Pandemic Outbreak - Skulls Beneath the Cross (Awakening Records 2021)

Nareszcie! Słuchałem online, robiłem z grupą wywiad (będzie do poczytania w nadchodzącym numerze Musick Magazine), ale jeszcze nie miałem okazji doświadczyć debiutanckiego albumu Pandemic Outbreak z fizycznego nośnika, a tylko taką formę konkretnego słuchania uznaję i tylko po takim odsłuchu można pisać reckę. Płyta trafiła w moje ręce na dniach i nie wyłazi z odtwarzacza! W stosunku do poprzedniego materiału zespół poczynił niesamowite postępy - to skok w nadprzestrzeń w kwestii zarówno brzmienia, jaki i samych kompozycji. To już świadomy i uformowany death/thrash metal nie biorący jeńców. Słuchając tej płyty przypomina mi się historia Vader, a potem Decapitated, to jak kiedyś te zespoły zawojowały scenę i jakie niegdyś nagrały debiuty. Pandemic Outbreak to tak samo utalentowany zespół, w którym drzemie ten sam potencjał. Przeraża fakt, że "Skulls Beneath the Cross" nie został przygarnięty przez żadnego polskiego wydawcę, nie otrzymał zadowalającej oferty wydawniczej i zespół musiał szukać za granicą. Na szczęście trafili pod skrzydła prężnej i oddanej metalowej sprawie Awakening Records z Chin. Płyta została wydana zajebiście! Cóż, niech polskie labele potraktują to jako prztyczek w nos. Wróćmy jednak do samej muzyki. Nie da się ukryć, że panowie z Pandemic Outbreak to fani starego, dobrego death metalu. Inspiracje wczesnym Vader, Sinister, Morbid Angel, Slayer, Pestilence, Cancer czy nawet Asphyx wylewają się tu nieprzerwanie, także mamy tu misterną mieszankę Florydy ze sceną europejską. Miejscami słyszę tu też nieco swojego ukochanego Dragona z czasów "Fallen Angel", ale to tylko bardzo odległe echa. Brzmieniowo "Skulls Beneath the Cross" to istna potęga. Jest tu cała niezbędna energia, balans i odpowiednia dawka ciężaru. Wszystko chodzi jak Szatan przykazał! Widać po tej płycie ile serca i roboty zostało w nią włożone, ale przede wszystkim, że to wynik niezaprzeczalnej pasji. Mówię to już teraz, głośno i wyraźnie - ten zespół zawojuje scenę i kiedyś będzie wielki! Zobaczycie, usłyszycie!

I listened online, I did an interview with the group (you can check it out in the upcoming issue of Musick Magazine), but I have not yet had the opportunity to experience the debut album of Pandemic Outbreak from a physical format, and this is the only form of proper listening I recognize and only after such listening you can write a review. The album arrived recently and I can't stop listening to it! Compared to the previous material, the band made an incredible progress - it is a leap into hyperspace in terms of both the sound and the compositions itself. It is already conscious and formed death/thrash metal that don't take prisoners. Listening to this album reminds me of the history of Vader and then Decapitated, how these bands conquered the scene in the past and what debuts they recorded back in the days. Pandemic Outbreak is an equally talented band with the same potential. The scary fact is that "Skulls Beneath the Cross" was not issued by any Polish label, didn't receive a satisfying publishing offer and the band had to look abroad. Fortunately, they found themselves under the wings of the thriving and dedicated Awakening Records from China. The album release is fucking great! Well, let Polish labels treat it as a slick on the nose. But let's get back to the music itself. It can't be denied that the guys from Pandemic Outbreak are fans of good old death metal. Inspirations from early Vader, Sinister, Morbid Angel, Slayer, Pestilence, Cancer or even Asphyx are pouring out constantly, and here we have an intricate mix of Florida with the European scene. I can also hear some of my beloved Dragon from the time of "Fallen Angel" here, but these are only very distant echoes. In terms of sound, "Skulls Beneath the Cross" is a real masterpiece. There is all the necessary energy, balance and the right dose of heaviness. Everything as Satan commanded! You can see from this album how much heart and work has been put into it, but most of all, that it is the result of undeniable passion. I say it now, loud and clear - this band will take the scene by storm and be great someday! You will see, you will hear!

