Wartodd - Pagan Pride (Ewiges Eis Records / Total War 2020)

Tak się powinno grać Black Metal! Po raz kolejny trafiam w tym roku na zespół, którego materiał powala mnie swoją zawartością. Tych dwóch panów, Leszy i Velesa, to ktoś chyba wyrwał z wczesnych lat 90. polskiej sceny i usadowił na naszym obecnym podwórku, i to tak żywcem! Brzmienie, struktury, przekaz, estetyka (wystarczy spojrzeć na okładkę) - wszystko z tamtych lat. Wartodd to suma dem i pierwszych płyt Graveland, Veles, Fullmoon, Thunderbolt czy Infernum. I jest to tak dobrze zagrane, z takim wyczuciem tematu, pasją i zrozumieniem, że szok. W momencie pisania odtwarzam ją już któryś raz z rzędu. Poza kompozycjami w rzeczonym stylu, dostajemy tu również cover "The Night of Fullmoon" Graveland. Wyszedł z taką samą mocą, klimatem i ekspresją jak oryginał, tyle że bez klawiszy, ale wcale to w niczym nie przeszkadza, tak też jest w punkt. Warto jeszcze wyszczególnić zwieńczenie płyty, bowiem dostajemy na finał dungeon synthową miniaturę. I teraz, skoro ja, oddany fan Mortiisa, to mówię, to musi być coś na rzeczy - tej krótkiej kompozycji nie powstydziłby się właśnie sam Mortiis! Nie podejrzewałem, że ktoś mnie w tej materii tak zaskoczy, a tu proszę.

Powiem krótko, kwestię black metalowej płyty roku mam już rozwiązaną. Wartodd prześcignął moich faworytów w postaci nowego Czorta, Werwolf i Faustian Pact (niestety, Warmoon Lord jeszcze nie nagrał w tym roku pełniaka) i nie sądzę, żeby cokolwiek miało szansę to przebić. "Pagan Pride" pozamiatało konkurencję! Polecam ten materiał każdemu, bierzcie w ciemno!

This is how Black Metal should be played! Once again this year, I come across a band whose material overwhelms me with its content. These two gentlemen, Leszy and Veles, are probably somebody who got out of Polish scene of the early 90s  and moved to our current reality, and so alive! Sound, structures, message, aesthetics (just look at the cover) - all taken from those years. Wartodd is the sum of the demos and first albums of Graveland, Veles, Fullmoon, Thunderbolt and Infernum. And it is so well played, with such a sense of the subject, passion and understanding that it is just unbelievable. At the time of writing, I had played it several times already. In addition to compositions in the mentioned style, we also get a cover of Graveland's "The Night of Fullmoon". It came out with the same power, climate and expression as the original, but without the keys; still, it does not change anything, it is still up to the point. It is also worth putting emphasis on the ending of the album, because we get a dungeon synth miniature at the final. And now, since I, a dedicated Mortiis fan, say it, there has to be something going on - this short composition could have been performed by Mortiis himself! I did not suspect that anyone in this matter would surprise me, but it happened here.

I will say briefly, the subject of black metal album of the year has already been resolved. Wartodd surpassed my favorites in the form of new Czort, Werwolf and Faustian Pact (unfortunately, Warmoon Lord has not recorded a full-length this year) and I don't think anything has a chance to beat it. "Pagan Pride" swept the competition! I recommend this material to everyone, grab it without hesitation!

Vengeance Sorcery - In Oath to Torment, Unrelenting... (Fallen Temple 2020)

"In Oath to Torment, Unrelenting..." to zbiór wszystkich czterech dem, jakie wydało do tej pory Vengeance of Sorcery. W sumie dwadzieścia dwa utwory brudnego, surowego, smolistego, a za razem oldschoolowego Black Metalu utrzymanego przede wszystkim w wolnych i średnich tempach. Ogromnym atutem całości materiału jest jego organiczność, fajny rzężący bas (chyba nawet lekko przesterowany) oraz złowieszczy, rytualny klimat. Mimo surowości, jest też stosunkowo przejrzysty i sprawia wrażenie nagranego na setkę, może w istocie w każdym przypadku tak było. To Black Metal dla zwolenników takich zespołów i materiałów jak debiut Samael, Moenen of Xezbeth, Beherit czy Nekkrofukk, czyli gęstego, na ogół wolnego grania z domieszką Doom Metalu.

