Nie muszą na nowo odkrywać koła, nie muszą przynosić eksperymentów czy niesamowicie oryginalnych pomysłów. Wystarczy, że wnoszą nową jakość, potrafią wciągnąć, zawitać w odtwarzaczu przynajmniej te kilka razy. Taka jest właśnie debiutancka EPka Beastlurker. Zespół gra totalnie i w punkt to, co można określić sformułowaniem Black/Death Metal. Zero kombinowania, konkretnie i na temat! Pierwsze minuty i już dostajemy z głośników srogi łomot! Fani takich ekip jak na przykład Stillborn oraz Teitanblood będą w piekło wzięci. Cztery utwory składające się na "Sanguine Elixir of Psychotropic Divination" mają niebywały potencjał w swojej niszy. Widać, że chłopaki mają i talent, i warsztat, co daje im szansę na wybicie się wśród konkurencji - jednym słowem jest w tym materiale "to coś". Gratuluję Gregowi nosa, że przygarnął ich do swojej wytwórni, bo coś może z tego być. Na razie jest dobrze i rodzi to konkretne oczekiwania względem pełnej płyty. Z chęcią będę miał na Bestlurker oko, Wam też radzę.

They don't have to reinvent the wheel, they don't have to bring experiments or unbelievably original ideas. It's enough that they create a new quality, grab your attention, visit the record player at least a few times. Example of such is without a doubt a debut EP by Beastlurker. The band plays totally in a way that can be described as Black/Death Metal. No bullshit, just straight to the point! The first minutes and we already get a severe blow from the speakers! Fans of bands such as Stillborn and Teitanblood will have a hell of a pleasure. The four songs making up "Sanguine Elixir of Psychotropic Divination" have incredible potential in their niche. You can see that the guys have both talent and technical skills, which give them a chance to stand out among the competition - in a word, this material has "that thing". I congratulate Greg on finding and adding them to his label. There may be something out of it. For now, it is good and it raises high expectations when it comes to full-length album. I will gladly keep an eye on Bestlurker, I advise you to do so as well.

Concilium - The Oblivion of Time in the Dim Light (Putrid Cult 2019)

Concilium to tajemniczy Black Metalowy projekt muzyków Summon i Necrobode. Tajemniczy i stosunkowo oryginalny, łączący ze sobą pewien majestat, niesamowitą wręcz przestrzenność dźwięku (chociaż - jak na podziemie przystało - surowego) oraz nieokiełznany chaos. Debiutancka EPka, "The Oblivion of Time in the Dim Light", to z jednej strony niemal lita, klimatyczna ściana dźwięku, w której wokal jest tylko dodatkiem. Istnieje gdzieś w tle i są to bardziej odległe krzyki niż konkretna, pierwszoplanowa część kompozycji. Z drugiej, po uważnym odsłuchu, zaczyna się dostrzegać jej niepozorną wielowarstwowość; jak to mówią - w tym szaleństwie jest metoda. Ta monotonia, bo nie przewija się tu zbyt wiele zmian tempa czy różnorodność riffów, kreuje tu niesamowitą magię, pewną wyjątkowość, tym bardziej, że takich tworów jak Concilium nie ma na scenie zbyt wiele. EPka jest nad wyraz spójna i, mimo czterech zawartych tu utworów, ma się czasem wrażenie słuchania jednej bardzo długiej kompozycji. I to nie przeszkadza. Na pierwsze minuty odsłuchu dzieło niepozorne, acz z każdą kolejną zyskuje. Po czasie ma się ochotę do tych piekielnych pasaży powrócić. "The Oblivion of Time in the Dim Light" to wycieczka do najgłębszych otchłani piekła i ludzkiego umysłu, to ścieżka dźwiękowa do wszystkiego, co najmroczniejsze, wypaczone, niepokojąco niepojęte. Szczerze polecam, kawał dobrego, nieszablonowego Black Metalu!

