Haunted Cenotaph - Haunted Cenotaph (Fallen Temple 2019)

Po pierwszej Epce/demie chłopaki bardzo zaciekawili mnie swoim graniem, czekałem, co zaprezentują wraz z kolejnym materiałem. I niestety, długograja póki co nie dostaliśmy, a kolejną Epkę. W sumie nic w tym złego, ale znowu trochę krótko. Zmartwiła mnie tylko jedna rzecz. Mianowicie to, że "Haunted Cenotaph" nie przebił swojego poprzednika, a zaledwie się z nim zrównał i to na ostatkach sił. Obiektywnie to kawał świetnego, dobrze brzmiącego Doom/Death Metalu, nigdy nie przestanę tego głośno mówić i powtarzać, ale subiektywnie ten materiał niespecjalnie mi się spodobał, muszę być szczery. Za dużo wolnych partii, za dużo tego wszechobecnego ciężaru i gęstości. Jest oldschool pełną gębą, słychać takie ekipy jak Hellhammer, Samael (wczesny oczywiście), Asphyx, które wciąż są w ich inspiracjach, ale w tych swoich walcowatych odsłonach. Przyspieszeń jest tu jak dla mnie za mało, co niestety wpłynęło na balans płyty. Przez to odbiór w pewnych momentach zaczyna być nieco męczący, jednostajny i dopasuje to tylko fanom przede wszystkim tej Doom Metalowej części twórczości Haunted Cenotaph. Zaprowadzili nas w otchłań śmierci i zagłady, mroku i posępności i zmusili do przeżywania tych cech swej sztuki w wolniejszy, przytłaczający sposób i jestem pewien, że wielu z was ten kierunek kupi. Klimat to swój ma, urok pewnie też. Mnie, przyznaję, niestety nie zachwyciło na tyle, na ile bym chciał. Mimo tego nie zamierzam porzucić oczekiwania na pełny album. Nadal jestem go ciekaw i czekam z niecierpliwością na więcej Death niż Doom, oby jak najprędzej. Tymczasem komu smoła niestraszna i lubi się w niej zatopić, niech śmiga do Fallen Temple po swoją kopię! I jeszcze jedno, szacun za zajebistą okładkę!

After the first EP/demo, the band got me very interested in their playing, I waited for what they would present along with the next material. And unfortunately, we didn't get the full-length, but another EP. All in all nothing bad, but again a little short. Only one thing worried me, namely that the "Haunted Cenotaph" did not break its predecessor, but just caught up with it and at the last strength. Objectively, it's a piece of great, good-sounding Doom / Death Metal, I will never stop saying and repeating it loudly, but subjectively I do not like this material, I have to be honest. Too many slow parts, too much of this ubiquitous weight and density. It is a totally oldschool art, you can hear such influences like Hellhammer, Samael (early of course), Asphyx, which are still there from the very beginning, but in their heaviest incarnation. There is not enough of these faster parts, which unfortunately affected the balance of the record. Due to this, the reception at some moments begins to be a bit tiring, repetitive and it will suit only fans of all this Doom Metal part of the work of Haunted Cenotaph. They led us into the abyss of death and destruction, darkness and gloom, and forced us to experience these features of their art in a slow, overwhelming way and I am sure that many of you will catch up with this direction. It has its own atmosphere, charm probably too. I admit it, unfortunately it didn't impress as much as I would like. Despite this, I'm not going to give up waiting for the full album. I am still curious and waiting impatiently for more Death than Doom, may it be soon. Meanwhile, who is not afraid of tar and likes to sink in it, just check out Fallen Temple for your copy! Carnifexian - Age of Spiked Mace (Dark Age Productions 2017)