Oczywistym jest, że to żadne nihil novi, ale uważam ten projekt za czołówkę tego typu klimatów. Mojego ulubionego w temacie Nekkrofukk nie przeskakuje, ale naprawdę daje radę i w sumie cieszę się, że wyszło to na CD i mogłem się w pełni całą dyskografią zapoznać. Tym bardziej, że z odtwarzaniem kaset to już u mnie krucho.

Warto jeszcze wspomnieć, że stojący za Vengeance Sorcery Deathwalker odpowiedzialny jest również za takie projekty jak Nihil Invocation, Zpektraellotaen oraz Morgennebel, w których także tworzy w obrębie oldschoolowego, piwnicznego Black Metalu; z każdym warto się zapoznać.

Reasumując, polecam ową składankę każdemu zwolennikowi podziemnej sceny i Black Metalu w jego bardziej pierwotnej i topornej postaci, bez udziwnień i podążając za dawnymi tradycjami. No i  tym, dla których ważna jest odpowiednia atmosfera!

"In Oath to Torment, Unrelenting..." is a collection of all four demos that Vengeance of Sorcery has released so far. A total of twenty-two songs of dirty, raw, tarry, and also oldschool Black Metal kept primarily at slow and medium tempos. The great advantage of the whole material is its organic nature, nice thirsty bass (probably even slightly distorted) and an ominous, ritual atmosphere. Despite the austerity, it is also relatively transparent and gives the impression of being recorded live, maybe in every case it was like that. This is Black Metal for supporters of such bands and materials as the debut of Samael, Moenen of Xezbeth, Beherit or Nekkrofukk - that is, dense, generally slow stuff with an admixture of Doom Metal.

It is obvious that this is nihil novi, but I consider this project to be at the forefront of this type of playing. My favorite one in the subject - Nekkrofukk - is not dethroned here, but this one really does its work and all in all I am glad that it came out on CD, so I could fully experience the entire discography. All in all, I no longer have the opportunity to check out tapes the way I did in the past.

It is also worth mentioning that Deathwalker, the man behind Vengeance Sorcery, is also responsible for such projects as Nihil Invocation, Zpektraellotaen and Morgennebel, in which he also creates within the oldschool, basement-like Black Metal. It is worth getting familiar with each of them.

To sum up, I recommend this compilation to every fan of the underground scene and Black Metal in its more primitive and raw form, one without surprises and following the old traditions. And for whom the right atmosphere is essential!

Barbaric Horde - Axe of Superior Savagery (Godz ov War Productions 2020)

Kozioł w masce przeciwgazowej wpisany w logo oraz takowe na twarzach muzyków, kaptury i pasy z nabojami, adnotacja "Recorded at the goat dungeon 2019"... Powiało kultem Ross Bay i to bez dwóch zdań! I nie inaczej jest w warstwie muzycznej. Debiutancki pełniak duetu Barbaric Horde "Axe of Superior Savagery", to naturalna kontynuacja black/death metalowych wyziewów zapoczątkowanych niegdyś przez Blasphemy i Beherit, kontynuowanych przez Conqueror, Black Witchery i Proclamation, a kultywowanych obecnie przez chociażby Bestial Raids, Revenge czy Death Worship. To to samo opętańcze granie bez krzty wytchnienia. Każdy z utworów na płycie to bestialska kanonada gitar i perkusji, złowieszczego wokalu, tylko na sekundy zwalniająca w tym piekielnym transie. Niecałe pół godziny istnego bluźnierstwa, szaleństwa, diabła i czego tylko! Może brak tu urozmaiceń, które nie zlewałyby ze sobą zamieszczonych tu utworów, ale tak to ma działać. Tu nie ma kompromisów, wydumanych rozwiązań, jest tylko prostota i oldschool niemal do granic możliwości. Generalnie, wtajemniczeni wiedzą, o co chodzi. Jeżeli wspomniane zespoły nie są wam obce i takie grańsko Wam pasuje, to debiutancki krążek Barbaric Horde wejdzie Wam bez popity, gwarantuję. Klasa w temacie! Rzekłem!