Mysterious and relatively original, combining a certain majesty, incredible spatiality of the sound (though raw as befits the underground) and unbridled chaos. The debut EP, "The Oblivion of Time in the Dim Light", is an almost solid, atmospheric wall of sound in which the vocal is just an addition. It exists somewhere in the background and these are more distant screams than the specific, foreground part of the composition. On the other hand, after careful listening, one begins to notice its inconspicuous multilayeredness, as they say - to this madness, there is a method. This monotony, because there are not too many tempo changes, or a variety of riffs, creates amazing magic, a certain uniqueness, all the more so because there are not that many acts on the scene such as Concilium. The EP is extremely coherent and, despite the four songs included here, one sometimes has the impression of listening to one very long composition. And it can be treated as an advantage in this case. For the first minutes of listening, the work is inconspicuous, but with each subsequent it grows. After a while you feel like returning to these infernal passages. "The Oblivion of Time in the Dim Light" is a trip to the deepest depths of hell and the human mind, it is a soundtrack to everything that is dark, distorted, disturbingly inconceivable. I highly recommend, a piece of good, unconventional Black Metal!

Cadaveric Possession - Sephirothic Desiccation (Putrid Cult 2019)

Kolejne bardzo dobre wydawnictwo tej jesieni. Za sprawą Morgula i jego Putrid Cult dostajemy pierwszą w dorobku Cadaveric Possesion EPkę. Sześć Black/Death metalowych hymnów dla wielbicieli Bestial Raids, Archgoat, Beherit, Blasphemy, Nekkrofukk i tym podobnych. Jednym słowem - szatan, skóry, ćwieki, maski p-gaz i ogólne bluźnierstwo podane w formie ciężkich niczym walec kompozycji. Ich demo i pełny album były naprawdę solidnymi tytułami w temacie, ale ten materiał to sztos! Cadaveric Possession opanowali tę diabelską formułę do perfekcji i nie mają czego zazdrościć legendom, które tego typu granie niegdyś wykuwały. Prosto, ciężko, bez półśrodków, bez oglądania się za siebie, bez udziwnień - takie jest to granie. Czysta destrukcja i ogień czeluści piekielnych! No i jeszcze na dokładkę okładka autorstwa Lorda K. Charakterystyczna, jak wszystkie jego grafiki, i spójna z zawartością, klimat robi konkretny. Ta surowość i konsekwencja obranej muzycznej ścieżki służą zespołowi i dzięki temu już są w podziemiu znani. Straight, hard, without substitutes, without looking back, without any unnecassary additions - that's how it is. Pure destruction and the fire from the infernal depths! This rawness and consistency of the chosen musical paths serve the band and they are already known in the underground. Dagorath/Occultum/Mordhell/Czort - Under the White Flame split (Under the Sign of Garazel / Only Death is Real 2019)

Chyba - jak do tej pory - najbardziej kompleksowy split, jaki miałem w łapach. Aż cztery grupy i to same dobre ekipy z naszego Black Metalowego podziemia. "Under the White Flame" to sojusz Dagorath, Occultum, Mordhell oraz Czorta. Każda z grup przygotowała na to wydawnictwo premierowe kawałki. No i jest tu czego słuchać, bez dwóch zdań. Obok splitu Beastcraft/Black Altar, to chyba najlepsze tego typu wydawnictwo, jakie słyszałem od dwóch lat. A więc do rzeczy. Dagorath i Occultum prezentują nam bardziej rozbudowane numery, pełne klimatu, odrobiny melodii, ociekające rytualną, mroczną atmosferą. Oba zespoły, co nie nagrają, to jestem pod wrażeniem wyczucia i łączenia tylu fajnych cech i wyciągania z Black Metalu samej jego najlepszej esencji. Brzmienie obu grup jest potężne, momentami wręcz przytłaczające swoją mocą. Kompozycje są zbalansowane, nie brakuje tu zarówno kanonad, jak i tych wolniejszych pasaży. Occultum, mimo że podobne, ma nieco więcej z tej rytualności i klimatu, jest bardziej płynne, więcej tu melodii. Dagorath jest jakby odrobinę bardziej nastawiony na surowszą, mniej subtelną formę. Potem wchodzi bezlitosny Mordhell i rozpętuje istną burzę bluźnierstwa i chaosu. Ich granie skierowane jest w Black/Thrashowym kierunku, jest bardziej bezpośrednie i organiczne, co wyróżnia ich spośród pozostałych grup na splicie. Jest obskurnie, dziko i bez najmniejszych kompromisów. Na koniec materiał od Czorta, który jest tą majestatyczną częścią splitu - poważną, miarową, na swój sposób dostojną dawką mroku. Sporo klimatu robią tu dosyć wyraźnie wykrzyczane polskie teksty, co nie jest znowu tak powszechną w temacie praktyką.

