Today I am reviewing another ambitious and multi-layered work. I'm are talking about the second full album of Krakow's Rivers Like Veins - "The Hidden Portals". I admit that I did not have the opportunity to listen to the first album, but I liked this material so much that I will have to get to know the debut. Well, to the point. At the core of Rivers Like Veins is cold, concrete black metal, which spreads its wings towards electronic elements, melodic ornaments, atmosphere and spatiality of sound. It is visible that it is a mature band, aware of its craft and not afraid to reach for various interesting solutions, selected with precision. They can also weave catchy guitar parts, simpler structures into the aforementioned form, which soon turns into significant solos or experiments with electronics (e.g. in the song "Multiverse Visions" there is a fragment in which the band winked at the form that immediately reminded me of Carbon Based Lifeforms). In places it also reminds me of the later materials of Mysticum, Hades or Samael, who also experimented with similar electronic forms, but were unable to maintain the rawness that Rivers Like Veins still maintains. And the vocals - sharp, strong, from time to time also turning into declamations or female vocals. In a word, "The Hidden Portals" is a musical cornucopia, closely guarded by a strong black metal foundation. The icing on the cake is a cover of "Twin Peaks Theme" by Angelo Badalamenti! When I heard it, I literally opened my mouth. Respect for such a non-obvious and original choice and even greater for its execution! In addition, this cover fits perfectly into the material on the album. I must admit that the end of the year surprises me musically. First listening to Beyond Time, now a new album from Rivers Like Veins. Both albums set the bar very high and will certainly take a serious in this year's summary.