Smell of Ross Bay cult is here without a doubt! And it is no different in the musical aspect. The debut full-length of the Barbaric Horde duo "Axe of Superior Savagery" is a natural continuation of the black/death metal fumes that were once initiated by Blasphemy and Beherit, continued by Conqueror, Black Witchery and Proclamation, and are currently cultivated by Bestial Raids, Revenge or Death Worship. It is the same crazy stuff without a rest. Each of the songs on the album is a bestial canonade of guitars and drums, sinister vocals, only slowing down for a few seconds in this hellish trance. Maybe there are no varieties here that wouldn't blend together the songs included here, but this is how it works. There are no compromises, no imaginary solutions, only simplicity and oldschool almost to the limit. In general, insiders know what's going on. If the bands mentioned above are familiar to you and you enjoy them, then the debut album of Barbaric Horde will appeal to you totally, I guarantee. Top stuff in the subject! I have spoken!

Trupi Swąd - W Imię Diabła (Putrid Cult 2020)

I tak oto zawiało starociem, piwnicą i... trupim swądem. Tak, Trupi Swąd to istne brzmieniowe i estetyczne lochy (ale już nie smoki, o nie!). Nikki Speed (również znany z Throat Cutter), bo taki pseudonim nosi twórca stojący za tym projektem, nie przebiera w środkach i miesza tu wpływy Kata z czasów "666" (również w warstwie tekstowej), Living Death, starego Running Wild, Sodom ("Obsessed by Cruelty" i "In the Sign of Evil") Sarcofago czy Vulcano. Do wszystkiego dolane jest toporne brzmienie z pogłosem, dając efekt zajechanej demówki, ale mimo to ciekawie to współgra i ten piwniczny klimat robi swoje. Materiał teoretycznie totalnie nie w swój czas i trend na różne "posty" i mieszanki Metalu z dziwnymi składnikami bez składu i ładu. Tutaj była absolutna świadomość tego, co ma powstać - i to powstało. Niemal dwunastominutowa podróż w czasie do odmętów formowania się ekstremalnego grania i jego sceny. Trzy numery (licząc intro - cztery), które pokocha się za tę prostotę, naiwność i ogień tamtych dni lub znienawidzi, szukając dziury w całym. Ja polecam, bo cel został tu osiągnięty, a więcej nie trzeba.

And so the old stuff, basement and... corpse stench has blown. Yes, Trupi Swąd (Corpse Stench) is the real sound and aesthetic dungeons (but not dragons, no!). Nikki Speed ​​(also known from Throat Cutter), because such a nickname bears the creator behind this project, does not beat around the bush and mixes the influence of Kat from the time of "666" (also in matter of lyrics), Living Death, old Running Wild, Sodom ("Obsessed by Cruelty" and "In the Sign of Evil"), Sarcofago or Vulcano. Coarse sound with reverb is added here, giving the effect of a demo, but it interestingly harmonizes with the rest and this basement climate does its job. Theoretically, the material is totally not in its time and trend for various "post" stuff and mixtures of Metal with strange ingredients without sense and order. Here there was an absolute awareness of what was to be created - and it was created. Almost a 12-minute journey in time to the depths of the formation of extreme playing and its scene. Three tracks (counting intro - four) that you will love for this simplicity, naivety and fire of those days, or hate looking for something to complain about. I recommend it because the goal has been achieved here and there is no need for anything more.

Putrid - Antichrist Above (Godz Ov War Productions 2020)

Czas na trochę smoły wprost z peruwiańskiego piekła! A taką serwuje nam wraz ze swoją nową płytą Putrid. "Antichrist Above" to bluźniercza wypadkowa aż czterech stylów grania - Black, Death, War, a nawet Thrash Metalu. To dziesięć hymnów czystego szaleństwa, bez melodii i upiększania. Totalny chaos i zniszczenie, brutalne, agresywne granie od pierwszej do ostatniej minuty. Na płycie słychać bardzo wiele inspiracji dobrze znanymi już klasykami w postaci Angelcorpse, Impiety, Krisiun, Proclamation, Sarcofago czy Bestial Warlust. Także znając te nazwy możecie się już domyślić, czego spodziewać się po "Antichrist Above". Mimo tylu naleciałości, to prosty i szczery Metal w południowoamerykańskim stylu, pomylić tego klimatu nie da się z niczym innym. Tamtejszy Metal ma już swoje własne okrzepłe i niemal niepodrabiane brzmienie.