Na chwilę obecną śmiało można ten split potraktować jako wizytówkę polskiego podziemnego Black Metalu - "Nie wiesz, nie znasz? Odpal sobie to, na tym krążku jest niemal wszystko, co najlepsze!". Jeden z tegorocznych "must have", bezapelacyjnie!

I think this is so far the most comprehensive split I've had in my hands. As many as four groups and all top ones from Polish Black Metal underground. "Under the White Flame" is an alliance of Dagorath, Occultum, Mordhell ​​and Czort. Each group has prepared premiere compositions for this release. And there is something to listen to, without a doubt. Alongside the Beastcraft/Black Altar split, it's probably the best release of this kind I've heard in two years. So, to the point. Dagorath and Occultum present us with more elaborate tracks, full of climate, a bit of melody, dripping with a ritual, dark atmosphere. Both bands, no matter what they record, make me feel impressed with the sense and combination of so many cool features and extracting best essence of Black Metal. The sound of both groups is powerful, sometimes overwhelming with its power. The compositions are balanced, there are both cannonades and some slower passages. Occultum, although similar, has a bit more of this ritual climate, it is more fluid, there are more melodies here. Dagorath is a bit more focused on a primitive, less subtle form. Then enters the merciless Mordhell ​​and unleashes a real storm of blasphemy and chaos. Their stuff is turned towards the Black/Thrash direction, it is more straightforward and organic, which distinguishes them from other groups on the split. It is obscure, wild and without the slightest compromise. Finally, the material from Czort, which is the majestic part of the split - a serious, steady, dignified dose of darkness in its own way. Quite a lot of climate here is thanks to clearly shouted Polish lyrics, which is not such a common practice in this subject.

At the moment, this split can easily be treated as a showcase of Polish underground Black Metal - "You are not familiar, you don't know it? Check this out, this album has almost all the best!". One of this year's "must-haves", definitely!

Patricide - Capitis Capri Sancti (Mara Production 2019)

Kawał historii w nowym wydaniu. Patricide zaistnieli niegdyś na scenie, ale dosłownie na moment (1993/94 rok). Nagrali demo, które niestety nie doczekało się publikacji i słuch po nich zaginął. Ten rok przynosi reaktywację w oryginalnym duecie (Mantas i Baron) oraz pełną płytę. Składa się na nią pięć starych, nagranych na nowo kompozycji, trzy premierowe utwory oraz cover Sacrilegium.
Death Metal w wykonaniu Patricide to wycieczka do początku lat 90., tylko w nieco nowszym brzmieniu. Słuchając ich materiału, przypominają się stare dokonania Vader, Armageddon, Betrayer, a wraz z tym unikatowość naszej sceny na tle pozostałych. Do ich gry wkrada się też odrobina melodii rodem ze Szwecji, okraszonej mocarnym, gęstym brzemieniem. Wokal kojarzy się natomiast z nieco brutalniejszymi grupami, takimi jak Deicide czy Cannibal Corpse. I co fajne, starsze utwory w ogóle od nowych nie odstają, wydają się być stworzone w tym samym czasie, płyta jest bardzo spójna pod tym względem. Bardzo dobrze się tego słucha i są to utwory, do których ma się ochotę wielokrotnie powracać. Jest w tym energia, pasja i radość z grania, a to od razu podnosi jakość muzyki. Dobrze, że panowie zdecydowali się wskrzesić Patricide i nagrać debiutancki album. Efekt jest bardzo dobry i rodzi pytanie, czy jest szansa na kolejne płyty, może koncerty. Mam nadzieję, że na "Capitis Capri Sancti" zespół nie poprzestanie i jeszcze o nich usłyszymy.