Dzisiejszy wpis to coś ze świata tzw. Dungeon Synth, muzyki poniekąd mocno z Metalem związanej, zwłaszcza z Black Metalem. Konkretnie jego melodyjną, średniowieczną, czy też tolkienowską odmianą. Carnifexian to młody, jednoosobowy projekt z Rosji. Dungeon Synth mocno inspirowany takimi projektami jak Elffor, Mortiis, Barak Tor, Erang czy nawet Summoning w jego instrumentalnej odsłonie. To właśnie długa, trzynasto utworowa wycieczka w stronę tych brzmień i klimatu. I, co ważne, nie można Carnifexian posądzić o jakąś wyraźną wtórność w temacie. Sporo projektów w ramach Dungeon Synth czy Ambientu jest niestety powtarzalna do bólu (taki np. Old Tower to darcie skóry z Mortiisa), nudna, czy po prostu nijaka. Tutaj tego nie ma. Płyta się nie nudzi, fajnie przez cały czas trwania snuje swoją historię osadzoną w krainie zamków, smoków, lochów i magii. Na dobrą sprawę zlatuje nie wiadomo kiedy i ma się ochotę odpalić ją ponownie, a w końcu to ponad dziesięć kompozycji. No i klimat, tutaj jest jego wyczucie, twórca wie, z czym ma do czynienia, w jakim brzmieniu się obraca i co ta muzyka ma ze sobą nieść, jakie wrażenie ma w słuchaczu generować. Jest tu zatrzęsienie fajnych melodii, różnych smaczków (elementów podobnych do tych jakimi urozmaicał Mortiis takie płyty jak "Crypt of the Wizard" oraz "The Stargate") i akurat ten projekt nie żeruje na eksploatowaniu rozwiązania jakim jest nadmierna monotonia czy repetycja, zachowany jest balans i lekkie zróżnicowanie nastrojów. Od typowo nostalgicznych, po podniosłe i epickie. Miejscami można wyłapać jakieś odniesienia do twórczości Basila Poledurisa i jego ścieżki dźwiękowej do "Conana Barbarzyńcy".
Jednym słowem jest to kawał solidnego Dungeon Synthu, z pomysłami, odrobiną świeżego spojrzenia na tradycyjną strukturę, a przede wszystkim takiego, który po krótszym czasie nie odejdzie w zapomnienie wśród tych, którzy będą mieli okazję się z nim zapoznać. Ja ze swojej strony jak najbardziej polecam wszystkim fanom tego typu brzmień.

Today's review is something from the world of so-called Dungeon Synth, music somewhat strongly associated with Metal, especially Black Metal. Specifically, its melodic, medieval or Tolkien-like type. Carnifexian is a young, one-man project from Russia. Dungeon Synth strongly inspired by such projects as Elffor, Mortiis, Barak Tor, Erang or even Summoning in its instrumental version. This is a long, thirteen-track trip towards these sounds and atmosphere. And, importantly, Carnifexian can not be accused of any clear secondaryness in its art. A lot of projects within Dungeon Synth or Ambient is unfortunately painfully repetitive (such as Old Tower that is simply tearing the skin from Mortiis), boring or simply bland. Here there is no such situation. The album is not boring, it's great all the time telling its story set in the land of castles, dragons, dungeons and magic. In fact, it flows and you want to play it again, and, you know, it is more than ten compositions. And the atmosphere, here you have the feeling of it, the artist knows what he is dealing with, in what sound he revolves and what this music is supposed to carry with itself, what impression it should generate on the listener. There is a lot of cool melodies, various additions (elements similar to those of Mortiis, used on "Crypt of the Wizard" and "The Stargate") and this project does not prey on exploiting a solution which is excessive monotony or repetition, it  preserves balance and slight diversity of moods. From typically nostalgic to sublime and epic. In some places you can catch some references to the work of Basil Poleduris and his soundtrack to "Conan The Barbarian".
In a word, it is a piece of solid Dungeon Synth, with ideas, a bit of a fresh attitude towards the traditional structure, and above all, one that after a short time will not go into oblivion among those who will have the opportunity to listen to it. I totally recommend this Carnifexian to all the fans of this kind of art!