"Antichrist Above" nie jest płytą, którą można rozkładać na czynniki pierwsze i dopatrywać się nie wiadomo jakiej złożoności wpływów czy finezji kompozycji. To Metal w swojej pierwotnej, organicznej postaci, mówiąc najprościej - czysty oldschool i hołd dla starych bogów. Taki jest właśnie Putrid i taką muzykę grają, ni mniej, ni więcej, taki swoisty "fuck off" dla wszelkich trendów i przesadnie wymuskanych produkcji. Dla każdego fana właśnie takiego oblicza metalowego grania ta płyta będzie strzałem w dziesiątkę. Może po czasie trąci nieco monotonią, ale jej klimat i brzmienie totalnie to rekompensują. Jest tu czego posłuchać i nawet do czego wracać. Polecam!

Time for some tar straight from Peruvian hell! And it's served by Putrid and their latest album. "Antichrist Above" is a blasphemous result of four styles of playing - Black, Death, War and even Thrash Metal. These are ten hymns of pure madness, without melody and embellishment. Total chaos and destruction, brutal aggressive stuff from the first to the last minute. On the album you can hear a lot of inspiration from well-known classics in the form of Angelcorpse, Impiety, Krisiun, Proclamation, Sarcofago or Bestial Warlust. Also, knowing these names, you can already guess what to expect from "Antichrist Above". Despite so many influences, it's simple and honest South American style Metal, you can't confuse this climate with anything else. This kind of Metal already has its own solid sound that can't be copied easily.
"Antichrist Above" is not a record that can't be discussed over and over again searching for uncountable complexity of influences or finesse of its compositions. It's Metal in its original, organic form, simply put - clean oldschool and a tribute to the old gods. That's what Putrid is like and such music they play, no more, no less, it's a kind of "fuck off" to all trends and excessively polished production. For every fan of such face of metal this album will hit the spot. Maybe after a while it introduces a bit of monotony, but its climate and sound completely compensate it. There is something to listen to and even something to come back to. Totally recommend!

Frightful - Astral Freeze (Self-released 2019)

"Astral Freeze" to pierwszy materiał demo gdańskiego Frightful, ale nie pierwszy, jaki wydali, bo zespół ma już na koncie dwie EPki i split z Cannibe. Niemniej były to stricte death metalowe materiały. Teraz zespół jakby skręca w inne, bardziej black/death metalowe rejony z silnym naciskiem na oldschoolowe granie. Na "Astral Freeze" dostajemy trzy utwory, w tym cover Dissection "Son of the Mourning" (wyszło to naprawdę dobrze). Wybór tego numeru aż nadto świadczy o tym, w jakim kierunku zmierza grupa. To właśnie okolice starego Dissection z czasów ich dem, Sacramentum czy Necrophobic, tylko jakby w bardziej agresywnym wydaniu. Warsztat jest okej, podobnie brzmienie (biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że to demo), nie ma się tu do czego przyczepić. Panowie nie są specjalnie oryginalni, ale fajnie pracują na swoich inspiracjach, dając solidne i poprawne granie w temacie, czują klimat i to najważniejsze. Naprawdę dobrze mi się tego słuchało i widzę potencjał. Szczerze jestem ciekaw pełnego albumu.

Niestety, niczego pozytywnego nie mogę powiedzieć na temat formy wydania tego dema na CD. Mamy już takie czasy i możliwości, że naprawdę nietrudno jest samemu wydać niski nakład płyty i nie będzie to poligrafia zrobiona metodą lichego ksero i CD-R z nadrukiem, którego matrycą były gryzmoły cienkopisem. Odpowiednie wydanie płyty własnym sumptem to nie są przesadne koszty. Spotkałem się z wieloma przypadkami, gdzie efekt był naprawdę satysfakcjonujący. Na szczęście ten krótki materiał poratowało wydawniczo Sign of Evil Productions, wydając go porządnie na profesjonalnej kasecie. Wszystkim zainteresowanym to właśnie wydanie polecam!