A piece of history in a new incarnation. Patricide appeared on the scene once, but literally for a moment (1993/94). They recorded a demo, which unfortunately was not published and they vanished for a very long time. This year brings reactivation in the original line-up (Mantas and Baron) and the full-length album. It consists of five old, newly recorded compositions, three premiere songs and a cover of Sacrilegium.
Death Metal performed by Patricide is a trip to the early '90s, only in a slightly newer sound. Listening to their material reminds us of the old achievements of Vader, Armageddon, Betrayer, and with that the uniqueness of our scene in comparison to the others. A bit of Swedish melody creeps into the game together with a strong, dense production. Vocals are associated with slightly more brutal groups, such as Deicide and Cannibal Corpse. And what is cool, older songs do not stand out from the new ones at all, they seem to be created during the same period of time, the album is very consistent in this case. It's very enjoyable listening to it and these are songs you want to return to over and over again. There is energy, passion and joy of playing in it, which immediately increases the quality of music. It's good that these gentlemen decided to resurrect Patricide and record their debut album. The effect is very good and raises the question of whether there is a chance for next albums, maybe concerts. I hope that the band will not stop at "Capitis Capri Sancti" and we will hear about them again.

Hell's Coronation - Ritual Chalice of Hateful Blood (Godz ov War 2019)

Doczekaliśmy się wreszcie pełniaka od Hell's Coronation! 39 minut rytualnego, gęstego, Black Metalowego grania utrzymanego w wolnych i średnich tempach. Kłaniają się tu echa i inspiracje takimi hordami jak Xantotol, Taranis z czasów "Obscurity", stary Samael, Hellhammer / Celtic Frost czy nawet tego, co Zepar tworzył w ramach Mastiphal, plus jeszcze więcej jadu, diabła i woni siarki. "Ritual Chalice of Hateful Blood" jest też swoistą sumą poprzednich materiałów, jakie znamy z ich EPek i splitu. Ten sam styl i sznyt, atmosfera, ale podane w lepszym, mam wrażenie, tłustszym brzmieniu. Hell's Coronation wraz z "Unholy Blades of the Devil", czyli poprzednim ich materiałem, stał się dla mnie synonimem kunsztu w tym podziemnym, surowym i totalnie bezkompromisowym podejściu do Black Metalu. Pełny album tylko mnie w tym utwierdził. Zepar i Coffincrusher to właściwi ludzie na właściwym miejscu, z pasją i wyczuciem tej sztuki. Da się wyczuć, że ta muzyka to coś więcej niż same dźwięki, ma to głębię i klimat, jakiś mroczny, magiczny pierwiastek. I to nadaje jej wyjątkowości, a przede wszystkim autentyczności. "Ritual Chalice of Hateful Blood" is also a kind of sum of previous materials we know from their EPs and split. The same style, atmosphere, but served in a better, I feel, fatter sound. Hell's Coronation, together with "Unholy Blades of the Devil", which is their previous material, has become for me a synonym of craftsmanship in this underground, raw and totally uncompromising approach to Black Metal. The full album only ensured me. Zepar and Coffincrusher are the right people in the right place, with passion and a sense of this art. One can feel that this music is more than just sounds, it has depth and atmosphere, some dark, magical element. And this gives it uniqueness and, above all, authenticity. Maybe Hell's Coronation does not discover the wheel, it does not redefine the theme, but it is not the specific sound, style and form that may require it. Here you need consistency and the band has it. On "Ritual Chalice of Hateful Blood" we get a proven formula, but it still has something that makes the material interesting, and its predictability does not appear as a disadvantage, but a strong point. I look forward to the next recordings of this group and I know that I will not be disappointed! The latest album proves it and is certainly one of the brightest (or perhaps the darkest?) marks on the map of this year's news from Polish BM scene. I recommend it and sign that with both hands! Best Godz of War release of this fall, both in form and content!

1349 - The Infernal Pathway (Season of Mist 2019)

Dla mnie numer jeden, jeżeli chodzi o tegoroczne wydawnictwa Black Metalowe! 1349 może nie są jakoś mocno rozchwytywani, powszechnie znani, ale są zespołem o silnej i niegasnącej pozycji, nie tylko na scenie norweskiej/europejskiej, ale i ogólnoświatowej. Ta ekipa jest, moim zdaniem, symbolem trwałości i niezłomności w tej muzyce. Od lat idą swoją własną ścieżką, nie oglądając się na nikogo, na żadne trendy. Zespołem, który wciąż wierny jest swoim korzeniom i temu, co niegdyś sobie postanowili - grać Black Metal bez upiększeń, wierny tej bezkompromisowej, bezpośredniej formie, z nawiązaniem do początków stylu i tego jakim oni chcą aby był.