Nyctophilia - Bezdeń (Wolfspell Records 2019)

Z kolejną płytą uderza w tym miesiącu Nyctophilia. A nie minął nawet rok od wydania poprzednika w postaci "Ad Mortem et Tenebrae". Czy oznacza to, że materiał może być potencjalnie słaby? W żadnym wypadku! "Bezdeń" to wciąż kawał świetnego Black Metalu i bynajmniej nie kopiuje tego, co pojawiło się na poprzednim krążku. Ten 32-minutowy opus zdaje się być nieco bardziej surowy, organiczny, wydaje mi się; że jest tu więcej klimatu i aury dem, wczesnych płyt, zarówno polskiej, jak i skandynawskiej sceny Black Metalowej lat 90-tych. Zahacza to nawet, w okazyjnych ambientowych pasażach, o Burzum (końcówka "Ku Bezkresowi Rzeczy") czy muzykę, jaką na początku tworzył Piotr Weltrowski pod szyldem December's Fire. W utworze instrumentalnym "Pustka" można się natomiast doszukać w warstwie muzycznej jakby pogańskiego pierwiastka, podobnego do tego, który miał album "Horizons" Temnozor. To słychać już na dzień dobry. Poprzednia płyta oscylowała wokół dźwiękowego chłodu, posępnego patosu, "Bezdeń" zabiera nas w nieco inne rejony, bardziej mroczne, nawiązujące do trzaskających iskier dawnego ognia, jaki niegdyś tlił się na scenie. Muszę z marszu powiedzieć, że byłem tu bardzo pozytywnie zaskoczony. Spodziewałem się bowiem, w pewnym sensie, bliźniaka "Ad Mortem et Tenebrae", ale tak nie jest. Ta płyta to taki częściowy powrót do korzeni, przynajmniej ja ją tak odbieram. Taka nostalgia w stosunku do starego grania. Słychać tu sporo Darkthrone z czasów "Under a Funeral Moon", trochę starego Behemoth (demo "From the Pagan Vastlands"), Sacrilegium z okresu płyty "Wicher", czy Mayhem z czasów, kiedy był z nimi Dead i powstawały riffy do "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". Grief zrobił niezłą wycieczkę do przeszłości, wciąż pozostając jedną nogą w elementach takich grup jak Striborg czy Xasthur.
Nyctophilia to zespół, który tak naprawdę głęboko w poważaniu ma trendy i tendencje w obecnym Black Metalu. Idzie własną ścieżką i tworzy sztukę mającą już na starcie te ponad 20 lat stażu, jakby wyjętą z tamtych czasów. I to mnie totalnie urzeka. Dlatego właśnie poczynania Nyctophilia będę śledził cały czas, gdyż każda płyta niesie kapitalne doświadczenia i emocje związane ze starym, dobrym Black Metalem jego najlepszych dni. Polecam!

This month Nyctophilia hits with its new record. And not even a year has passed since the release of the predecessor in the form of "Ad Mortem et Tenebrae". Does this mean that the material may be potentially weak? No way! "Bezdeń" is still a great piece of Black Metal and does not copy what appeared on the previous album. This 32-minute opus seems to be a bit more raw, organic, I think there is more climate and aura of demos, early albums, from both Polish and Scandinavian Black Metal scene of the 90s. It even relates, in its ambient arcades, to Burzum (the ending of "Ku Bezkresowi Rzeczy") or music that Piotr Weltrowski created at the beginning under the banner of December's Fire. In the instrumental track called "Pustka", you can find a pagan-like element, similar to that from the album "Horizons" by Temnozor. It can be heard already from the very beginning. The previous album oscillated around the frosty sound, gloomy pathos, "Bezdeń" takes us to slightly different areas, more dark, referring to the crackling sparks of the old fire that once smoldered on the scene. I have to say straight away that I was very positively surprised here. I expected, in a sense, the twin of "Ad Mortem et Tenebrae", but this did not happen. This album is a partial return to the roots, at least I see it that way. Pure nostalgia towards the old stuff. You can hear a lot of Darkthrone from the times of "Under a Funeral Moon", a bit old Behemoth (demo "From the Pagan Vastlands"), Sacrilegium from the album "Wicher" or Mayhem from the time when Dead was with them and riffs for "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" were created. Grief made a nice trip to the past, still remaining one foot in elements of such groups as Striborg or Xasthur.
Nyctophilia is a band that do not care about the trends and tendencies in the current Black Metal. It walks its own path and creates art that already has over 20 years of experience at the start, as if taken out of those times. And it totally captivates me. That is why I will follow Nyctophilia's actions, because each album carries a fantastic experience and emotions related to the good, old Black Metal from its best days. Totally recommend!