"Astral Freeze" is the first demo material of Frightful from Gdańsk (Poland), but not the first they have released, because the band has already recorded two EPs and a split with Cannibe. Nevertheless, those were strictly death metal materials. Now the band seems to turn into other, more black/death metal regions with a strong emphasis on oldschool playing. On "Astral Freeze" we get three songs, including the cover of Dissection "Son of the Mourning" (played really well to be honest). Choosing this composition is more than enough to show in which direction the group is heading. It is around the old Dissection from the time of their demos, Sacramentum or Necrophobic, only in a more aggressive way. The technical side is okay, just like the sound (remember that this is a demo), there is nothing to complain about. The band is not much original, but they work nicely on their inspirations, giving solid stuff on the subject, they feel the atmosphere and this is the most important thing. I really enjoyed listening to this and I see the potential. I'm honestly curious about the full album.

Unfortunately, I can't say anything positive about the format of the issue of this demo on CD. We already have such times and possibilities that it is quite easy to release a limited release of the disc by yourself and it will not be polygraphy made with the use of a shabby photocopier and a CD-R with some scrawl printed on. A proper self-released record is not that expensive as it may seem. I've come across many situations when it worked and the effect was really cool. Fortunately, this short material was released by Sign of Evil Productions properly on a professional cassette. I recommend this edition to everyone interested!

Blood Stronghold - Spectres of Bloodshed (Putrid Cult 2020)

Na swym trzecim pełnym albumie Blood Stronghold serwuje nam kolejną wyprawę w odmęty brzmień starej polskiej sceny BM spod znaku Graveland, Iuvenes, Werewolf czy Infernum. Kłania się tu również austriackie Woodtemple. Tak, to są właśnie tamte brzmienia i klimat. Łączą pogański pierwiastek ze średniowieczną atmosferą i black metalowym mrokiem. Jest surowo, brzmienie mamy niemal demówkowe, ale to własnie dzięki temu płyta ma taki wyjątkowy retro wydźwięk. Przenosi słuchacza perfekcyjnie w zamierzchłe czasy i jakby nie mieć świadomości, że to powstało obecnie, to można by brać to na spokojnie za nagrania sprzed jakichś dwudziestu, dwudziestu pięciu lat. Cieszy mnie fakt, że jeszcze się takie płyty ukazują i dzięki nim młodsze pokolenia metalowców mogą bez problemu poznać to starsze granie i odkryć nie tylko Blood Stronghold, ale też wszystkie te zespoły, o których wspomniałem na początku. W końcu "Spectres of Bloodshed" to przeogromny hołd dla tych dawnych płyt i zespołów, które tę estetykę w Black Metalu zapoczątkowały. Zatem kto lubi stary, dobry Graveland z czasów od "Following the Voice of Blood" w górę i płyt temu podobnych, to bez wahania powinien sięgnąć po najnowszy krążek Blood Stronghold, to faktycznie twierdza tej starej posoki pompującej niegdyś krwiobieg przede wszystkim polskiej sceny BM.

On his third full-length album, Blood Stronghold serves us another journey to the depths of the sounds of the old Polish BM scene under the sign of Graveland, Iuvenes, Werewolf or Infernum. Austrian Woodtemple also bows here. Yes, these are those sounds and atmosphere. They combine the pagan element with a medieval atmosphere and black metal darkness. It's harsh, the sound is almost demo-like, but it is thanks to this album that it has such a unique retro tone. It takes the listener perfectly to the ancient times and if you were not aware that it was created now, you could easily take it for recordings from like twenty or twenty-five years ago. I am happy that such albums are still being released and thanks to them, younger generations of metalheads can easily get to know this older stuff and discover not only Blood Stronghold, but also all those bands I mentioned at the beginning. After all, "Specters of Bloodshed" is a huge tribute to those old albums and bands that initiated this aesthetics in Black Metal. So who likes the old, good Graveland from the times of "Following the Voice of Blood" and up, and other similar stuff, should not hesitate to reach for the new Blood Stronghold, it is in fact the stronghold of this old blood that once pumped the bloodstream of the Polish BM scene.