"The Infernal Pathway" jest jakby zwieńczeniem ich dotychczasowych dzieł, materiałem łączącym dawniejsze osiągnięcia grupy z tym nowszymi. Coś jakby wypadkowa "Beyond the Apocalypse", "Demonoir" (ponowne wykorzystanie i nawiązanie do konceptu Tuneli Seta) oraz "Massive Cauldron of Chaos". Jest ta zauważalna miejscami Thrashowa domieszka (w sumie była ona obecna już od samych początków 1349, co wciąż odróżnia ich od większości zespołów z tego gatunku), jest sporo klimatu, budowania atmosfery, elementy melodii, nośne, tnące riffy i ogień, który zawsze ich płytom towarzyszy. Nie brakuje tu też tego potrzebnego, mocarnego uderzenia, chaosu, i bynajmniej nie chodzi mi tu o nieład. Kolejną cechą "The Infernal Pathway" jest jego niezwykła dojrzałość, spójność. Albumowi nie brakuje absolutnie niczego. Jest namacalnym, słyszalnym dowodem na to, że Black Metal w swojej surowości, ekstremalnej formie nie musi brzmieć źle, brudno. Tutaj, właśnie dzięki bardzo dopracowanemu brzmieniu, misternej produkcji, powstała płyta esencjonalna, przepełniona zarówno formą, jak i treścią. Takie albumy predysponują w swoim czasie do miana klasyków i dzieł, śmiem twierdzić, mogących inspirować innych. Co ważne, i co zawsze sobie cenię, to natychmiastowa chęć powrotu do danego materiału. "The Infernal Pathway" może się poszczycić tym, że emanuje syndromem "play again". Płyta wciąga, i fakt tego, że nie ma tu dłużyzn - jest dynamicznie przez całe ponad 40 minut jej trwania - z marszu kusi do odpalenia jej ponownie. Posłuchajcie otwierającego "Abyssos Antithesis", następującego po nim "Through Eyes of Stone", singlowego "Dodskamp" czy gnającego na złamanie karku "Striding the Chasm", a wszystko stanie się oczywiste i płytka tak samo Wami zawładnie, jak mną.
W kwestii podsumowania powiem jedno: 7., album w dorobku 1349 to dzieło, do którego nie ma startu wiele powstałych w tym roku materiałów, i to nawet zespołów o jeszcze większej od nich renomie. Absolutne opus magnum w ich dorobku i najprawdopodobniej moja płyta roku!

For me, number one when it comes to this year's Black Metal releases! 1349 may not be well-sought after, widely known, but they are a band with a strong and indelible position, not only on the Norwegian/European scene, but also on the global one. This band is, in my opinion, a symbol of durability and steadfastness in this music. For years, they have been following their own path, not looking at anyone, any trends. A band that is still true to their roots and what they once decided - to play Black Metal without embellishments, faithful to this uncompromising, direct form, referring to the beginnings of style and the way they want it to be.
"The Infernal Pathway" is like the culmination of their previous works, a material combining the group's past achievements with the newer ones. Something like the mixture of "Beyond the Apocalypse", "Demonoir" (reusing and referring to the concept of Tunnels of Set) and "Massive Cauldron of Chaos". There is this noticeable admixture of Thrash (well, it was present from the very beginning of 1349, which still distinguishes them from most bands of this genre), there is a lot of climate, building the atmosphere, melody elements, carrying, cutting riffs and fire, which always present in their works. There is no lack of this needed, powerful blow, chaos, and I do not mean disorder here. Another feature of "The Infernal Pathway" is its remarkable maturity and coherence. The album has absolutely nothing missing. It is tangible, audible proof that Black Metal in its rawness, extreme form does not have to sound bad, dirty. Here, thanks to a very refined sound, intricate production, an essential album was created, filled with both form and content. Such albums predispose in their time to the name of classics and works, I dare say, that could inspire others. What is important and what I always value, is an immediate desire to return to a given material. "The Infernal Pathway" can be proud to possess the "play again" syndrome. The record draws, and the fact that there are no longueurs here - it is dynamic throughout the entire 40 minutes of its duration - tempts you to play it again. Listen to the opening "Abyssos Antithesis", its follower "Through Eyes of Stone", the single one "Dodskamp" or "Striding the Chasm" rushing hell-bent, and everything will become obvious and you will love this album as much as I do.
Regarding the summary, I will say one thing: the 7th album of 1349 is a work to which many of the materials created this year, and even bands with an even greater reputation than them, have no start. An absolute magnum opus in their achievements and, most likely, my album of the year!

