Stormkeep - Tales of Othertime (Van Records 2021)
English translation:
This year, in the field of melodic black metal, there is no better album than Stormkeep's debut longplay. It was even better for me than the second Warmoon Lord album. The biggest advantage of "Tales of Othertime" is not only the sound, but most of all the carrying capacity of this album. The album has a lot of melodies, nice riffs, and at the same time these tracks are long and there is a lot going on in them. Sometimes it's fast and ominous, sometimes slower and very atmospheric, even epic. And those vampire-like vocals! Of course, there are keyboards, choirs, there is a dungeon synth accent (similar to the EP, but here we have two such compositions and it is definitely an advantage) and there are many elements mixed here that can be found in the music of other bands and which have been very intricately compiled here, giving Stormkeep's art a new dimension and quality. At times you can hear inspirations from the old albums of Keep of Kalessin, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir from the times of "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" or even the Children of Bodom debut (!). When it comes to the style of Stormkeep, these inspirations are very original in the context of their music. Of course, the fondament is melodic black metal from the second half of the 90s. For enthusiasts of early works by Siebenburgen, the aforementioned Keep of Kalessin and Dimmu Borgir, Troll, Sacramentum, Odium or later Obtained Enslavement albums, this record is simply a must. The album is captivating and undoubtedly memorable. I will come back to it more than once for sure. A very good response in the underground and, at the moment, the sold-out status of the whole press of vinyls and CDs, only confirm my words. In the list of my top five releases of this year, this album will definitely be found! As a bonus, a second CD entitled "Lost Relics" was added to the album. Here you will find over 22 minutes of dungeon synth material of the highest quality. Five instrumental compositions that beautifully complement "Tales of Othertime".

Frightful - Spectral Creator (Awakening Records 2021)

English translation:
After the EPs and demos, it's finally time for the first full-length album of Frightful. And we have a huge qualitative and compositional leap! The gentlemen surprised with the multitude of inspirations as part of old school playing and turning this old form into something with new energy and passion for the subject. You'll hear echoes of Dissection, early Kreator, Possessed, Morbid Angel, and Merciless here. They are supposed to be popular inspirations (but at times it reminds me of what is best in "Altars of Madness", "Seven Churches" or "The Somberlain"), but it is not so popular to do with your own sound and compositions that are not they will be boring and will attract the listener. Frightful made it happen and hopefully they will follow that path. There is not only a mine of awesome riffs here, but also great carrying solos. Everything else is not left behind either, drums and vocals without any negative comments. The material undoubtedly came from the hands of musicians who totally know and feel the music they play. They know what kind of atmosphere it must have and what to do so that their playing does not stop at the stage of recreating the past. Now it's hard for the young groups to break through because they are losing to the old guard, but I think Frightful will go a long way if he fights for his own. The material appealed to me, as they say - without any help, and it won't leave the player for a long time. This is the metal that Welcome to the Morbid Blog likes best! The band returns to what is best about this playing, not only remian within the borders of worshipping the old, not live only on nostalgia. The album will definitely land in the top five of mine from this year. I have spoken!

Impure Declaration / Nekus - Malevolence Evocations (Old Temple 2021)

English translation:
It's been a long time since I had written about any split, and recently I got my hands on one from Impure Declaration and Nekus. Devilish death/doom metal from Poland join forces with German black/death metal. The mixture is truly hellish! Both bands prepared three compositions (two from Impure Declaration, plus a cover of Beherit "The Gate of Nanna"), giving us over half an hour of great stuff. Impure Declaration has already developed its own style and does not disappoint. Their heavy, dark and obscure art create an unusual, ominous atmosphere. It's like a ritual! I hope that they will finally treat us with a full-length album, because this band has a huge potential and I would like to listen to a longer material from them. Nekus, on the other hand, prepared a stuff in which raw, oldschool black and death metal (there are both fast cannonades and slow fragments) mixes with the atmosphere of horror or some gloomy dungeons. The climate is very worrying. The music is accompanied by various peculiar sounds that build up an atmosphere of tension. I am very curious to see it performed live. On the one hand, it has something to do with the colleagues with whom they share this split, on the other hand, there are echoes of bands like Proclamation or Blasphemy, and on another one I hear references to Abruptum. All in all, the split is very well prepared, the music of both bands overlaps and harmonizes with each other. To all oldschool maniacs and those more into heavy sounds in black and death metal, I definitely recommend it!