Cultum Interitum - Veneration of The New Dawn (Godz ov War Productions 2021)

To już drugi album Cultum Interitum w barwach Godz ov War i drugi pełniak zespołu. Grupa tworzy jedną z najbardziej dusznych i mrocznych odmian black/death metalu, jaką dane mi było słyszeć. "Veneration of the New Dawn" tylko jeszcze bardziej pogłębia muzykę zespołu w tej charakterystycznej aurze. Jest bardzo niepokojąca, brzmi jakby muzyka wydobywała się z jakieś jaskini, jamy czy studni sięgającej samego Hadesu. Płyta sprawia też wrażenie nagranej na setkę, jakby zespół po prostu wszedł do studia i w jednej sali odegrał całość materiału znajdującego się na krążku jakościowo wypadając przy tym bardzo dobrze. Zaintrygowała mnie też spójność elementów graficznych z muzyką Cultum Interitum. Jakbym chciał przedstawić obrazem, to co zespół przedstawia na "Veneration of a New Dawn", to widziałbym właśnie taki styl i takie obrazy - śmierć, bluźnierstwo, zagłada, wszystko w szarych i czarnych kolorach. Jeżeli lubicie takie zespoły jak Sortilegia, Doombringer, Ritual Death, to Cultum Interitum z pewnością trafi w wasz gust. To sztuka bezkompromisowa, która nie szuka poklasku i szerszej publiki, robią swoje od początku do końca przenosząc nas w najgłębsze otchłanie piekła i wir apokalipsy. To metal dla najtwardszych zawodników.

This is Cultum Interitum's second album for Godz ov War and the band's second full-length album in general. The group creates one of the stuffiest and darkest types of black/death metal I've ever heard. "Veneration of the New Dawn" only deepens the band's music in this characteristic aura even more. It is very disturbing, it sounds as if the music is coming from some cave, cavity or well reaching Hades itself. The album also gives the impression of being recorded live, as if the band just entered the studio and in one room played all the material on the disc in one go, still doing it very well in a proper quality. I was also intrigued by the consistency of the graphic elements with the music of Cultum Interitum. If I wanted to present with a picture, what the band presents on "Veneration of a New Dawn", then I would see such a style and such images - death, blasphemy, annihilation, all in gray and black colours. If you like bands such as Sortilegia, Doombringer, Ritual Death, then Cultum Interitum will surely appeal to you. It is an uncompromising art that doesn't seek applause and the wider audience, it does its job from beginning to end, taking us to the deepest abyss of hell and the vortex of the apocalypse. It's metal for the toughest players.

Destroyers - Dziewięć Kręgów Zła (Putrid Cult 2020/21)

