Nyctophilii. Znajdą się tu też jakieś nieco melodyjne riffy, jeżeli można o takowych mówić w kontekście stosunkowo piwnicznego materiału.

Podsumowując, złego słowa powiedzieć nie mogę. Split wyszedł bardzo dobrze, materiały mają klimat, trzymają poziom i robią fajną wizytówkę obu zespołom. Zwłaszcza Hellmoon, który ma za sobą dopiero jeden pełny materiał, którego próżno szukać na na jakimkolwiek nośniku w naszym kraju. Polecam!

Nyctophilia and Hellmoon appear here as two twin bands with the same goal - the cult of black metal of the '90s, but not the one with keyboard backgrounds. Oh no! At first glance (or hearing) both bands refer to the early works of Tsjuder, Taake, Setherial, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, and, above all, the old Darkthrone. But it is not everything! Nyctophilia adds a bit of that characteristic melancholy, coldness and longing known from Striborg, Xasthur or Evilfeast. There is frost and pircing riffs. Anyone who has heard previous works of Nyctophilia knows what to expect and will not be disappointed.

From the Hellmoon side, apart from the aforementioned references, there are more galloping guitar parts that hook up with the early works of Desaster ("A Touch of Medieval Darkness"). Hellmoon is also on the path that Warmoon Lord and Werwolf are currently walking. The sound and vocals are also rougher than on the Nyctophilia material. You will also find some slightly melodic riffs, if you can talk about them in the context of relatively basement-like material.

To sum up, I cannot say a bad word. The split turned out very well, the materials have the atmosphere, are of the same quality and make a nice showcase for both bands. Especially Hellmoon, who has only one full-length material released and which is hard to find on any format in our country. Recommended!