Rivers Like Veins - The Hidden Portals (Werewolf Promotion 2021)

English translation:
Today I am reviewing another ambitious and multi-layered work. I'm are talking about the second full album of Krakow's Rivers Like Veins - "The Hidden Portals". I admit that I did not have the opportunity to listen to the first album, but I liked this material so much that I will have to get to know the debut. Well, to the point. At the core of Rivers Like Veins is cold, concrete black metal, which spreads its wings towards electronic elements, melodic ornaments, atmosphere and spatiality of sound. It is visible that it is a mature band, aware of its craft and not afraid to reach for various interesting solutions, selected with precision. They can also weave catchy guitar parts, simpler structures into the aforementioned form, which soon turns into significant solos or experiments with electronics (e.g. in the song "Multiverse Visions" there is a fragment in which the band winked at the form that immediately reminded me of Carbon Based Lifeforms). In places it also reminds me of the later materials of Mysticum, Hades or Samael, who also experimented with similar electronic forms, but were unable to maintain the rawness that Rivers Like Veins still maintains. And the vocals - sharp, strong, from time to time also turning into declamations or female vocals. In a word, "The Hidden Portals" is a musical cornucopia, closely guarded by a strong black metal foundation. The icing on the cake is a cover of "Twin Peaks Theme" by Angelo Badalamenti! When I heard it, I literally opened my mouth. Respect for such a non-obvious and original choice and even greater for its execution! In addition, this cover fits perfectly into the material on the album. I must admit that the end of the year surprises me musically. First listening to Beyond Time, now a new album from Rivers Like Veins. Both albums set the bar very high and will certainly take a serious in this year's summary.

Sodom - M-16 (BMG 2001/2021)

Zakup płyty w Polsce (oficjalny dystrybutor)
English translation:
On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the album's release, we go back to 2001 and Sodom's tenth album - "M-16". This album is for sure one of the most famous from this group, next to "Agent Orange" and "In the Sign of Evil". "M-16" is a concept album that is all about the Vietnam War and all its horrors, providing a very anti-war message. Sodom, already after so many years of playing back then, still didn't lose their claw and recorded an album not only strong, but also sounding great and containing very catchy tunes (even hits!), such as "Napalm in the Mourning" (with the beginning taken from "Apocalypse Now"), the title "M-16" and "Marines" with a catchy chorus - "Marines! They are fighting for you! Marines!". There were also tracks, where we are hit by riffs typical of the band that say - "Yes! This is Sodom!". Examples are "Minejumper", "Genocide" or even "Cannon Fodder" - each one is a real killer. This album is also an incredible coherence of aesthetics and visual aspects, starting with a very meaningful cover, ending with photos of the band in war gear in the scenery of the Vietnamese jungle and villages. It all adds up to a truly amazing record and genuinely one of the best albums Sodom have ever made. In order to properly commemorate and recall this album, BMG and the band prepared a vinyl and compact reissue of the "M-16". As for the vinyl, we get a double orange LP with a gatefold cover and envelopes decorated with lyrics and photos of the group. Unfortunately, there is no booklet, poster or any inserts, which always enriches this type of edition. However, I have no to complain about the CD. Here we get a solid digibook with a rich booklet. I cannot say anything wrong about the sound either. The reissue is solid and I can recommend it to you with a clear conscience, I am very pleased with how it turned out in general. The CD version is a must, while the vinyl is recommended to the die-hard fans.