Dzięki tegorocznemu wydaniu winylowemu, które właśnie trafiło w moje ręce, zdecydowałem się spisać swoje refleksje odnośnie do nowego albumu Destroyers. W ubiegłym roku się to nie udało, jakoś przełożyłem sobie to na czas bliżej nieokreślony, aż pojawi się bodziec, żeby coś naskrobać. Destroyers jest jedną z grup które w latach 80. budowały polską scenę metalową. Ich twórczość, albo się kocha, albo się nienawidzi, lub po prostu ma się do niej pewien sentyment. Osobiście nie jestem fanem warstwy lirycznej jaką zespół reprezentuje, przynajmniej połowa tekstów kompletnie do mnie nie przemawia, natomiast muzycznie jest to naprawdę kawał solidnego metalowego grania. Bez kombinowania i w stylu lat początków naszej rodzimej sceny. Dzięki temu sięgam sobie od czasu do czasu do twórczości Destroyers. Także mogę powiedzieć, że zapisuję się do tej grupy, która ma jakiś tam sentyment. "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła" to trzeci pełny album Destroyers i powrót po wielu latach przerwy. Pierwszą rzeczą, jaką mogę o nim powiedzieć, to że jest to najlepszy album, jaki zespół nagrał. Tak, brzmi to porządnie, jest energia, fajne riffy. Marek wokalnie też daje radę i nie opuszcza go ten charakterystyczny dla niego styl śpiewania. Tematyka tekstów i ich estetyka się nie zmieniła przez lata, więc jakoś nie specjalnie widzę sens omawiania tej kwestii. Jeżeli dobrze znacie twórczość Destroyers pod tym względem, to wiecie czego się spodziewać. Niemniej bardzo spodobały mi się w tej kwestii "Zemsta Roninów" (może prosty do bólu, ale "Tnie katana! Głowy Ścina!" zapamiętuje się od razu) oraz "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła". Wracając do muzyki. Zespołowi bardzo dobrze zrobił zastrzyk świeżej krwi na gitarach. Praca Dominika i Tomka zbudowała jakość tego materiału. Tak naprawdę, to przede wszystkim dla ich gitar słucham tej płyty i mam ochotę do niej wracać. Dzięki nim ma odpowiedni pazur, energię i nośność i tak wyróżnia się na tle pozostałych dwóch płyt grupy. Jest prostsza, mniej tu kombinowania, jest w niej bardzo dużo tego klasycznego thrash/heavy metalu. Ukłony muszą też w tej kwestii polecieć do Marka Łozy, bo i on odpowiada za część muzyki na albumie. Podsumowując, płyta nie powala w kwestii tekstów - generalnie nie moja bajka i styl (z wyjątkami), natomiast muzycznie totalnie go kupuję i dzięki temu, będę miał ochotę go słuchać. Tutaj "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła" absolutnie wygrywa i jeżeli do kogoś nie przemawiają teksty Marka, ale ma w sobie odpowiedni dystans do tematu, to powinien albumu posłuchać. Dobra porcja klasycznych metalowych dźwięków.

Thanks to this year's vinyl release, which I have just received, I decided to write down my reflections on the new Destroyers album. Last year it didn't work out, somehow I postponed it for an indefinite period of time, until there was an incentive to write something. Destroyers is one of the groups that built the Polish metal scene in the 1980s. Their work is either loved or hated, or you just have a certain fondness for it. Personally, I am not a fan of the lyrical layer that the band represents, at least half of the lyrics do not appeal to me at all, but musically it is a really solid piece of metal music. Without combining and in the style of the early years of our Polish scene. Thanks to this, I return to the works of Destroyers from time to time. That is why I can say that I'm part of this group that has some kind of sentiment towards them. "Dziewięć Kręgów Zła" is Destroyers' third full-length album and is a returning one after many years of absence. The first thing I can say about it is that it is the best album the band has recorded. Yes, it sounds good, there's energy, nice riffs. Marek's vocals are at their prime and his singing style that is so characteristic doesn't leave him. The subject matter of the lyrics and their aesthetics have not changed over the years, so somehow I do not really see the point in discussing this issue. If you know Destroyers' works well in this respect, then you know what to expect. Nevertheless, I really liked "Zemsta Roninów" (maybe simple to the core, but "Tnie katana! Głowy ścina!" is so memorable) and "Nine Circles of Evil". Back to the music. Injecting some fresh blood on the guitars did good to the band. The work of Dominik and Tomek built the quality of this material. In fact, it's mostly for their guitars that I listen to this album and want to come back to it. Thanks to them, it has the right edge, energy and feeling and thus stands out from the other two albums of the group. It is simpler, less combining here, there is a lot of that classic thrash/heavy metal in it. Respect must also go to Marek Łoza in this matter, because he is also responsible for some of the music on the album. To sum up, the album don't win in terms of lyrics - generally not my cup of tea and style (with exceptions), but musically I totally buy it and thanks to that, I want to listen to it. Here, "Nine Circles of Evil" absolutely wins and if someone does not like Marek's lyrics, but has the appropriate distance to the topic, he should listen to the album. A good portion of classic metal sounds.
