Sam zespół jest też przykładem grupy, przy której tak ostatnio nadużywane słowo jak "kult" znajduje swoje pełne uzasadnienie. Bo to, cholera, jest kult! Hellhammer, pomijając już same demówki, i ich nagrany w 1984 roku "Apocalyptic Raids", był wtedy istnym diamentem podziemnej sceny, który już za chwilę miał stać się brylantem w postaci Celtic Frost. Venom rządzili w kwestii brutalności, szybkości, natomiast Hellhammer miażdżył surowością, ciężarem i mrokiem swoich kompozycji. To było miejscami tak piwniczne i złowieszcze, że deklasowało wszelkie materiały, które w tamtym czasie mogły pretendować do miana najbardziej ekstremalnych. Co prawda w 1984 mamy do czynienia z debiutem Bathory, lecz ten, podszyty punkiem, oscylował wokół szybszych i bardziej prostolinijnych kompozycji, bliżej mu było do Venom. Hellhammer zwolnił trochę obroty, postawił szczególnie na brud brzmienia, przygniatającą atmosferę i ciężkie riffy, posępny klimat podszyty śmiercią, makabrą i apokaliptycznymi wizjami. "Apocalyptic Raids" to pierwszy materiał z Martinem (jako Salyed Necros) na basie i ostatni zespołu pod szyldem Hellhammer (pomijając kompilację "Death Metal"). Można zauważyć na tej EPce, jak znacząco - będąc wciąż piwnicznym truchłem - wzrosła jakość materiałów grupy w stosunku do dem. Materiał ten niósł nową energię i pomysły nie tylko do samej muzyki, ale i również do tekstów. To tutaj możemy znaleźć m.in. słynny coverowany przez masę zespołów (np. Behemoth) "Horus/Aggressor" oraz niemal 10-minutowy "Triumph of Death", w którym znajdziecie jedne z najbardziej szaleńczych wokali swojego czasu. Niestety, krytyka nie pozostawiła na "Apocalyptic Raids" suchej nitki, a Hellhammer zaczął ginąć przytłoczony nowymi materiałami Slayera, Metalliki, Mercyful Fate, czy Metal Church. Ich umiejętności rosły, ale było to wciąż strawne tylko dla niewielkiej ilości osób, zwłaszcza brzmieniowo. Zespół, bojąc się o utratę możliwości wydania albumu, porzucił szyld Hellhammer, przeistaczając się w Celtic Frost i proponując wydawcy nowy koncept działania. Udało się, dzięki czemu jeszcze w tym samym roku powstał dobrze znany "Morbid Tales". Reszta to już historia, ale o Hellhammer nikt nie zapomina i nigdy nie zapomni! Bez tej nazwy ekstremalna scena nie wyglądałaby tak samo, nie byłoby Celtic Frost czy chociażby Darkthrone, jaki obecnie znamy. To zespół i materiał o niesamowitym znaczeniu!

Historical material, one of the undeniable foundations of Black Metal, an inspiration for so many bands that it's hard to count. The band itself is also an example of a group where so recently abused word as "cult" finds its full justification. Because it is a damn cult! Hellhammer, apart from the demos themselves, and their "Apocalyptic Raids" recorded in 1984, was then a real diamond of the underground scene, which was about to become a brilliant in the form of Celtic Frost. Venom ruled in terms of brutality and speed, while Hellhammer crushed with rawness, weight and darkness of their compositions. It was so basement-like and in some parts ominous that it outclassed all materials that at that time could claim to be the most extreme. It is true that in 1984 we deal with the debut of Bathory, but this new band, filled with punk, oscillated around faster and more straightforward compositions, it was closer to Venom. Hellhammer slowed down a bit, focused especially on the dirt of the sound, the overwhelming atmosphere and heavy riffs, the bleak climate lined with death, macabre and apocalyptic visions. "Apocalyptic Raids" is the first material with Martin (as Salyed Necros) on bass and the last one under the Hellhammer banner (apart from the "Death Metal" compilation). On this EP it can be seen how significantly, being still in underground, the quality of the group's materials increased in relation to the demos. It brought new energy and ideas not only to the music itself, but also to the lyrics. Here we can find the famous "Horus/Aggressor" covered by a lot of bands (eg. Behemoth) and the almost 10-minute "Triumph of Death", in which you'll find one of the craziest vocals of your time. Unfortunately, the critics hammered "Apocalyptic Raids", and Hellhammer began to die, overwhelmed by new materials from Slayer, Metallica, Mercyful Fate or Metal Church. Their skills grew, but it was still digestible only to a small number of people, especially in terms of sound. The band, afraid of losing the opportunity to release the album, abandoned the Hellhammer sign, transforming into Celtic Frost and proposing a new concept to the publisher. It worked, thanks to which the well-known "Morbid Tales" was created the same year. The rest is history, but nobody forgets about Hellhammer and will never forget! Without this name, the extreme scene wouldn't look the same, there wouldn't be Celtic Frost, or even Darkthrone as we now know it. This is a band and material of incredible importance!