Ahret Dev - Hellish (Vox Mortiis 1997 / Godz Ov War 2019)

Jedna z legend polskiego Death Metalu. Radomski Ahret Dev to jeden z zespołów, który zasługiwał na znacznie więcej, a na pewno nie na to, aby tak szybko zniknąć ze sceny. Zarówno ich dema (nawet to pod szyldem Wenetis), jak i jedyny, pełny album "Hellish", to światowy poziom wykonawczy. Spotkała się tu brutalność Deicide, energia i solówki Vader oraz odrobina technicznego zacięcia Violent Dirge. Może kulało to trochę pod względem brzmienia, produkcji, ale nie zawsze wszystko dało się dociągnąć do perfekcji, trzeba sobie z tego zdawać sprawę. Warunki i możliwości były, jakie były. Mimo to zespół grał na wyżej wspomnianym albumie jak natchniony. Co z tego, że to tylko niespełna 30 minut materiału, gdy bije na głowę sporo dłuższych i okazalszych dzieł. "Hellish" to taki swoisty nieoszlifowany diament. Ich granie to nie był już nawet wynik autentycznej pasji w temacie, ale faktycznych umiejętności, kreatywności i świadomości granej muzyki. Gdyby czasy były wtedy bardziej sprzyjające, a chłopakom starczyło determinacji, to myślę, że mieliby szansę zajść tak daleko, jak na przykład Decapitated. To im się należało. Zespół zostawił po sobie 2 dema, pełen album, trochę rehów i to, co stworzyli jeszcze jako Wenetis. To wszystko znajdziecie na tegorocznym wznowieniu z ramienia Godz Ov War. Mamy tu nie tylko samą płytę, ale właśnie wszystkie te pozostałe materiały dodane na oddzielnym dysku. Gregowi należy się szacun za ponowne tego wydanie i formę, jaką tu przyjął. O takich zespołach i płytach, jak dzieło Ahret Dev, trzeba pamiętać, trzeba o nich przypominać, bo na to zasługują. Polecać nie będę, bo dla każdego fana naszej sceny i Death Metalu brak tej pozycji na półce to zbrodnia niewybaczalna! Amen!

One of the legends of Polish Death Metal. Ahret Dev from Radom (Poland) is one of the bands that deserved much more, and certainly not to disappear from the scene so quickly. Both their demos (even the one under the name Wenetis) and the only full album "Hellish" are a world-class performance level. Deicide's brutality, Vader's energy and guitar solos met here, as well as a bit of technical stuff of Violent Dirge. Maybe it was a bit lame in terms of sound and production, but not everything could be perfect, you have to be aware of it. Conditions and possibilities were what they were. Despite this, the band played on the above mentioned album as inspired. The fact that it is only less than 30 minutes of material does not change the conclusion that it was better than many longer and more complex works in the field. "Hellish" is a kind of rough diamond. Band's playing was not even the result of a real passion in the subject, but the actual skills, creativity and awareness of the music they performed. If the times were more favorable then, and the boys had enough determination, I think they would have a chance to get as far as, for example, Decapitated. It was their due. The band left 2 demos, a full-length album, some rehearsals and what they created as Wenetis. You'll find it all on this year's reissue by Godz Ov War. We have here not only the album itself, but all those other materials added on a separate disc. Greg deserves respect for this release and the way he has done it. You have to remember about bands and records like the work of Ahret Dev, they deserve it. I will not recommend it, because for every fan of Polish scene and Death Metal, the lack of this album on the shelf is an unforgivable crime! Amen!
